- This songs belong to the album "Tommy" of 1969 & "Tommy: The Movie Soundtrack" of 2000.
I took this videos from the "Tommy: The Movie" DVD.
I'm not the owner of this song, all rights belong to The Who.
Ollie was having such a blast in this movie. I saw this movie WAY too young, and I remember being entranced AND afraid, as this was my introduction to the actor.
You wanna try having Oliver as your first intro. Very confused feelings.
@@kayleighbrown459 Weird isn't it? You figure, as a child, my first musical would BE "Oliver!".
Instead, it was this. Because they would let you rent ANYTHING at the library, nobody warned me lol.
@@mrmusickhimself In fairness my parents were massive horror fans so my first non cartoon movie was probably 50s Dracula.
I'd seen Reed as Bill Sikes in Oliver a few years earlier, so I was already afraid of him.

We had very different reactions.
I think this character was probably what surprised me the most out of the whole film. When I first watched this movie, I would have bet money that this guy was gonna turn out to be the sleezey stepfather figure who only pretended to be nice so he could sleep with the mum.
But no. He's like, totally genuine here. I mean, he's a bit of a lad, but there's nothing in the movie that suggest he was planning to do anything other than be a decent husband and father.....at least until the film went mad.
Yeah. Captain Walker came home at just the wrong time (for both Tommy and himself)
The whole film is about pedophilia.
@@frankgrimes7388 I guess because having his father ginned down in front of him was more of a traumatic reason?
Tommy's dad coming back in '51 was fucking weird. That's at least 6-years after the War ended. Just how lost did he and his unit get?
@@NebMunb Very lost.
Oliver Reed was simply flawless in this film.
Right
He couldn't even sing hahaha 😂 😂
@@nolanr1400 And still killed it
@@nolanr1400You don't need to know how to sing, you just have to be in character when you deliver the sung lines. Relatively in key is just fine.
@@nolanr1400he didn't want to do the film initially because he knew he'd struggle with the singing but Ken Russell convinced him (allegedly he beat Reed in a fencing duel which they fought over it). The main reason (again, allegedly) he was hired is that Keith wanted a drinking buddy on set who could keep up with him to stave off boredom and Reed was a notorious drunk
It's so astounding that Oliver Reed sounds so much like Ian Dury.
Love it.
This sequence jumps around Portsmouth quite a bit (as Tommy was mostly filmed there), for anyone curious of locations;
- Starts in Buckland where the old Victorian houses (ones with no central heating or plumbing) are being pulled down for modern social housing estates etc.
- Then to Southsea Seafront, Eastney end
- Hilsea Lido an Art Deco Grade Listed building, still in use, albeit a bit smaller!
- The ballroom sequence was filmed in South Parade Pier, and during this filming the fire which destroyed the theatre/ballroom happened which is seen later in the film. The pier was rebuild but as grand as the previous version.
(Then in reverse obviously)
“If you could feel this silken thigh you’d know…” is probably the sexiest line I’ve ever heard. I adore Ollie and that line sends me over the edge.
Está película oficialmente es mi favorita en el género musical.
Oliver Reed sadly missed a great actor and a great character
I think this is the most underrated song in the film version and I'm wondering if the Who ever played it live or whether it was ever covered by another band. It's a shame it wasn't used in the Broadway musical but switching back to the father killing the lover made that impossible. Do we think Frank would have turned out to be an OK mate for Nora and a decent father for Tommy had the father not come back? Or was he just a bad dude through and through?
Just brilliant.
Best song in the film.
you might be right about that. it's the only one where three characters are singing different lines i think at the same time. It's a masterpiece. Has the Who ever performed this live? And why did they drop this and the stepfather killing the father storyline from the Broadway musical version?
Many directors of later movies stole a lot of stylistic elements from this scene, especially De Palma
Keith is going a little wild on the high hat
Bass? Snare? Never heard of her.
grandioso
This film and original idea of film and musical are totally different
I’ve just turned 24 and I have to thank my dad for bringing me up on this classic. Bloody love Tommy SO much! Part of my childhood
Is that Hilsea Lido?
Indeed it is.
@@JavertRA I am looking at pictures of Hilsea Lido and I don't see the part of the pool where Tommy is sitting? Was that just built as a set?
The lyrics say chalet number 11 yet they go to number 9...
Oliver reed foi um dos atores mais belos e subestimados do cinema! Comentario feito por uma fan de cinema que morre de inveja da ann margret
Ahhhh the camel-toe of Ann Margaret
