    While I've never made a pirate's chest, I have made chests in the past - if you want a more authentic look, instead of wire nails to hold the sides together, you could use small hardwood dowels instead. Predrill your holes, fill the hole with glue and gently hammer in your dowel. It'll stay forever and be a solid connection between the sides. I love the channel and keep leveling up!

    pro tip for wood that will eventually be stained. Don't wipe away the glue squeeze out. let it dry and then chisel it away. wiping the glue away can cause residue to fill the pores of the wood, preventing the stain from penetrating.

  • @philkugler2429
    @philkugler2429 Год назад +15

    Pro-tip from a furniture maker: to make your butt joints even stronger put extra glue on the end grain and let it soak in. I usually tap on the glue to try and force it in faster (I'm impatient), then after about 8-10 min reapply glue and do your butt joint.
    The reason this works is because the end grain won't pull the glue out of the joint as it cures, as it is already fully saturated.
    This probably won't make any noticeable difference in smaller projects, but it can make a difference on a larger piece.

    Watch out for screws on chests. Larpers will unscrew the hinges. I learned this lesson at the Grand Battle this year because Magpies (a guild) stole my chest, and opened it without the key. Those cut tacks could replace the screws, but you'd have to turn the cut tacks into rivets by peening them. Something to think about for the next chest. ;)
