Our new friends over at Larp Shire had a special request for us... an EPIC Wooden Pirate Chest that they could use to tantalize LARP players with the promise of treasure! I like to think we checked the 'Epic' box rather thoroughly. AND we did it all without any power tools!

If not...well, start preparing to submit to my greatness.
Congratulations on getting a sponsor. I’m excited for you and the channel. Can’t wait for more content. Now if we could just get Tandy leather on board!
While I've never made a pirate's chest, I have made chests in the past - if you want a more authentic look, instead of wire nails to hold the sides together, you could use small hardwood dowels instead. Predrill your holes, fill the hole with glue and gently hammer in your dowel. It'll stay forever and be a solid connection between the sides. I love the channel and keep leveling up!
Nice!
For small dowels, I use take-out chopsticks because I'm cheap.
pro tip for wood that will eventually be stained. Don't wipe away the glue squeeze out. let it dry and then chisel it away. wiping the glue away can cause residue to fill the pores of the wood, preventing the stain from penetrating.
Pro-tip from a furniture maker: to make your butt joints even stronger put extra glue on the end grain and let it soak in. I usually tap on the glue to try and force it in faster (I'm impatient), then after about 8-10 min reapply glue and do your butt joint.
The reason this works is because the end grain won't pull the glue out of the joint as it cures, as it is already fully saturated.
This probably won't make any noticeable difference in smaller projects, but it can make a difference on a larger piece.
Now that you are a super villain, are you taking applications for minions? World conquest sounds fun
He's been taking applications for a while now! See the list of Skill Monkeys at the end of his videos? 😁
Okay, so the build was absolutely awesome, but can we all take a minute to appreciate just how great that sponsor spot was? While all of the build videos are informative and entertaining, I think this was the first sponsor endorsement spot that also had me truly entertained!
Watch out for screws on chests. Larpers will unscrew the hinges. I learned this lesson at the Grand Battle this year because Magpies (a guild) stole my chest, and opened it without the key. Those cut tacks could replace the screws, but you'd have to turn the cut tacks into rivets by peening them. Something to think about for the next chest. ;)
Maybe add a thin layer of JB weld over the screws to make the inaccessible.
This is truly epic. Only viable upgrade would have been to embed a shark tooth from the sword you made into the wood. Thanks for sharing!
Interesting side note: burning wood to char it lightly on the outside, protecting it as well as making it really awesome looking, has been used in traditional asian architecture for centuries. Mainly in Japan and China if I remember correctly.
Glad to see a project like this can be done without big tools. I live in an apartment and barely have room to store my drill.
the netting would make a good way to keep the lid from flopping back completely
Oooooh good point. Come to think on it I MEANT to add leather straps inside for exactly that. Totally spaced it
@@SkillTree If I had a dollar for every time I did that, I would have many dollars!
I'll be finishing up a Viking shield for a friend today. I not only chared it, but did some Fractal Burning on the face. I'll try to put up pics on discord!!!
Please do! Such a cool technique
@@SkillTree it's up on discord under, project-submission and project-share. Hope y'all like it. Remember, it's a prototype.
Ok. Fully done and up on Discord with a description.
We're trying to make a rogues guild. You should come up with some ideas for traps on chests!
YES! Especially if we can make it in a way you COULD disarm is you notice it and are skilled enough. Pass a perception check and a dexterity or thieve's tool check. Very cool
@@SkillTree Exactly! That would be awesome!
This video is excellent. It provided ideas on how to solve two big problems I encounter when making chests: 1. how to disguise the hasp and 2. How to disguise the lock.
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching
You could have also leveled up your metalworking skill also. Just by adding steel straps to hold it together. Maybe you could that with your own chest
That looks so dope! Next time you need to make steel hardware look brassy, you could try hot brassing it 😁 It actually coats the steel with brass and is a lot more durable than painting it.
I SHOULD have! Great call out!
@@SkillTree Sorry I keep doing this 🙈😂
I’ve always liked mixing sawdust with the glue and put it on in a paste form, it’s really cool if you add other wood types, it creates accent lines in cracks
Don't know why, but it looks like my last comment got poofed. It was a fairly long one. Major points were
1) *LOVE* your content!
2) Leveling up my own skills (woodworking, leather craft, etc.) You're a Major inspiration!
3) Perhaps look into working with HDPE. Plastic is everywhere, softens and molds easy, shapes well with woodworking tools!
This is exactly what I need for my own dnd idea for a chest backpack. This will help so much!
holy snap whats up Notie Squaaaaaad???
For me your attention to the small details is what makes these videos so enjoyable to watch. I’m a bladesmith that is just starting out and I am getting to be more and more like that. Each piece I make is better than the last because of it. Each thing you make is better than the last for the same reason
Holy crap a sponsored video!
Nice job cutting across the line to create a kerf line to follow, really let’s the saw do the work without having to worry too much about blade wander.
Dude, be careful. Fingers usually heal but they don't grow back after amputation.
Eight-fingered Cl3ver and the Plan of Doom?
Lol. My dumb ass hurt it MONTHS ago when making that fire striker. I am only now actively trying to help it heal.
Instead of poly, I'd recommend something like Howard's Feed'n'Wax. It'll nourish and protect the wood without causing discolouring like poly can.
This is such a cool pirate chest!!! As someone who has been low key high key into making chests recently, I love how you used the upholstery tacks for the embellishment about the edges, because that's what I use too! Haha. I love it. But yes, nicely crafted, as always. Thanks for the top tier edutainment! ;P
I find that cedar dog ear fence slats work really good for these types of projects too.
Looks great. Only thing I would've done differently would be try to hide the exposed nail heads. Maybe place those tacks right next to the nail head so that the head of the tack covered them
For sure! I was making it up as I went and that was the biggest give away lol. Originally I was going to use aluminum angle stock to make metal banding around the whole thing and hide the nails, but when I started to play with it I just didn't like it and wanted the build to be a bit more beginner friendly. I like your idea tho. That would have worked nicely
@@SkillTree maybe next time you could do that as a leveling up build for more advanced techniques 💪
The only pro I can say about the choice of lock is, if the group has a rogue in it picking it would be a viable option(even without proper tools). A bobby pin wave rake should be enough.
All the rest was awesome. This helps make a project I've been considering viable. A digital treasure vault contained within a wooden chest.

I honestly don't know any better sponsors for y'all
The alternative to weighing down the wood is to put clamps oriented on the top and bottom, alternating each clamp. This is a very common method of keep glue ups straight.
Love the final result! It would be interesting to see how you could decorate the keys to also fit the vibe next time you have a project with a lock
I made a chest to store rope actually and I had a similar technique. But I made the lid flat out of board and it warped after they were glued! I always need more clamps
Good video, needed a treasure chest as a prop for later in my DnD campaign.
You're well on your way to being a super villian, already have a little minion...
What a cool prop for a D&D session!!!
Just made a treasure chest but needed ideas to decorate. Awesome video and thanks for the tips!
Glad you liked it! Thank you for watching!
So...that skull clasp and leather masterlock cover with the baseball stitching? That gives it a really fleshy look...it could pass for an undead/necromancer/lich chest as well!
I've been wanting to build a chest for my wife so it's funny this video comes out lol
I hope it helps out😁
@@SkillTree yessir!
I'm really enjoying the narrative in this crossover. I can't wait for the next installment!
That wood burning thing is Japanese. I have also seen it in vintage Witco art. They would burn the wood so the soft grain was burned deeply. It made stuff look like drift wood.
Amazing build. I love your creative solution to your wood shortage. So totally something I would do. Also - how does one apply to be second-in-command in your world domination?
When I'm trying to make new wood look old I do a light uneven scorch and then a few coats of stain made from steel wool and vinegar (used up SOS pads and pickle juice if you're thrifty).
Awesome project. If TV and movies have taught me anything about ransom hand-offs, you need to at least bring some backup. It might be better to bury the chest in the woods to subvert Larp Shire's expectations.
I LOVE your comedic timing! The way you deliver words is so funny!
The crafting is also nice 😀
I am so glad I found this video! I am a beginner woodworker and this is exactly what I want for a first project
Big fan of the builds!
Awesome chest. Though I’d wanna attach the handles more securely. I would drill through the wood and then use copper rivets and washers
Fun project! I like your videos, as the projects are a bit more attainable to most people. I'd be interested to hear how you manage your tool maintenance. For example, what are you going to do to keep your plane sharp, how do you keep your leatherworking tools sharp etc. (I have my own systems, but always curious how others do it)
Goonies Never Say Die! Awesome Pirate chest my dude
I would like to see more episodes of you and Maddie together!
7:13 STAHP winking ate me.... (I think I fell in love)
For my fairy/DND themed shop I made a mimic about that size.
burning the boards helps with weatherproofing and rot a whole bunch (on top of looking cool)
Awesome build mix some sawdust and wood glue then pack in in the cracks for future builds.
Fence pickets make GREAT small project wood. Theyre still cheap after the wood inflation and decent quality
Excellent project! Excellent video! Now you need to make some pirate treasure to fill your chest! Melt aluminum cans into silver bars. Small baking Llosa pans. Grind down quarts to be gem! Washer coins? Use JB Weld to fill in the center hole? Sorry, I might be getting carried away here.
Greetings, Kit! Man, is there anything fire can't improve?
... don't answer that.
Hmmmmmm. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ayy congrats on the sponsorship! Is this the first one? I don’t remember seeing those before.
Now THAT'S how to do a mid-video promotion!
I love how you can use hand tools and make it look as effortless as you do. Too many people fill. The lack of power tools is a hindrance when it shouldn't be. Surprised you didn't use the octopus to cover the lock.
The chest looks awsome. What did you do to your hand? 🤔 I saw it taped up.
haha! '"Smells like burn.....and..... wonderful"
Pro - Tip , when predrilling a pilot hole for a nail , cut off the head of one of the nails you plan on using to make the hole.
Theres a story line now?
Oh yeah. And it’s only just begun….
@@LarpShire That'S right! I'm gOing to go on So many wholesome adventures with my new youtube home!
Great looking build! I am busy preparing for The Reckoning! Oh, I will be bringing at least one cask of "Holy Water" so I hope you are thirsty! :)
I paid $160 to ship my home made Witcher 3 alchemy chest to my daughter in Seattle. I wish I could have hand delivered.
Crazy right?!? It was only $30 extra for me bo bring a checked bag on a trip I was already taking lol
That is an easy way to make a case for a movie I'm working on. An old style looking doll would be in it.
First of all, really cool video guys! Second of all, congrats on 69k subscribers 😏
Before you burned it, you could have whacked it a few times with a heavy duty chain to give it a little more weathered/used look
Hey yo!! A sponsor! Nice, good work Skill Tree :D
Congrats on getting a sponsor, I look forward to seeing the world under your heel
From the look of his hands, he'll need those heels.
Thanks! Super excited for the growth! Couldn't do it without you all watching. So, thank you for that!
3:27
Casually flexes he lifts XD
Awesome as always!
channel that has a million subs in my heart
Totally love your builds! I have to admit I'm going semi obsessive that you didn't add leather straps inside to support and protect the hinges. It's just me, right? 🥴
Make bone armor for your forearms and some shin guards. 😊 please and thank you. Or a really cool look mace
Oh my god Clever was the villain the whole time!!! (Mind blown)
It would have been cool to tool in some swords on the lock leather to finish the pirate flag design.
Also hehe butt joint. I'm an adult what are you talking about?
dude! you got sponsered by skillshare! congrats
"at least not in that way" lol nice
My patner has just moved in with me, and we need more storage chests for the shed ect... I'm so making a pirate chest now
That's really cool!
No stain?? Also, you didn't explain how you wrapped the brass lock in leather... I noticed.
It was brief but he did reference an earlier video of his about the baseball stitch.
I would spill some cheap rum onto it before the seal so it smelled like rum! :)
I'd love to see Cl3ver's take on the different chests in Sea of Thieves, especially with the ornate facework or glowing bits. Downright would be awesome.
At 16:21, you show the skulls. What happened to your fingers on your left hand?
I mean.... you can always make yourself another since you don't wanna give it away? XD
I think you meant EPIC BOOTY, not EPIC Wooden Pirate Chest ;D
"Burn things responsibly"
WHY??? WHY NOT!!!!
Is a bakers dozen different in America or something? 😅
Are you going to Strike some Coinage to put inside?
I am actually perfect minion material. Just sayin
Well get your blue overalls on and come to my volcano base!
@@SkillTree I'll ensure that the volcano stays at a nice, comfortable working temperature
You still ramble along like a drunken sailor.
I was gonna make this, but my wife's dog shit on my bed and it just kinda took the mojo outta me.
Does anyone else hear the melody to paradise by coldplay in the skill tree intro or just me?
👍👍👍👍
Oh, nice a project without lea---....And there it is... I knew there was going to be leather in here somewhere.. Still had hope though..
What happened to your fingers?
