Hi Alex & Allen. Each trilogy of BTS albums is a journey through a main subject, in this case this era was not about individuation (Persona, Shadow, Ego) but rather about youth and its struggles against the pressure of society.
"Not Today" is one of the two lead singles on the repackage album "You Never Walk Alone". The music video was released on February 20th, 2017 and gained almost eleven million views within the first twenty-four hours. The lyrics of Not Today encourage listeners to keep fighting and to not give up. With the dedication to “all the underdogs in the world” and the mention of “crow-tits” it is reminiscent of BTS’ earlier songs such as No More Dream, N.O and Baepsae which encourage young people (/students) to stand up for themselves and to not blindly accept and follow everything they are told.
The lyrics are quite clear and the message direct; I will develop only 2 passages that define this track:

The lyrics of this song were inspired by the speech of Aragorn in the final battle of The Lord Of The Rings: The Return of the King .

This passage is inspired by the speech of Martin Luther King Jr. that they didn't want to distort too much because it sounded so intense in its original form: “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward”
I think the message of this song is necessary today for any age group, especially now with what the United States and the rest of the world is going through.
I still admire the courage of BTS at the time to dare to make such commitments and to speak out so much despite their age, knowing that they had to face at the same time an industry that discriminated against them and an oppressive government (which fortunately has since fallen giving way to a flourishing democracy). I believe that true revolutionaries reveal themselves in troubled waters and not in calm waters; those who do in the latter case are often but not always opportunists.

Honestly, I see this more as an empowerment kind of song. Like an anthem type of thing. Much like ON. But cool thing about BTS music and MVs is that we all can interpret things in our own ways.

The first time i listened to this song i got totaly chills, the music is so damn good, the choreo is so great, same vibe as BEAPSAE And 21st century Girl's..

Well, from my perspective the people in black are supporters, so I guess ARMY. You see, at first there is a limited amount of this characters and after the guys get shot and run again there are waaaay more people in black. As in "we come back but stronger" 😎✨

They performed this on the Speak Yourself tour. It was the 2nd song right after Dionysus. The hype was strong! They did the dance routine with back up dancers. Also, the hooded figures represent their shadows like you said. They are the past trying to do harm. They represent the same hooded figures from Fire (they literally choreograph a gun as part of the dance and aim it at the boys). These hooded figures do not represent ARMY. The boys have to confront the past and learn from it and not run from it...but except it. That’s why later in the video they control the movements of the shadows and dance together.
Not Today is amazing live, look for a video that shows Dionysus and Not Today from their Speak Yourself tour.
Not Today would be awesome if performed by the right marching band.

I saw Alex being confused when they said "crow-tit" so I'm gonna put here a short explanation :)
BAEPSAE (CROW-TIT) : A Korean bird, called Crow tit in English. There is a common idiom/ saying : "the crow tit will break it's legs trying to walk like a stork". Other translations include try-hard and poser. Basically trying to be something that your not.
BTS refers to themselves as baepsae because they are not part of a big name entertainment company and they are still becoming international idol stars. They are proud to be baepsae.
And on that note, i would totally recommend you listen to bts' song called Baepsae (lyrics + dance practice cause it's so worth it and funny + explanation of the song). you heard the song once already when you reacted to one of their live medleys in their concerts, but you should definitely listen to the original!

The backup dancers play both the role of haters and ARMYs! If you watch the dance practice (or the choreo version of the MV) you will notice the backup dancers essentially become props throughout the choreography. Like before jhope's verse, they formed a wall that the rest of the guys broke through and then formed a tank, miming it rolling towards BTS. But they also represent ARMY like when everyone dances together in formation and especially at the very end when they are forming the lines for the "marching" section of the choreo; if you pay close attention you can spot the members pulling dancers up to help them stand tall.

My take on the people in black is that it’s haters and shadows first holding them back and then chasing them...and you can see two parallel storylines...in one reality they succumb to the negativity/darkness (I.e. get shot) but in the other reality they say not today and survive. Crow tits is what a species of very active tiny birds are called. It is also a metaphor for thr "try hard" generation of young Koreans fighting for their place in the sun. Inspirational to the max. Your work is great, do what you do because it fly. Stay well

I get that you guys didn’t get the crow tits part but a little insight which will be cool is that’s crow tits is baepsae in Korean which is the name of one of their old song ( it’s also called silver spoon ) also one of their more political btw. Their is no MV for it but a really cool Dance practice and more importantly tge song is throughfully explained by DKDKTV ( from a Korean POV which will explained the why if crow tits basically) you should really watch it !

In regards to the dancers in black are "bapsae", the underdogs, the millennials, the oppressed.
(The lyrics "Hey bapsae (crow-tits), everyone, Hands up!") A crow-tit is a small bird. In the aerial shots BTS and the dancers look like a flock of birds flying in formation.
There is a Korean saying, "If a crow-tit walks like a stork, it will break its legs." In other words, trying to become something it is not. I searched your reactions, and I was surprised you had not done reacted to BTS' "Bapsae". There is a dance practice and a live performance, but no MV.

Ok let me tell you something.... This is Amicy's youtube channel.... repeat after me AMICY.... not Elina's channel!! The guys want to see what the guys are singing and rapping about in the lyric vid first so after they can watch the MV without missing anything by trying to read the lyrics too... so if you don't like they way the guys do things on their OWN channel plz find someone else that's most likely not paying attention to the mv at all cause ppl tell them they don't need lyric vids...
