I will never do what you do, ( one of those random non tree cutting guys that watches tree cutting content) 8-) but to see the skill and experience at work is amazing.
I have 3 trees that I needed trimmed, 1 is right at the corner of my house. I got 3 different quotes and the average of the 3 quotes was $8000. So, 3 weeks ago I bought a used 55ft bucket truck for $10,000 and about $1000 worth of equipment and, after watching your videos, I have been trimming my trees with great success... including some speed line cutting. One of the best things I've learned from your videos is how to cut a branch but leave enough that the branch hangs on until it's aimed straight towards the ground. But I still tie a safety line to it, before I cut it, if I need to make sure I have total control of the limb. I really enjoy your videos and have learned A LOT from them!!! Even if I loose $5000 when I sell the truck , which I don't think I will, I will still be money ahead and will have the satisfaction of learning a new skill. Thank You Sir!
Mr. August there is a lot of people that watch you, of all sections of the totem pole, and I’m sure even some not even on the totem pole, don’t know it unless we know it, it’s all about choices, experienced choices keep it going till the next one, your videos are appreciated by the ones that know what you do, because the videos don’t do shit justice unless you’re actually up there doing it, videos by the ones that are experienced and know what they are doing make it look so easy but the ones that actually know appreciate the minimal camera effect, Long story short, you’re appreciated, keep doing you, you’ve earned it 💪🤠😎👍, i’ve climbed 20 years and I respect every video you put out
You have inspired me to go from timber cutting professionally (Midwest lumber, veneer) to buying climbing gear and have a dream of a bucket truck and good sized chipper soon. I have done a few removal with houses and garages underneath thanks to your techniques my first whoopsie hasn’t happened yet.
Thanks for the cut techniques August. It Looked like a difficult Tree, but that's what you specialize in. I learn more from the difficult ,and sketchy Trees. Great job.
Ah yes the dark arts of cutting👍🤙... Did line clearance when I first started tree work the slice cut (We called it spear cut cuz it came down like a spear) One of my favorites I have definitely almost screwed it up a couple of times though Dull saw or I zip through it at two horizontal of an angle and it's sat on the little spar 🤦... Been watching you for a lot of years man still love watching you You've taught me more than you'll ever know 👍🤙
August I've been watching for years now and the sequential peels away from obstacles has forced me to comment! That's one I'd never thought of! Thank you so much for sharing your joy in tree work, I have the same love and respect for the work I do here and always share your videos with greener climbers to compound and elaborate on points I make to them. Thanks for sharing your passion and attention to minutiae it's valuable to all of us in the tree game and even any line of work..
Thanks Cederick 👊🏼🤠 that cut is cool on certain woods in certain places because the “sequentialness” of it allows for a clearance arc unattainable with one (unrigged) cut. Also, peel-hold is more sure, weight wise, incrementally, than all at once.
Like a train beatin ya to death. Great analogy brotha! Love what you are doing for our industry. Really enjoying the panther conversion on my light saber. Shredville! Population 1.
I been a logger for 45 years have a lot of different cuts and ways to fall them and depending what kind of tree as well as other factors we lfearn the short cuts tricks. I wrong before there is a difference between a surgeon August Hunicke and a butcher me the logger I have told any people that it one thing is the same we are in very dangerous work and we all want to go home alive altogether . August I have worked with tree surgeons but I have to say you are one of the best I have every seen bless you my brother you are in my prayers. Love watching you.
"Some entities somewhere, that I don't care about." August, I feel the same way. Safety is #1 but after working for Asplundh I realized that you can safety yourself out of a job or any profit. When you go to far with it. If your just gonna be extremely safe and cautious then dont climb the tree in the first place. I really appreciate you sharing the knowledge.
Great job August! Freestyle is so much more fun especially with many targets to avoid. Birch has to be the world's most amazing hinge material its mind blowing how you can cut even large limbs and they almost never break free.
August, "can I keep 4 guys busy on the ground?" Also August,"yep!!" That was awesome to watch!! I enjoy the way you rip through those trees when you have the chance! The axes look great Jeff..
I’m a vet like you and I relate to how you look at trees and go about it. My saw rips a 201 16inch and pept up. So I fast cut logs if needed. A lot of people think it’s in pushing a saw through a tree. It’s a finesse between just full throttle and a slightly pressure. I actually shake it if it starts to lug. I’m sure your understand what I mean. Your a true master and your trait. I’m a east coaster monster oaks and maples wires on one side homes on the other. And of course the ever plant life and yard yard imaginable. I’d done that Burch pretty much just like you did. But why that Echo. I hear it it’s ripping is the 200’s and 201’s to heavy. And yes my hands hurt so bad. My thumbs are hurting all day every day. Good day sir! Climb on!
I just want to say Austin I enjoy watching the videos your excellent what you do keep up the good work and stay safe also tell your crew they do a good job and to stay safe as well I like cutting trees but I do it from the ground I learned a lot from the ground working with a with a tree company before but I've never learned to climb there's something I'd like to do in the future but I'm getting older and I got some bad news so it's probably not a good idea no more but I know the ground stuff tell your crew to stay safe and you have a blessed day from Chris Scott I live in Massachusetts so far away I live in Worcester Mass it's a near Boston Mass 49 mi anyway well you have a good day buddy
In line clearance there is a rule every company in the US teaches and enforces, when working near or over any primary lines always set your tie in point up so in the event of a slip the climber will not swing into the lines so it wouldve been best to use one of the spars behind you for tying in
I know what a Cruiser Ax is,my dad was a logger all over Oregon,Northern Ca and Washington State. Oh yeah,I'm 75 years old. My Dad would have loved your videos
So cool how you mastered the peel cut! In my head I was calling it a hinge cut because that’s what it reminded me of, a hinge. Now I know the proper term. I hope you had an amazing Father’s Day with your beautiful and precious family!
I like how you calculate each cut. I did not know how you were going to cut each one but as soon as you started cutting I could understand your thinking. Have a good one from west Tennessee
Your awesome man. Thanks for taking the time to not just film and edit but to give us younger guys something to aspire to. I’d definitely rig a lot of that but it was beautiful to watch to work.
Ps you and your team, you’ve earned your place you and your team make it happen, that’s a lot of the battle is a man and his team nowadays it’s hard to come by, and that’s a loaded comment because you have surpassed a lot of battles and still battle every day to make shit happen but you have a team, a great team that helps you through, that’s hard to achieve 👍 good on you, keep it up you are admired by many
That Bar-Chain-Saw combinaton is perfect for that type of job and tree. It allowed you to quickly make all those different types of slices and cuts to get that tree down with very little rigging in a crowded corner of the yard quickly and safely with hazards abounding. I have that saw but don't have the Panther bar and 1/4 pitch chain yet. It's amazing how long it runs on one tank of gas as compared to my 201T. Thanks for all the great examples.
I’m thinking about tree climbing an cutting on my own for tree control in my backyard , I’ve repelled before an still have some of my equipment but I’m thinking tree repelling and the use of ropes might be a different animal , I keep learning from your vids ! Keep showing your skills and knowledge for us noobs ! Thx August an Crew !
My neighbor is having trouble finding a crew to take down a dead walnut. Power lines to his house only on 2 sides. What you just took down looks way more difficult. Your experience shows in the different cuts that you use to place and position limbs where you want. I am not in the business but the whole crew in my opinion is exceptional. Jeff's axes make me want to join Instagram. I would be proud to own either one.
Tell your neighbor to call the power company and ask for forestry, Sometimes they will be willing to help and get the tree cut past the wires for you so then you can have it taken down the rest of the way. He might just have to call a few times and keep bugging them to come out and look at it though.
Awesome advice. Never even thought to use an open face cut with no back cut before. I am a huge fan of not rigging out if we have a clear drop zone. Its just as easy to spend 30 mins with a little soil, seed and straw for any major ankle twisters when we are done.
Thank you for this video our yard is also all new guys there are six of us foreman that all made that position in 7 months or less (zero prior tree experience) (also we’re 3 years in at this point) we pretty much all came together and figured it out. While I know none of us are the best climber in the world we are apparently the best yard for safety and climbing in our region it’s just neat to see someone in another portion of the industry doing what we do everyday I wasn’t sure if it was like that or not a lot of tree work I feel is very intuitive and practicing cuts in low risk situations builds the bank of knowledge that you can pull from to get those tricky cuts made safely.
Got introduced to what you call a slice cut this year. And I learned 35ft up drt that train whipping past ya lol I was okay didn’t phase me but as soon as you described it I had to speak my peace 💪🏽🙏🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 thank god for helmet goggles
I work for top notch tree service and we love your videos! Plus we also need to sub you out on a upcoming job with your crane! Kyle will be in touch with ya! Keep up the good work! Love the videos!
@@AugustHunicke 150 a day right LOL. Great video, with many different techniques, and a great tree/yard to show them on. So much to learn, thanks for sharing.
I'm a young tree guy 1 year or so under my belt. Birch trees have some interesting properties that allow those peel cuts. Some trees won't be favorable for this technique. Correct me if I am wrong. That was fast. The first time I saw a slash cut my mind was blown. Very useful in some situations. Nice work
Also that bar reminds me of a bar i saw a guy chainsaw carving with. Very little kickback if not any right? I believe I saw a slight kickback when you were one handed cutting that branch so it went away from the yucca. Maybe it wasn't idk. Company I work for would never allow me to do almost any of that....
I have not seen a birch tree that big since I worked for Eric's Tree Service in Grants Pass Oregon. I'll be visiting Grants Pass this year to see my daughter. I would like to work for you a couple of days if that is possible.

I'm in the market for a chainsaw. I have always bought stihl saws but I liked the echo that you were using in this video. I was curious what model it was, and if you were using a 12 or 14 in bar.
Using 3 peel cuts to shorten a branches swing away from the roof and gutter is something to behold. Legendary details.
I'm proud to say that I envisioned that happening. Legendary status for sure. Blessed to be watching this ✊

Great work. 15 years as a climber. I love doing this type of work without rigging, it makes one feel really good about there work.
That job qualifies as "Tree Surgery" Very well done

Brother 100% you did that tree exactly the way I would have done it all the way to even your choice of cuts.
Birch is a great firewood, almost zero ash. Good video guys.💚🌳💚🌳👊👍
It has a high creosote content however and a steady burning of birch will clog up your chimney and increase the risk of a chimney fire.
aaaaaah I never thought about waiting to cut it off when doing the spear trick and always got smacked hard. Learn something new every day!
Impressive as always!
Wow a Silver Birch! Have you moved to Scandinavia/UK? 😂 love them on a serious note

Hi August it been awhile lol, I would not climb for 150. But in 75 I remember working for 3.50 an hour
I'm pretty sure rhat is the cruiser axe that is hanging on my wall now 😁 Red elm handle is beautiful.
Still one of the best production climbers in this solar system. But right after I watched this I tried to peel a huge slash pine limb over a home.
I was out of work and legit learned how to climb trees mostly through these videos and I had a family to take care of thanks @Augusthunicke
I’m interested in those axes 🪓 especially the wedge! I don’t have any socials, oh well great video ❤️✅🪵
I’ve been using the same echo for about 3 months now. I’m always amazed by the gas efficiency to power ratio.
Echo deserves appreciation.
Looks like that smaller bar & chain really helps with how much gas the saw uses & so very nice & fast with that small kerf. Seems like the saw itself should last a lot longer with less cutting resistance so a win win:)
Impressive taking notes👍
A question August. On the slice cut, what is the reaction difference between a live tree and a dead tree? I guess I should note that there is no undercut (stating the obvious) which, I would also note, that on those branches hanging over wires, there is also no undercut, otherwise that approach wouldn't work and, lastly, I might note that that would not work on a dead tree (is that a great run-on sentence or what!). Thanks!
That 2nd 🪓 is beautiful how can I get one of those
Tying up to rotten branch seems more safe than playing with 2 sharp axes while driving :-D
Which one of the todays trees did you enjoy more?
Hmmm, same I guess
Class act August, Great Tree work.
