EU and China hold tense trade talks | DW News

  • The EU's top trade official says Chinese policies are fueling uncertainty among European companies in the country. Valdis Dombrovskis made the comments during a visit to Beijing where he's been holding talks with the country's Vice Premier He Lifeng.
The visit comes at a time of heightened tension. Earlier this month, the EU launched a probe into Chinese subsidies on electric cars - a move that prompted counter accusations of protectionism from Beijing.
Another thorny issue concerns the possible implications of Beijing's re-vamped anti-espionage law, which some European companies fear could lead to regular business activities being labeled as espionage.

Interesting report. The two points mentioned - Labor Shortage and energy demand are big problems for most of EU. The energy problems are created by EU themselves. Germany had shutdown its nuclear power plants and started to rely on Russian gas, now they are paying the price. Nuclear power is clean and yes, it is safe as long as skilled workers operate them. Its crazy to see Germany rely on other sources when it can easily just be self-reliant for its energy needs.

In an interview, Jorgensen said that as the Russia-Ukraine war continues, the EU will use all methods to survive the next winter energy crisis. She admitted that it will take decades for Europe to It will take time for natural gas to be phased out, and in the meantime, natural gas will be purchased primarily from the United States.
"We (the EU) are going to need some fossil fuels in the coming decades...in this case, American fuels," she said.
Reports indicate that measures the EU will take include expanding the proportion of renewable energy.

There is no benefit for China to subsidize car to Europe. Besides Chinese manufacturers sell their car more expensive in Europe than at home. Reasons? Profit! Europeans in general have more buying power anyway since their standard of living is also way higher than in China. If they still manage to price their car lower than the European cars it simply means either the cost production for European cars are too high or they take too much profit, to the point they lose their competitiveness.
