To Avoid damaging black filters and make installation Easier - First install blocking plugs and then Filters. This will reduce awkwardness of installing blocking plugs while filters are in (blocking the arm and hands of the installer/customer). The first item listed under the "Assembly Instructions" is to clean your hands and the Berkey system to prevent contamination of components. I primed the filters but didn't clean them. Is this important? I thought I only had to clean them about once a year, I didn't know I had to clean them before using.
Cleaning the filters with a Scotchbrite pad is the way you prime them before first use. If you haven't done this, the filters will be slow to filter the water and won't last as long. Go ahead and remove your filters and prime them with a Scotchbrite pad like the demonstration video above and you're good to go.
I bought a Berkey Go. The top piece should be a bit longer. Other than that it's a great replacement to buying bottled water. Endless supply of clean water wherever I travel. Berkey filters may last forever.
