Recovered addicts can be insufferable socially. Being an ex addict or ex alcoholic becomes a new super human, and very special, identity that places them above ordinary humans. They are often in love with the new self and you should be too.

I was depressed for a long time and it’s true that I was worried about losing my creativity from healing, being a professional musician and all. While I’ve found my creativity to be stunted, it’s not so much that I can’t be creative at all. I’ll take the peace over the loss of creativity. The big side effect is I do feel a bit lost at sea when I’m not anxious all day from my depression and that’s taking some getting used to. My life is a lot less chaotic now that I’m stable and not chasing after a high or toxic relationships and other issues that I invited into my life.

People with bad addictions are indeed very protective of their beloved addiction and don't like others pointing out they may have a problem, even suggesting harm reduction maybe worth a try is anathema to them.

Thank You with all my heart. Youre the first person that has spoken the truth in this matter. I think the increase in anti social addictions is due to the narrowing of socially acceptable pathways. If a person isnt suited to the corporate grindstone, they are rejected. This pathway has become more and more narrow throughout my lifetime. There used to be opportunities for individuation. In these times, even traditional occupations have become corporatized. The opportunity to become a contributing member of your community has been converted to a contributing member of society. Charity has been consumed by the State. Fewer and fewer are the chances at acceptable behavior. Even our famiily menbers begin to demand conformity in fear of social rejection. The ability to produce an income is a powerful motivator. But what if the constrictive environment is alien to you? In reality, its alien to all of us. Some are able to maintain the act before falling down flat. Some panic and run. When faced with the optiion of conformity or failure, they choose fantasy.

The subheading for this video should borrow from the old 80s Huey Lewis and the News song “I Want a New Drug”. The lyrics are a perfect fit. 😆

Exactly addiction IS a choice end of the day and I'm sick of hearing it's a disease. It's trauma based not a disease. People saying they had no choice is a cop out to avoid accountability, as addicts do.

I’m curious, you mentioned idealization of the substance. Let’s say an addict discards the substance like a narcissist discards his victim. Is the substance again re-idealized which leads to relapse?

    • @samvaknin

Like always, your perspective is nuance, original, supported by facts and observations. Also, your presentation answers thr question, why is rehab such failure?
I noticed you have done lectures for an audience in Mexico City twice. Do you have any plans to teach in Mexico or to collaborate with a Mexican University? It would be an exciting to have you teach in our country.
