Since I am such an enthusiast of our Holy Week in Marikina, because I used to reside there since I was born until we moved out to Quezon City (lived in Marikina for 8 years, now 17 years old), I spent my entire vacation researching and learning various facts and trivia about Santo Santo through utilizing available resources. (special thanks to Flickr lol) An example of what I found out is that the Virgen del Santisimo Rosario that is brought out every month of October, was actually the Virgen de la Alegria back in the day, sans the Niño of course. (I hope the camareras will use her again as the Alegria someday) But here are the things that left me really INTRIGUED and CURIOUS: 1. Why did the OLA church use to have TWO SEPARATE PROCESSIONS back then? As a former Sta Elena resident, I am fully aware that 3 different processions from different churches pass by our neighborhood, namely OLA (so-called by locals as "Romano"), IFI Paliparan (which they call "Tamporista" for some reason, by the way, why?), and lastly, IFI Sto. Niño (Aglipay). However, based on the random old posts I’ve encountered online, it seems that they’re referring to OLA church having 2 separate processions. 2. Secondly, if you’ll watch this video ruclips.net/video/wFF2Dx9HZfE/видео.html it shows that the carrozzas of Maria Cleofe, Huling Hapunan, Nazareno, Virgen de la Soledad, and the Santo Sepulcro (now called Santo Entierro due to the absence of the Calandra) took a different route away from the rest of the other images that participated in the procession, as they passed through C. Cruz Street, instead of J.P Rizal. My theory is that this occurrence is related to what I’ve mentioned before about OLA having two processions back in the day. Why did this specific scenario took place? 3. Lastly, what was the reason for the establishment of the MCSOA or the Marikina Catholic Saint Owners Association? I hope someone knowledgeable about our Holy Week’s history will enlighten me regarding these matters because I’d really love to learn more about the centuries-old traditions of my hometown. I would also love some recommendations of online reading materials about it. Thanks!
Hi Joanne, allow me to respond to your inquiries. By the way, I am Rodel Enriquez, Camamero of La Traicion and one of the current Kapatiran Representatives to Holy Week Procession Committee: - Regarding Alegria also known as Birhen ng Pagkabuhay. You are correct, the image of Virgen del Rosario and Alegria was previously the same icons. In the early 1980s, a new image was commissioned to maintain the sanctity and identity of the said Marian representation. - About the "separate processions." Came 2005 and 2006, there was a disagreement between the Holy Week Camareros and Parish Admins, and one of the major concerns was the route. Hence, two processions materialized. - MCSOA or the Marikina Catholic Saint Owners Association came from the metamorphosis of SAMA-SAMA or Samahan ng may Santo sa Mahal na Araw. This group was founded in 1985 by Emmanuel Ignacio and Catalino Angeles. The main rationale is to gather the cluster of Camareros and be one for the parish. May the following notes give additional information. Thank you.
@@dellquez I know that it’s been a while since I last watched this video and I just happen to stumble upon this comment of mine again. I just want to say thank you for the reply, Mr. Rodel! I am enlightened po and I appreciate it a lot, especially as a former Marikina resident and an enthusiast of our holy week processions. I really love your La Tración tableaux and every time it passes by in front of me I just couldn’t help but have goosebumps and make the sign of the cross as I inhale the smell of incense coming from the karo. (although I admit that as a kid, I used to be afraid of it only because of the soundtrack, and also with the “Paghampas" for obvious reasons LOL) It’s good to see the processions of Catholic churches in our city once again after four years without them. I grabbed the opportunity of watching them personally once again, and I can feel that my inner child is full of joy. Unfortunately, even though it is understandable, I’ve noticed the absence of several carrozas such as the "Pagbibinyag" and "Pagbuhay ni Hesus kay Lazaro", so hopefully they will be able to join again starting next year. Even though I am proud to say that my hometown has the longest procession in the metropolis, I cannot deny the fact that there are still missing carrozas that can be added to the line-up. For instance, the image of SAINT DISMAS, which I personally think is an essential character in the passion of Christ. (and can even be considered as the first-ever saint.) Curiously, the Aglipayan church in our city already have it as part of their processional line-up since 2017 (I could be wrong, but I think they’re also the first ever in the country to include a solitary image of the saint on a Holy Week procession), so here’s another question from me if you don’t mind: *Could there be any reason why it is still not part of OLA’s processions aside from the possible current lack of interest in commissioning an image of him?* If there answer to my question is none, hopefully an image of him, or at least a scene depicting the conversion of the good thief, will soon join the procession of OLA parish. Although I understand that the aim is all about catechizing the people, and not competing with other "long" processions such as that of Baliuag, I hope that the number of images will increase even more until it reach 100. And after watching the holy week documentaries uploaded last year, I hope that the past custom of the people lining up throughout the procession will *ONCE AGAIN be practiced,* (even if It may seem impossible due to the high volume of participants), as it will make the procession organized and even more solemn. (dare I say, perfect!) Nonetheless, Semana Santa in Marikina has a special place in my heart, and who knows, maybe I would be able to comission a Santo in the future, so that I’d no longer merely watch, but join the Holy Week processions of our parish.
may decree nga from the vatican that allows the processions to be held at later dates pero discretion na ng bishops yun kung iaaprove. sayang nga lang at di pa rin puwede due to social distancing rules na kailangang ienforce
