@ 11:55 It seems that Petruchio might also be in somewhat of a disguise, when he, bragging of his exploits (that didn't happen), is himself, in some kind of alternate reality in his own mind. So, just to add to another level of disguising or deception going on, with Petruchio's putting on of airs. What a wonderful lecture. Thanks

Kate is a smart woman living within the constraints of a society which doesn't allow women to make the choices which profoundly affect their lives. The society portrayed in the play also allows the gentry to manipulate, play upon, (kidnap) and abuse the lower classes. Watch how each character navigates within their role in this system of heirarchy. One gets to play a lord because he is capable helpful and trustworthy, but narrowly escapes being charged with murder. Another feigns stupidity to have more freedom as a servant. Kate rejects this system but when confronted with the harsh reality that she can literally be starved, or killed at the whim of her husband, she sees how he views things, from his extreme privilege, and forges a path to achieve power and autonomy within her circumstances. Her final speech calls out the way the men have been conditioned to view women. Showing the other two ladies how precarious within their own relationships, is the agency they thought they had.
