How Starting YouTube and Moving to Japan Changed My Life!

- One small word-YES-completely changed the course of my life. In this video, I’m diving into how saying yes to starting a RUclips channel, traveling to Japan, and moving to Fukuoka turned my life upside down in the best way possible.
I’ll take you through my journey: from awkwardly starting RUclips, to a life-changing three-month trip to Japan, and how one video (featuring someone very special) led to finding my new home-and my wife!
Since moving to Japan in 2024, I’ve grown an incredible community of over 3,500 subscribers, worked with cities in Kyushu, and built a life I’d been dreaming of for over 15 years. This is my most personal video yet and I'm so happy to finally make this one legends!

Congrats to you both, and Kaori is lovely! I haven't seen the earliest videos, so didn't see that she was on one. When you said she'd been there the whole time, I thought you meant as on a technical side, such as camera person.
Just adding in the weather to carry over from our chat on the previous video, if I didn't win this, I was in two minds about making my Tokyo trip (inc. a day or two here and there, outside the city, if I can get there and back within the day) either for 3 weeks in late March-to-mid April, to coincide with Sakura season, or approx a month later, so that coincides with Golden Week, as there'd be a lot going on. So, maybe a week before that to get into things, and a week after.
Do you have any advice on that for a first trip? I know it'd be a bit warmer for the latter, but then both are much better than it is here at the moment 😁
As an aside, I did see another guy's video, who's up in the snowy rural regions, and he loves that they get 1-2ft of snow overnight, sometimes! Oh man, that's too much for me!
Thanks so much! Yeah, Kaori has been part of things from the start, just more behind the scenes until now. 😊 Well except for the little egg on the channel that no one knew about until now also haha
For your trip, both options have their perks! Sakura season is stunning but also super crowded, while Golden Week is packed with events but even busier in certain spots. If you want to experience Japan at its most festive, late April into early May could be fun, but if you’re after the classic cherry blossom scenery, late March to mid-April is the way to go. Either way, you’ll have an amazing time!
And yeah, 1-2 feet of snow overnight sounds like a bit much-even for Japan’s winter lovers! 😆

Fantastic start to 2025 mate, and what a great introduction to your lovely wife too! Who doesn’t love Sushiro? It’s consistently good in my opinion. Do you remember what you had on your first date? How about doing a video at some stage comparing the different kaiten sushi chains, such as Sushiro, Hamazushi, Genki, Kurra, and Kappa? I’m sure that would be hugely popular-just my two yen’s worth. As for what sushi I had, I wouldn’t have a clue to be honest with you, but I’m sure I was trying to eat less than I normally would because when I’m normally there, I smashed so many plates haha

What a great story! This resonates so strongly; I feel like I'm in a similar situation of discovering a new country where I want to relocate to but fighting all the doubts, challenges and insecurities in my mind. Making the decision at almost 50 makes it all the more difficult. I'm returning to Japan for a second three week trip next month and YES is the word I'm keeping in mind; positive vibes needed for positive outcomes.
You know the feeling! It's so crazy how much just saying Yes more in life can really add so much more to your life. It can lead you down paths you'd never previously would have taken and open up great opportunities that never would have come. It's legit turning right instead of left, you never know whats around the corner. Keep that positive mindset and if its something you really want, write it down, a step by step goal on how to get there and make it happen!

I've been out of the loop. Spending some time at my second home in Arizona getting it ready for rent. Going to make some good money for the winter season. Much nicer weather here than the northern states and the snow belt. It's a good opportunity to make money to pay for the house expenses. Very nice to meet your wife, she seems like a very nice person! Funny how things happen. You are the legend!

I went through that exact same decision so I know exactly where your mind is at. I legit gave up everything from career, friends and family to come and live here and it wasn’t easy.
You just have to be absolutely sure it’s what you want but also know that Australia will always be there.
I guess you have to ask yourself the question, do I want to be asking later in life, I wonder what it would’ve been like if I lived in Japan and just picked up and went?

I visited Fukuoka last year at the recommendation of a Japanese bartender in Taipei of all places. Really liked it a lot. I think Tokyo is still my favorite place just due to how huge it is with endless things to do, but I did prefer the charm of Fukuoka to Osaka for example, which I visited on the same trip. Will definitely go back.

Yeah I totally know what you mean, I do love Tokyo and majority of my friends and history with Japan is based there though nowadays, Im not sure I could live there.
The way I always phrase is it, you don’t want to live in the party but you want access to it. Fukuoka is the perfect balance to live with access to the rest of Japan easily.

@ Things have been good, though I'm definitely overwhelmed with choice paralysis. There's just so many things to check out that I end up doing not much at all. Finally got my desk set up so I can start working again which brings some nice normalcy into my life again haha.

Sometimes writing down all the things that you want to do or have heard of really helps. And then make an effort of ticking at least one of those off a week or so. Seeing a visually and writing it down, m really makes a difference!

It's crazy how simple saying yes can legit change so much. As I said at the start of the video, it does sound cheesey haha but it's actually so powerful saying yes more than no. It's always, everytime, led me to incredible places and experiences. This is the perfect example! 🙋🏽♂️🇯🇵

Yeah, we’ll see what the future brings with the videos and see what people are interested in. Having a car space here in the city is so expensive so I won’t be having a car any time soon. My dream car has always been to build a Datsun 510. So keep your eyes peeled for that one! 🙋🏽♂️

Hey man, great video! I'm interested to know what sort of visa you've ended up moving to Japan on, was it marriage and straight to a partner visa? Did you go on a different visa and end up getting married whilst out there?
Hey buddy, thanks so much for watching the video. Really appreciate it! I actually moved to Japan on a student Visa but I’m now on a spouse Visa.
I’d say if you want to come to Japan either a work Visa or student Visa is the easiest way but obviously they do require some financial backing. It took me quite awhile to save but it was all worth it to live out this dream!

Nah buddy, I do love Ohori Park but we drove around everywhere about an hour south of Fukuoka. The interview part was in a park in Kurume. During autumn the trees are beautiful there!
