I need to learn the basics of charcoal drawing for an art project I have been recently assigned. Most RUclips videos show time-lapses of really amazing and realistic pieces but I could not understand the logic behind their artwork. This video, while not the best drawing (probably because it's a sketch .-.) has by far helped me the most for some reason. I think you are not only gifted in art, but explaining to others how to do what it is you are doing, and I just wanted to show my thanks for your help!
"Most RUclips videos show time-lapses of really amazing and realistic pieces but I could not understand the logic behind their artwork." ... a good explanation of the limitations of time lapse video tutorials.
I would love to have such a gift to be able to look, interpret, pick up a drawing tool and make beautiful things happen. Always in awe of this ability.
its amazing how it came about in ,7 mins too!! I've not used charcoal much yet apart from a lesson doing an apple in charcoal on my course. I've now just started a portrait course and will be using charcoal so many thanks for this video, it helped a lot as I'm really wanting to try charcoal:)
Thanks, that really helped, now i know how to do it right, im just starting to learn how to draw using charcoal, you made it look so easy. I hope someday i can be as good. I like getting messy and all.
What is the paper type..? And what are the materials..like what company products do you use. The blending seems so smooth. You're genius. All the best!!
I just wonder what ik;d of paper you are using and what kind of otter materials? I hope you Will able to Antwerpen me. Thans Vera Munch. Love the way you are werking. Best Reghardt, Stef Bos
The eyes are generally located halfway down the entire head..not just the face. Pretty good instruction over all, I think I wouldn't ever blow on the drawing. One small bit of spit will create a permanent black spot. I think that background music is never a good idea. Here, the intrusion is minimal but still a distraction. If you know a melody, your mind tends to follow it instead of attending to the verbal text. The makers of 'Jeopardy' TV game show know this very well.
I hate the feeling of the charcoal on your hands and papers, the sound gives me chills too. Yet I want to try it when I feel confident enough I can actually use light and shadow well enough.
Like Zin Lim, you work from dark to light shade instead of the other way around. However, this method can only work when the artist is a veteran with a lot of experience. There is no way for beginners to learn this way with such confidence!
willow charcoal or...vine charcoal. Willow charcoal is made from the twigs of willow trees, burned to a degree of precise hardness for drawing. It contains no binders, therefore it can be easily erased, but because willow charcoal is brittle, it’s prone to breaking. Vine charcoal is almost the same as willow, except vine is made from the burning of grape vines. Vine also contains no binding agents, so it erases easily and is susceptible to breakage if not handled gently.
Hi, thanks for your post. Do you recommend a specific kind of paper? I've tried working on a 60gm layout paper but find the charcoal slip around a lot. Do you use vine or compressed charcoal?
What kind of eraser are you using? We're in our 4th week of drawing and we're doing negative shape, so this is a PERFECT compliment for my study! However I'm frustrated not being able to achieve the result I want because the eraser I'm using...any recommendation? Thanks!
vine and willow charcoal blend and erase easily. Compressed charcoal contains a binder which makes it a bit more difficult to erase and blend. The eraser is called a kneaded eraser. He calls it a 'putty rubber'.
Thanks so much Paul. Sheer brilliance. I'm just gutted I bought pencils instead of just the sticks. :( Another trip to the art shop ... what a shame ;)
Are you asking if you can apply oil paint over a charcoal sketch? If you do paint over charcoal, the charcoal will mix with the paint and you will create a mess. You would need to spray your charcoal sketch with a "Fixitive". This puts a film over the charcoal to keep it from smearing and mixing with paint.I believe hair spray can work, too.
OUr mapeh teacher gave us a project which is charcoal painting! We really are complaining because we don't have the materials and it's imposible to find those materials here in our province and worst thing, we don't even know how to do it. THIS VIDEO HELPED A LOT BUT STILL I DON't have the material
Well... If you for some reason can't order drawing charcoal products online, you can make your own by taking small twigs, or similar stems, vines... Wrap them in several layers of aluminum foil, and put them in the coals of a grill. It's about getting them really hot, while keeping oxygen out, so they don't burn. Look up tutorials for that. It's a pain, and hard to get a consistent product, but it's a fun experiment.
When i use charcoal my eraser can barely erase it... Is it because i use too much pressure with the charcoal? Is it the paper quality? Is it the eraser? o.O
I'm in dire need of help with choosing materials. It seems that my paper that I use for sketching is entirely useless for charcoal. It goes on the paper seemingly fine. Then even a breath can move the darkest bits away, while none of my erasers can really pull it back past any further than like a medium shaded 2HB darkness. Can anyone recommended some specific paper? Just a type even? Sketch paper is out and I'm positive my deleter paper would be worthless (pencil doesn't even stick to that stuff). Since it's still pretty far what the recommended descriptions I've heard I'm pretty sure putting it on my smooth Bristol would just be a waste.
+enginesnblades may I suggest: Strathmore gray tinted charcoal paper for small notebook strathmore whte charcoal paper for large pad willow chalk stems (to accomodate the charcoal pencils) use your fingers more often than a blending device
..but how did he erase the charcoal all so easily? and what kind of charcoal is he using? seems to me it's a compressed charcoal, but I knew that compressed charcoal don't erase like that easily
he says in the beginning he's using willow charcoal! in my experience, it most definitely willow charcoal. you can use vine to, but buying very very soft willow charcoal is the best tool for the technique in the video!
When you create a tutorial, not only should you say exactly what product you're using, but list them in the description. I've never used a paper that wiped that white, that easily, from charcoal, with a gum eraser, let alone my finger.
It's live and 7 mins. He'd spend time refining as he says, I'm pretty sure he'd get the likeness. I think this video is more about the process for us beginners who wouldn't have the first clue how to approach a portrait. I'd never have thought to colour the whole sheet then take away.
This shows that the artist must be confident about what he made....otherwise he will judge his artwork very quickly and start realizing it a trash!!!!!
Thanks, that really helped, now i know how to do it right, im just starting to learn how to draw using charcoal, you made it look so easy. I hope someday i can be as good. I like getting messy and all.
you liberated me. I have watched 3 times now. Ive done 2 faces using your suggestions, and I am much more happy. I love getting my fingers dirty!!!

Best tutorial on RUclips you described something that is complex so simplistically
I would love to have such a gift to be able to look, interpret, pick up a drawing tool and make beautiful things happen. Always in awe of this ability.
Amy Thomson Any one can learn. sure some people have a natural talent for it, but for those who don't, it's hard work. We can do it 🤘
love it. Wow 7mins and you made it look so easy.
Thank you. You’re explained the process simply, which is very helpful
Best charcoal tutorial I have seen so far! Keep it up
just got a set of charcoal tools, your basics helped me understand a lot about how these drawings work!! THX
''A nostril in the darkness...''
I just imagine a man walking in a cave, holding his torch and suddenly, he finds a big nose with extra big nostrils.
Fantastic to watch !!! Great vid -
You make it look so effortless! It was amazing how you created a face by shading and erasing!
Hey thanks a lot...just did my first charcoal potrait following you....loved doing it...thanks a lot!!!!
its amazing how it came about in ,7 mins too!!

That's amazing. Mind blowing. What type of paper do you use?
R.I.P Putty rubber...this was very practical and helpful. Thanks!

Nice video you make it look so easy!
interesting approach. I like it!
The eyes are generally located halfway down the entire head..not just the face.

Great demo, thank you.
I hate the feeling of the charcoal on your hands and papers, the sound gives me chills too. Yet I want to try it when I feel confident enough I can actually use light and shadow well enough.
Very cool video. I've never really enjoyed the sound of charcoal though.
that was literally amazing! Thank You so much for that :-)
what type of paper do you use here
I was shooketh throughout the video
With type of Charcoal are you using please specify

Have confidence that if you have done a little thing well.. you can do a Bigger thing well too 👍🏻👍🏻
I love this. Are you on Instagram?
Would it be so difficult to reply to some of the questions viewers have asked?
This helped a lot!! Thanks
This takes so much of the stress out of “drawing.” Thank you! What kind of charcoal stick is that again?
willow charcoal or...vine charcoal.
Renzo The opposite is compressed charcoal, if you make a mistake you cannot erase it and thus you can drop your draw in the bin.
Beautiful
cool!
but why you don't use brush instead of your hand to rub the charcoal?
what kind of paper do you use?
+Dessyana Damaidihati the natural oils from our hands work better with the coal
Hi, thanks for your post. Do you recommend a specific kind of paper? I've tried working on a 60gm layout paper but find the charcoal slip around a lot. Do you use vine or compressed charcoal?
MathinusG I don't know the paper, but he uses willow charcoal
What kind of eraser are you using? We're in our 4th week of drawing and we're doing negative shape, so this is a PERFECT compliment for my study! However I'm frustrated not being able to achieve the result I want because the eraser I'm using...any recommendation? Thanks!
a Kneaded eraser
What kinda paper did you use ..please tell me
awesome tutorial.what kind of charcoal is that?
Soft one
Vine charcoal
Which type of charcoal n eraser did u use..?.mine doesnot erase n blend so easily... please reply
vine and willow charcoal blend and erase easily.
Compressed charcoal contains a binder which makes it a bit more difficult to erase and blend.
The eraser is called a kneaded eraser. He calls it a 'putty rubber'.
is that a soft charcoal you are drawing with?
Jae Heon JUNG ....he is using vine charcoal, sometimes called willow charcoal. It comes in various lengths and thicknesses.
want to know about different types of charcoal pencils.....
wow i always done it soo carefully this guy blew my mind...
Would love to the finished price?
Marvellous.
Thanks so much Paul. Sheer brilliance. I'm just gutted I bought pencils instead of just the sticks. :( Another trip to the art shop ... what a shame ;)

You would need to spray your charcoal sketch with a "Fixitive". This puts a film over the charcoal to keep it from smearing and mixing with paint.I believe hair spray can work, too.
amazing
Do all willow charcoal give you that nice darkness to it?
Depends on the paper

What type of charcoal is he using?
willow sticks probably
Vine charcoal
Flora Kyomuhendo ...vine charcoal and willow charcoal are two names for the same thing.
Anyone know of any good deals for charcoal online?
When i use charcoal my eraser can barely erase it...
Is it because i use too much pressure with the charcoal?
Is it the paper quality?
Is it the eraser? o.O
A year later...I get this. I think I'm too heavy with the charcoal initially. It needs to be a light touch.
A man walks into his studio with white hands, he walks out with hands that are jet black lol.
Wow!
thank you :)
He's a fucking genius.
how do you erase like that...i am not able to get rid of the charcoal ones its on paper
looks like a KNEADED eraser, at art supply store.
i have the same problem i think it's because of the paper and i don't know what to use
I'm in dire need of help with choosing materials. It seems that my paper that I use for sketching is entirely useless for charcoal. It goes on the paper seemingly fine. how the fuck
..but how did he erase the charcoal all so easily? and what kind of charcoal is he using? seems to me it's a compressed charcoal, but I knew that compressed charcoal don't erase like that easily
it's not compressed charcoal

*sees video* ...what
What paper?
Any decent cartridge paper. 200g good
"chaw-kull"
Artillery only charcoal sketch
Dang! In 7Minutes!

Colm Kirk interesting comment from someone who has no tutorials on your channel
@@hr5873 ..I think his comment has merit nevertheless.
is this a reductionist way of drawing with charcoal?
yep, drawings as much about what goes on as what is removed
how can u keep it from wearing away ? :D
Try fixative spray or store very carefully after
I love your style but it looks nothing like the guy in the photo...
It's live and 7 mins. He'd spend time refining as he says, I'm pretty sure he'd get the likeness. I think this video is more about the process for us beginners who wouldn't have the first clue how to approach a portrait. I'd never have thought to colour the whole sheet then take away.
Wow..I've been doing it the stupid way hahahahh
Doesn't look like the same person to me.
I didn't understand a thing
This shows that the artist must be confident about what he made....otherwise he will judge his artwork very quickly and start realizing it a trash!!!!!
Thanks, that really helped, now i know how to do it right, im just starting to learn how to draw using charcoal, you made it look so easy. I hope someday i can be as good. I like getting messy and all.
