    Oh man, this is so on point! Because I was powerless as a child,(for various reasons,) I kept choosing people in my life that magnified my self-perception of being weak and powerless. Now 15 years later, (I'm 52) and after therapy, I began to see who I was truly meant to be. People are drawn to and influenced by my positive energy. I've always been this way, I just focused in the wrong direction for a very long time. Now that I see that I am an empowered, inspiring person, I suddenly keep getting supervisors who try to belittle me or exert their won power over me. I guess they are my teachers to help me learn to actually believe what I see in myself. :)

    Thank you Dan! During the pandemic, I've been working on myself. One big aspect of that is to not allow others be nasty and rude towards me. Recently, I was in a virtual meeting n I answered another mom's question on why I chose this school over that one. And one of the reasons was that because of my work schedule, it'll be difficult to drive my kids to and from school everyday. This mom got real snotty with me and said, "What do mean it'll be difficult? This is your kid and you have to commit!" I froze and thought, "Ok, what I've been learning is being tested right now." My mind was blank and so I just didn't say anything and focused on someone else. I never went back to talk to that mom. I was upset afterwards that I froze and didn't say something to shut this mom's rudeness towards me down. She kept trying to be rude towards me the whole meeting and all I could think to do was ignore her. Ugh

    • @TheWizardOfWords
      @TheWizardOfWords  3 года назад +8

      M, I think ignoring her is a perfectly fine way to handle such rudeness. And going blank is common for us all, which is why we all need communication PRACTICE--even if it is going over scenarios in our mind or in front of the mirror. If you deal with this mom again, remember that the "haves" and "shoulds" in your life are determined by YOU, not by anyone else. You determine how best to raise your child, and to what you should commit. A simple phrase that has served me well in the face of such comments is "Your comment was not helpful and your judgment isn't required." It's pretty straightforward and I use it only when a softer approach is falling on deaf ears. And always remember that it's not necessary to straighten out every rude mom you meet during the pandemic. If the words don't come, ignoring sends a strong message. There is too much "telling people off" in this day and age. Spotlighting their behavior or ignoring them are both good responses, in my opinion, to people such as the woman you described.

  • @gemmadidit4118
    @gemmadidit4118 6 лет назад +46

    Silver lining. I grew up with alot of negative judgement...so much so that I really don't rise to the bait of mean people. My challenge is to respond in an effective way. I very often SEE THROUGH bad behavior. Doesn't mean I want it in my life... I am a LOVING person...but I've walked away from alot of relationships because I just didn't need the drama...

    • @TheWizardOfWords
      @TheWizardOfWords  6 лет назад +7

      I'm with you, Deborah--including the growing up around a lot of negative judgment and learning how to deal with it--AND seeing through it to the core of the person, which is always love. Having said that, you certainly don't want unnecessary drama from those relationships that you choose (as opposed to relatives you can't choose!)

      Effective Communication Skills With Dan O'Connor I have trouble seeing the love in some behaviour. But I do see how as you say that people will vent their insecurity on you when you inadvertently hit their triggers. Maybe I get some of the attention you were hoping for or I'm just a little too giddy while you're feeling like crap...you wanna slap me down or take my crown(...!?...) It's very clearly NOT about me...and trying to get along with such a person is a lost cause, because they feel powerful by withholding approval.

    • @TheWizardOfWords
      @TheWizardOfWords  6 лет назад +6

      There are people like that, and sometimes you just have to walk away. It's difficult in a business environment when you don't want to quit your job (which is sometimes an option) but you don't want to be disrespected, either. That's one situation where effective communication tactics can be helpful.

    I’m confident that I’m:
    - warm
    - loving
    - generous
    - encouraging
    - wise, insightful
    And I am becoming more
    - effective
    - responsible
    - organized
    - mature
    - skilled
    - wealthy
    Yeah, Baby! Let’s get on this.
    Cheers!

    • @brightpage1020
      @brightpage1020 2 года назад

      My current initial reactions to frustrating circumstances or people can be:
      - snarky
      - snide
      - sarcastic
      - loud
      - cruel
      - obnoxious
      - distracting
      - mean spirited
      - cussy
      But that never helps, so today I am changing that to:
      - quiet
      - reflective
      - calm
      - soothing
      - peaceful
      - sensitive to others
      - graceful
      - kind
      I tend to mirror tones that come my way, especially negative ones - not meant to be awful as they come across but rather to show the difficult person what it’s like to relieve that - but that only adds to or extends the friction. I can change. Today, I am changing. By being more conscientious, I can set a better example for myself if no one else.

He was in Europe with my mother once and embarrassed her by going up to some young man with short short hair, who appeared to be resting on a military bag of some kind. My father approached the young man and said: "You look mean and ugly enough to be a Marine." My mother damn near died of embarrassment until the young man looked up, grinned and said "You're right and THANK YOU SIR!" Marines--ya gotta love 'em.

      @TheWizardOfWords  6 лет назад +3

      Hi Susan: If you could tell me a bit more about the communication challenges of those with Asperger's Syndrome, I can perhaps do a few videos that would apply. I'd hesitate to call it a series for people with Asperger's Syndrome because I'm not qualified to do that. But if I know the issues, I can certainly do videos on those topics and then you can decide if they're helpful. Hows that??
      Dan

    • @susanb.solstice4873
      @susanb.solstice4873 6 лет назад +4

      Dan,
      I'm no expert, however there are some problem areas of communication that many people with Asperger's share:
      Non-verbal communications:
      reading body language, or knowing how to use it effectively
      Eye contact : avoiding direct eye contact
      Conversations
      Tend to have one-sided conversations, without recognizing it.
      Literal interpretations, unable to pick up on nuances
      Reading other people emotions conveyed through speech
      Bullying: Asperger;'s kids and adults are bullied a lot. Any procedures for understanding when they are being bullied, and how to respond would be useful.
      Dan, these are a few ideas. If you could team with someone who is knowledgeable and has the condition , I believe you could create a dynamite presentation that would encourage and benefit those who struggle with Asperger's. You could spread more light in the world!
      Thanks for reading and responding to my suggestion.
      Susan

    You are the best thing that has happened to me this year. I've learned so much from your videos. Today I finally stood up to my co-workers and boss who expect that I drop my things to do theirs. • @TheWizardOfWords
      @TheWizardOfWords  3 года назад +3

      Janmaris, practice really does make perfect and remember, you are after results, not popularity. If your boss and coworkers got the drift that you are not their doormat--THAT'S the result. If their reaction makes you uncomfortable at first, or if you feel awkward because you're in new communication territory, that's OK. Keep the result in mind--always--and you'll feel GREAT about yourself!

I have a really unusual problem. my boss used to be my friend. now, for her, it is OK to have me do things that she won't ask anyone else to do. shit work. when I point out that I think that is unfair. " oh Angie will do it" she says it's because she expects more from me. when in reality she knows most of my co-workers will refuse to do it. she talks about me to other employees. I immediately thought I am calm, patient, and loving. I am working on being more calm and patient. I only picked loving, because I'm an introvert.
    On Sunday at work, I had to train a lot of new people. I must have had this in the back of my mind because a few people complimented me on my patience.
    I thought I misheard them. You mean my impatientence? No your very patient. It melted my heart. No one ever complimented me on that ever in my life, ever lol. Even though my insides were all in chaos, I succeeded in not letting it show. Maybe an occasional slip here and there, but progress! New sub! Definitely going to buy the book!

    Hi Dan, I have found your words very powerful Who Are You. And I believe unless you truly know who you are is when you can move on to the next stages. I have played your first 3 Video's over and over until I have grasped the concept. There is a lot of years of old habits to unshackle. So now I know its all about me and not about them, I'm starting to relies I can deal with nasty back stabbing people in the work force.

    the way we react on impulse is always the opposite of who we really are. To get a good sense of who you really are or who you were meant to be, consider what happens when you lose it. And recognize that you are the opposite of that

    • @guesswho5790
      @guesswho5790 6 лет назад

      crazy genX I don't think it's about opposites. For example, when someone is crying for help, one person may become violent over their vulnerability, while others become withdrawn and will isolate. It's still a cry for love and help, but it looks differently.
      There is only one healthy way to go about it, and that's being humble and honest about what you're truly feeling. I think we agree in that that's where our true selves can be found.

      Yes, we carry the tapes and frequently play the tapes. We all do, Arnold. It's something we recognize and try to overcome (or appreciate, depending on the tapes) our entire lives.

    Hi Dan! Amazing video! My coworker insulted me by calling me a push over. Another one was calling me grandma cuz she's in her late twenties, and I'm in my late forties. She talked loudly about her grandma falling. I know she gossips with another girl her age. These women are toxic ghetto bullies and I want revenge. However, having a way to assert myself around them may help diffuse the hostility they have. Although, they act juvinile delinquents from a horror show. I was surprised that even people working in the medical field talk shit about their patients. Here in Texas, unfortunately, nursing home abuse is number one in the nation. People who prey on the elderly are so evil. I believe that they treat me like I'm a fossil, and it really aggravates me. For example, a used car salesman kept referring to how his dad bought a car. He looked around 30 years old. I wanted to ask him his age, but I didn't. He made such a big deal about mine. Here in Dallas, the people are rude, disrespectful and very judgemental. I want to move, cuz there's also tons of alcoholics and perverts.

    On the question, who are you, I have four. Four areas in me that were wanting, allowing a nightmarish perception of the worst in people and the world, to filter in and be my 'reality'. Perception is important. It was time to give my ole subconscious suggestions to curb my anxiety, didn't want to back to panick attacks. I am peaceful. I am calm. My mind is free to be happy. I live without.
    This was my mantra. If only one in ten of these repetitions drop to the subconscious, over a small amount of time, perception changes accordingly. Even if I felt stressed with apparent appropriate stimuli in sight, I would repeat these my mind til a sense of relief came over me. Sorry, just felt inspired to share that.

    Thanks for sharing this Dan! I found it interesting when you said "if someone is trying to .... it's because they feel (that way)". What about when someone talks down to you? I'm in a position right now where someone is downplaying my role and I thought it was because I don't have "director" in my title.

    I'm new to this, but most of us truly learn how to speak as kids, then our lexicon remains at a certain level, except for communication experts, teachers, wizards of words like yourself!
    But it's precious to get to pick up on this and excel.
    It hasn't been easy dealing with a situation of hatred and envy directed at my recent fight with breast cancer and the views on life that changed after that. People notice a change and tend to attack when they're feeling threatened, too bad somebody actually said things that really hits where it already hurts, nasty things about my health condition and recovery, and it's become a cycle. But that was the only way I could tell it wasn't just something that slipped.
    It's especially harder when Cantonese is not my first nor second language, it's one that I learned by ear. My mother language is Portuguese, next comes English, so I've only got these 2 on my side when I'm shamed in front of a lot of people in Cantonese.
    Thanks so much for all this! I believe the tone, the posture, how we sit, how we stand, we communicate with all of that!

    • @TheWizardOfWords
      @TheWizardOfWords  8 месяцев назад

      I wish you all the best, Mrcarvalho. I can't imagine the culture in which your breast cancer recovery would be cause for derision. I'm deeply sorry that you are having this experience.
