Dan, you the MAN!!! 👍
How to tell the difference between a friend or an enemy? A friend laughs when you laugh, cries when you cry. An enemy laughs when you cry, And is unhappy when your happy.
Sadly, sometimes a friend can slowly morph into an enemy.
My weird co worker lol. She doesnt like me for no reason… i find this so Unique about those people like how can you dislike someone u barley know 🤔
enemy laughs and cries with you, but then destroy something yours when you are not watching
Who am I?I hope I am a decent human being...
Absoultely.
As a society, we really need to teach this stuff in middle school and high school - wish I knew this sooner! thanks Dan!!
You are right,Alison! Many of us never hear this unless we specifically look for it.
Alison Antone this could have prevented a lot of bullying in middle school/high school kids!
I think even if this was thought some people would still not listen to it, and people who would listen to it are willing to search for it
I agree!
Chose to be kind, instead of being right. Excellent advice.
Oh man, this is so on point! Because I was powerless as a child,(for various reasons,) I kept choosing people in my life that magnified my self-perception of being weak and powerless. Now 15 years later, (I'm 52) and after therapy, I began to see who I was truly meant to be. People are drawn to and influenced by my positive energy. I've always been this way, I just focused in the wrong direction for a very long time. Now that I see that I am an empowered, inspiring person, I suddenly keep getting supervisors who try to belittle me or exert their won power over me. I guess they are my teachers to help me learn to actually believe what I see in myself. :)
Right on Angela; don't let anyone take your power from you!!
beautiful comment!
Thats amazing! Keep shining
Experience the same… i see it as a learning proces tô change my behavior and be more powerfull
Thank you Dan! During the pandemic, I've been working on myself. One big aspect of that is to not allow others be nasty and rude towards me. Recently, I was in a virtual meeting n I answered another mom's question on why I chose this school over that one. And one of the reasons was that because of my work schedule, it'll be difficult to drive my kids to and from school everyday. This mom got real snotty with me and said, "What do mean it'll be difficult? This is your kid and you have to commit!" I froze and thought, "Ok, what I've been learning is being tested right now." My mind was blank and so I just didn't say anything and focused on someone else. I never went back to talk to that mom. I was upset afterwards that I froze and didn't say something to shut this mom's rudeness towards me down. She kept trying to be rude towards me the whole meeting and all I could think to do was ignore her. Ugh
M, I think ignoring her is a perfectly fine way to handle such rudeness. And going blank is common for us all, which is why we all need communication PRACTICE--even if it is going over scenarios in our mind or in front of the mirror. If you deal with this mom again, remember that the "haves" and "shoulds" in your life are determined by YOU, not by anyone else. You determine how best to raise your child, and to what you should commit. A simple phrase that has served me well in the face of such comments is "Your comment was not helpful and your judgment isn't required." It's pretty straightforward and I use it only when a softer approach is falling on deaf ears. And always remember that it's not necessary to straighten out every rude mom you meet during the pandemic. If the words don't come, ignoring sends a strong message. There is too much "telling people off" in this day and age. Spotlighting their behavior or ignoring them are both good responses, in my opinion, to people such as the woman you described.
Silver lining. I grew up with alot of negative judgement...so much so that I really don't rise to the bait of mean people. My challenge is to respond in an effective way. I very often SEE THROUGH bad behavior. Doesn't mean I want it in my life... I am a LOVING person...but I've walked away from alot of relationships because I just didn't need the drama...
I'm with you, Deborah--including the growing up around a lot of negative judgment and learning how to deal with it--AND seeing through it to the core of the person, which is always love. Having said that, you certainly don't want unnecessary drama from those relationships that you choose (as opposed to relatives you can't choose!)
Effective Communication Skills With Dan O'Connor I have trouble seeing the love in some behaviour. But I do see how as you say that people will vent their insecurity on you when you inadvertently hit their triggers. Maybe I get some of the attention you were hoping for or I'm just a little too giddy while you're feeling like crap...you wanna slap me down or take my crown(...!?...) It's very clearly NOT about me...and trying to get along with such a person is a lost cause, because they feel powerful by withholding approval.
There are people like that, and sometimes you just have to walk away. It's difficult in a business environment when you don't want to quit your job (which is sometimes an option) but you don't want to be disrespected, either. That's one situation where effective communication tactics can be helpful.
I can relate.
Dan O'Connor is a genius. Thank you sir for taking your time to impart this knowledge on others. I feel empowered.
I don't know about the genius part, unless you believe my parents. :) But I feel blessed and grateful that my videos help you to feel empowered.
Dan
Agreed! These videos are life changing
52 years old, and I finally understand. Thanks 😊
I'm watching this at work 😎 Coz this is the area of my life that I need help in the most 🙏🏼
I’m confident that I’m:
- warm
- loving
- generous
- encouraging
- wise, insightful
And I am becoming more
- effective
- responsible
- organized
- mature
- skilled
- wealthy
Yeah, Baby! Let’s get on this.
Cheers!
My current initial reactions to frustrating circumstances or people can be:
- snarky
- snide
- sarcastic
- loud
- cruel
- obnoxious
- distracting
- mean spirited
- cussy
But that never helps, so today I am changing that to:
- quiet
- reflective
- calm
- soothing
- peaceful
- sensitive to others
- graceful
- kind
I tend to mirror tones that come my way, especially negative ones - not meant to be awful as they come across but rather to show the difficult person what it’s like to relieve that - but that only adds to or extends the friction. I can change. Today, I am changing. By being more conscientious, I can set a better example for myself if no one else.
OK, CHEERS, BABY!
GOOD FOR YOU that you recognize you have work to do on yourself. We all have work to do on ourselves, and those who don't recognize that are generally those who need the most work :)
I am Virginia, and I aim to be honest, kind, and encouraging.
I am kind ,caring and giving also patience is my downfall sometimes well most of the time !
Hi Dan, thank you for sharing your thoughts. For the concept of hurt people hurt people, I respectfully disagree. There are people who aren't embarrassed or feel less than, yet are simply cold to another. I don't think it's always hurt people that hurt people. Just my take on it. Thank you for your invaluable info.⭐
I agree. Some hurt people have empathy, and would be mortified if they carelessly hurt someone else, let alone intentionally as so many a-holes do. Wounded or not. "Hit and run" is gonna kill or cause damage, even if it's an accident
I am kind, generous, and outgoing
You are!!
Every manager ,owner , delegation teams needs to watch this video
Three things, Leatherneck Sears 1. Did you subscribe to my channel? 2. My father was a Marine in Viet Nam--just fyi :) And #3--thank you for your comments and your suggestion to managers, owners, and delegation teams. Now if you'd just share this video with every manager, owner and delegation team people you know---I'd say THANK YOU AND SEMPER FI!
Yes sir. I added you! great advice. Now if I was to send this to my Managers. OH MAN. I would get all kinds of mud kicked up.I work in a environment where they are about being lyrical ninjas .I'm a hospice nurse and surrounded by women... ITS a good thing if it was a club or a bar. but work. OMG. I've practiced when sitting in meetings toe close tip my fingers pointer finger to thumbs and cross my legs under the table at the ankles. helps keep your flow of energy fro leaking.Tell you dad I said Semper fi . Old Green!
Hahahaha, I appreciate your situation, Leatherneck. Yes, I'll say Semper Fi from you to my father, who is proud he was mean and ugly enough to be a Marine. He was in Europe with my mother once and embarrassed her by going up to some young man with short short hair, who appeared to be resting on a military bag of some kind. My father approached the young man and said: "You look mean and ugly enough to be a Marine." My mother damn near died of embarrassment until the young man looked up, grinned and said "You're right and THANK YOU SIR!" Marines--ya gotta love 'em.
You are such a genius, and my hero thank you!!
Dan, it is so powerful how you’ve blended spiritual concepts with practical ways to communicate. It has helped your message and methods stick even more in my brain as I learn new ways of communicating. Thank you, dearly!
I love your advice, but every once in a while, I have to give that snarky remark back at a negative person. Otherwise I am a strong, compassionate, decent loving person. I don't ever call anyone names but I do point out their negativity.
You are so right Alison. Now a days choose your battles with folks. Kindness sucks cause it's looked at as weak. How immature is that!
You are a communication king. Thank you🙏🏽
You are so welcome
Caring, empathetic and direct
This is the best advice I've received all year!
Great, Karen! I hope you subscribed, shared, and will continue to comment.
Dan
Karen Blanco I was just about to post exactly the same comment and saw your comment at the top of the pile. Must be a messagefrom the universe there. Thanks!
I cannot tell you how much this helps. It's absolute gold. You are generous with your time and your knowledge. Can't say thanks enough :)
Dan, please consider making a series for people with Asperger's Syndrome. Your guidance on reading and using body language would be especially helpful. Also, any hints on breaking repetitive thought processes would be great. Thanks. I love your series and now watch one every day.
Hi Susan: If you could tell me a bit more about the communication challenges of those with Asperger's Syndrome, I can perhaps do a few videos that would apply. I'd hesitate to call it a series for people with Asperger's Syndrome because I'm not qualified to do that. But if I know the issues, I can certainly do videos on those topics and then you can decide if they're helpful. Hows that??
Dan
Dan,
I'm no expert, however there are some problem areas of communication that many people with Asperger's share:
Non-verbal communications:
reading body language, or knowing how to use it effectively
Eye contact : avoiding direct eye contact
Conversations
Tend to have one-sided conversations, without recognizing it.
Literal interpretations, unable to pick up on nuances
Reading other people emotions conveyed through speech
Bullying: Asperger;'s kids and adults are bullied a lot. Any procedures for understanding when they are being bullied, and how to respond would be useful.
Dan, these are a few ideas. If you could team with someone who is knowledgeable and has the condition , I believe you could create a dynamite presentation that would encourage and benefit those who struggle with Asperger's. You could spread more light in the world!
Thanks for reading and responding to my suggestion.
Susan
Hi Susan:
Thanks for your detailed response. I'm giving this some serious thought. Again, I want to stay within my pay grade when I present lessons--but having said that, I will take a long hard look at this.
Dan
Dan, Thank you. I watched a friend who is on the spectrum get bullied at work. Her managers would not do anything, so she quit. That is the main reason I wrote to you. I know her story is magnified by thousands.
Thanks for writing and bringing this to my attention, Susan.
Very good. Thank a lot , Dan. I downloaded your books too. We need a positive attitude to deal with the world. We just lack skills and you here to help us. :)
You are the best thing that has happened to me this year. I've learned so much from your videos. Today I finally stood up to my co-workers and boss who expect that I drop my things to do theirs. I felt mortified while I was doing it and probably wasn't very composed, but I hope I get better and better as I practice your techniques. Thank you! you are the best.
Janmaris, practice really does make perfect and remember, you are after results, not popularity. If your boss and coworkers got the drift that you are not their doormat--THAT'S the result. If their reaction makes you uncomfortable at first, or if you feel awkward because you're in new communication territory, that's OK. Keep the result in mind--always--and you'll feel GREAT about yourself!
Dan I must say your videos arent mechanical rules they come from spiritual growth and a whole lot of reflection. Thank you for reminding me to always be my kind and considerate self even with rude people and just stick to facts and not take anything personal
Happy to remind you, others and of course myself :)
Dan I love your advice! I have a really unusual problem. my boss used to be my friend. now, for her, it is OK to have me do things that she won't ask anyone else to do. shit work. when I point out that I think that is unfair. " oh Angie will do it" she says it's because she expects more from me. when in reality she knows most of my co-workers will refuse to do it. she talks about me to other employees. I am partially deaf and she'll tell people that I don't pay attention!
Great advice. I hope I can master this technique when I encounter my next difficult person. I subscribed and look forward to many more of these.
This is helpful. Its worse when your own mother bad talks or treats bad. Im learning how to change my responses to her emotional abuse. Also when other people in my Life are being not nice.
This is uncanny. I literally wrote out the three adjectives a few days ago before I saw this video due to something else that I read. They are taped on my monitor. It is no surprise that I ended up here, looking for answers to handling toxic people in my life. Thank you!
Resilient, Courageous, Compassionate
Thank you so much for posting this video! I watched it on the Friday previous to this posting.
I immediately thought I am calm, patient, and loving. I am working on being more calm and patient. I only picked loving, because I'm an introvert.
On Sunday at work, I had to train a lot of new people. I must have had this in the back of my mind because a few people complimented me on my patience.
I thought I misheard them. You mean my impatientence? No your very patient. It melted my heart. No one ever complimented me on that ever in my life, ever lol. Even though my insides were all in chaos, I succeeded in not letting it show. Maybe an occasional slip here and there, but progress! New sub! Definitely going to buy the book!
Thank you! 🥰
You're welcome, Judith. I try to remember that each day gives us an opportunity to learn more, to practice more, and to do everything just a little better than the day before.
This are too many words for me to remember. I know sometimes I come out as rude but when some one attack me I can’t remember any of those words. I just tell them exactly what I think and I assume the consequences. Although English is my second language I try to keep short and understandable. I have notice in this country people beat around the bushes too much.
Thought I would love to have that many words and I totally love your videos and I will totally continue watching and learning. And I think this videos are absolutely amazing. Btw I am reading also your book and I love it.
I just have to say it again, “Who am I” is the best question ever!!!! Thank you!
That. Was beautiful. I’ve loved all the videos I’ve watched from you, and this one definitely has resonated the most for me. Thank you so much. Exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you for making it very clear on figuring out what exactly I need to work on for myself.
Love that you talk about difficult things in a fun way, not sad or slow or downbeat. Thank you. Your work is changing my life in some small, but very positive ways, that add up over time. I owe you a hug - but that might be inappropriate, so I’ll pass your work on to others I think could benefit instead and send you some warm high 10’s: 🙌
I'd take the hug gladly. I'll also take the sharing :) :)
Thanks Dan ,So glad to see new videos !! I needed a reboot .Your videos always help me communicate with my" adult learner "classroom bully.
You are fabulous! I love these videos ❣️
Glad you like them!
Excellent! I have been able to answer "who am I?", but I haven't taken that next step in saying - and how does that reflect in what I am about to say. 8:00 and forward really drove that home. THANK YOU!!
Dan you are amazing
I have come to watch again and again this video when i am losing it with myself when i go on difficult situation to communicate
Great--that's what it's there for, Helena.
Hello.i just have to say ty for these videos.Im in a difficult situation at work.im being bullied by my boss.she is intimidating, hostile, and manipulative. She has said discriminatory statements when she found out i am a lesbian.she follows me around. In private she acts aggressive and threatening towards me.in front of coworkers shes charming and appears helpful.Im afraid of retaliation if i complain.ive love my job.and other coworkers. Its just management thats the issue.theyre abusive to employees but everyones afraid to say something.
Excellent This is some of the best teaching I have ever had I do consider myself to be kind patient and compassionate that’s why like he said God led me to him my new master teacher
Your content is priceless.
Dan, you are the video / person that the universe that has conspired to bring forth at a time when I needed it and said.... I am more than a conquerer, I am kind, I am patience, I am forgiving. Thank for this great video. Learnt a lot from other videos too, though this is the first time I am writing in. Thank you.
I am flattered to be the first one to whom you wrote Lay San Ang and I sincerely thank you for writing. I see you've worked on your Personal Compass--and you'll be happy you did! A kind and patient warrior! Dan
3 adjectives for me are genuine, happy & fun ! Rolled right out of me instantly. Unfortunately- some folks need to think about it .
whoa that was seriously profound. "We have survived [the dinosaurs etc], now we need to evolve". YES YES YES!!
I’m so happy to find this for myself and others. I’ve had problems with response. Thank you for the info. I’m sharing this. I wish you all the success as it will come with opening the eyes of people who need these techniques. I’ve given and received disrespect( just a word, so tired of hearing how someone disrespected someone). I’ll be listening to your videos. Thanks again.
Wow what a eye opening message. Om Mani padme hum 🙏🙏🙏 shanti shanti shanti
It’s all about practicing what you believe you are and that is not always easy but it is a journey
Good job, Sir. What you are saying make a lot of sense. Thank you so much for leting me think about myself who I am and who I want to be! I got all what you mentioned yourself. My problem is I do not want to be door mat anymore for anybody. Because " I am hornorable."!!!
Hi Dan, I have found your words very powerful Who Are You. And I believe unless you truly know who you are is when you can move on to the next stages. I have played your first 3 Video's over and over until I have grasped the concept. There is a lot of years of old habits to unshackle. So now I know its all about me and not about them, I'm starting to relies I can deal with nasty back stabbing people in the work force.
Charmaine, I am happy and feel blessed to have helped you. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me.
Dan
Powerful stuff.
"Who are you?" Very powerful..
This message has come at the right time for me! This is perfect coaching material and I'm so glad I've come across this when I did. 😊
Wonderful! I'm happy it will be helpful to you, Georgie.
Bam! I am kind, loving , healthy individual. It’s an all day, everyday evolution and progress. 😎
Muze, I'm sure you're a wonderful, enlightened, mindful person. The world needs more just exactly like you. Clones, even.
Effective Communication Skills With Dan O'Connor Indeed! I am. 😌
So glad, wish I found this video in junior high or high school... lots & lots of rude ppl. Thank U so much, Dan♥️♥️🙏
I’m choosing to be kind
Patient & loving = amazing!! 😎♥️
Yes, we can always choose to be kind. Life is easier that way--for everyone. :)
Iam a compassionate , kind , and witty soul.
I am calm, friendly, and strong.
Substance of who I am manifesting in the form of my speech! Good phrase to remind myself.
:)
This is so wise.💕
the way we react on impulse is always the opposite of who we really are. To get a good sense of who you really are or who you were meant to be, consider what happens when you lose it. And recognize that you are the opposite of that
crazy genX I don't think it's about opposites. For example, when someone is crying for help, one person may become violent over their vulnerability, while others become withdrawn and will isolate. It's still a cry for love and help, but it looks differently.
There is only one healthy way to go about it, and that's being humble and honest about what you're truly feeling. I think we agree in that that's where our true selves can be found.
Thank you for the lesson Dan. You definitely have talent!
I so appreciate these videos and i keep them in my watch list to study and evolve. My oarents could not provide these insites to me as a child and its wild how we unconsciously carry certain attitudes throughout our adult lives.
Yes, we carry the tapes and frequently play the tapes. We all do, Arnold. It's something we recognize and try to overcome (or appreciate, depending on the tapes) our entire lives.
Hi Dan! Amazing video! My coworker insulted me by calling me a push over. Another one was calling me grandma cuz she's in her late twenties, and I'm in my late forties. She talked loudly about her grandma falling. I know she gossips with another girl her age. These women are toxic ghetto bullies and I want revenge. However, having a way to assert myself around them may help diffuse the hostility they have. Although, they act juvinile delinquents from a horror show. I was surprised that even people working in the medical field talk shit about their patients. Here in Texas, unfortunately, nursing home abuse is number one in the nation. People who prey on the elderly are so evil. I believe that they treat me like I'm a fossil, and it really aggravates me. For example, a used car salesman kept referring to how his dad bought a car. He looked around 30 years old. I wanted to ask him his age, but I didn't. He made such a big deal about mine. Here in Dallas, the people are rude, disrespectful and very judgemental. I want to move, cuz there's also tons of alcoholics and perverts.
Hi Dan, I realy want to thankyou,I'am following you for more than 2 years now, you're realy doing a great job, keep it up !!
Thanks again Dan definitely gives me something to think about always appreciate it
Hey Dan!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this video! so many good lessons!! Even had to share it on my Facebook :) watching it for the second time now

Great content! Your videos helped me to navigate a challenging experience I had a work while assissting me in establishing some excellent communication tools and a new perspective on "difficult" people. Thanks so much!
Wow, what a cool posting, thank you for this, I'll watch this at least 3 times(I'm a human I need help) lol, love your energy. p.s. I always feel more equipped to greet the day after watching one of your videos, thank you again.
I am a loving. Kind and a courteous person that's me
Thank you Dan .... so incredibly helpful
Great you just gave me my first man on the street interview question!
Do you have a video about sexual harassment? Dude said he was "enjoying the view" when I walked by. I normally appreciate being appreciated but this man seemed to want to take my power at that moment.
Why is he important? Do you see him every day? If not why is it important?
Love your message so much, thanks for sharing your insightful knowledge.
Amazing! This video really helped me alot.
I really needed this video! Toxic in laws, I’m about to get married, I can actually save my life with this content!!!!!!!!
Love you Dan ♥️😘♥️
Amazing and so helpful. Thank you.
Good stuff needed this. Thanks for putting it in perspective.
Ohhh! This is the BEST!
Dan, you have manifested right before me..thank you teacher!
Thank you so much. Will remember what you said here next week when I enter that Zoom meeting facing the dominating "Bermuda Triangle" at work.
Let me know how it goes, LuvHartSapin.
Omg! Thankyou for your videos! I NEED this information!
Love this ❤. Totally bingeing your awesome vids
I really enjoying listening you. How I can talk like you? You are superstar.
This is so helpful. Wish I knew this chanel before
On the question, who are you, I have four. Four areas in me that were wanting, allowing a nightmarish perception of the worst in people and the world, to filter in and be my 'reality'. Perception is important. It was time to give my ole subconscious suggestions to curb my anxiety, didn't want to back to panick attacks. I am peaceful. I am calm. My mind is free to be happy. I live without.
This was my mantra. If only one in ten of these repetitions drop to the subconscious, over a small amount of time, perception changes accordingly. Even if I felt stressed with apparent appropriate stimuli in sight, I would repeat these my mind til a sense of relief came over me. Sorry, just felt inspired to share that.
I live without *fear* [typos eh].
with*out* apparent appropriate stimuli...[jezz].
This is great on many levels. Thank you!!!!
Thanks for sharing this Dan! I found it interesting when you said "if someone is trying to .... it's because they feel (that way)". What about when someone talks down to you? I'm in a position right now where someone is downplaying my role and I thought it was because I don't have "director" in my title.
Stephanie, watch a few of my videos on the topic of condescending people, and let me know if you still have this question :) Just put "condescending people" in the search bar on my channel.
Thank u for these lessons! I'm having a tough time after losing a loved one and ur getting through somehow
I'm new to this, but most of us truly learn how to speak as kids, then our lexicon remains at a certain level, except for communication experts, teachers, wizards of words like yourself!
But it's precious to get to pick up on this and excel.
It hasn't been easy dealing with a situation of hatred and envy directed at my recent fight with breast cancer and the views on life that changed after that. People notice a change and tend to attack when they're feeling threatened, too bad somebody actually said things that really hits where it already hurts, nasty things about my health condition and recovery, and it's become a cycle. But that was the only way I could tell it wasn't just something that slipped.
It's especially harder when Cantonese is not my first nor second language, it's one that I learned by ear. My mother language is Portuguese, next comes English, so I've only got these 2 on my side when I'm shamed in front of a lot of people in Cantonese.
Thanks so much for all this! I believe the tone, the posture, how we sit, how we stand, we communicate with all of that!
I wish you all the best, Mrcarvalho. I can't imagine the culture in which your breast cancer recovery would be cause for derision. I'm deeply sorry that you are having this experience.
Love your channel! I wonder why you started to teach this in the first place? ❤
Wow I really needed this, thanks!
I love your statement, "I will rise above this battle field." I have always said, "I am a veteran of War And Love." Yes, written as War seems 2 always come first in interaction locally. I do love first and I am compassionate, But I am stressed and I am in limbo, so thank you for your lovely lesson. I feel better about humanity :}
I’m busy binging on these videos.
Good. Now go to my channel danoconnortraining.com and binge some more. I'll see you there.
Your helping me so much omg thank you 😢 ya to forget it as well its all in your head yep 😅
on point,we dnt knw peoples nw adayz
