Probably because no one wants to collect a hundred rocks for some event, especially if they have other things to worry about like grades or family. It’s not some extra credit assignment so it’s just more work and you don’t even get a choice if you want to be part of it or not. For most it just be a pain and a chore. Also it would just more stress on them since it is a big event, so most likely they’ll have to slave themselves to do it.
Also remember what Iida said about being the center of attention. People that are shy, bad at socializing, have anxiety, or hate being in the spotlight will be forced to be the center of attention. This puts a lot of pressure and stress on students. I would probably hate this event too.

As it has many of these negative moments it makes the story a dark story. However that's just how I see the movie.

The characters talk all with the MC in the game and yes in this video they talk with us sometimes and us too (the MC is referred by the name Yuu here). The MC is gender neutral in the game so we can choose the gender ;) I hope I helped you x)
