    Order a replacement pin from edson, then have a machine shop drill a couple of holes in it, one part way through lengthwise and 2 that intersect that hole crosswise at 45 degrees to the retaining pin and 90 degrees to the loaded axis. Then tap the end for a fitting and extension tube to bring a grease zerk out to an easy place to get to. That way you can just apply some grease once a month with a grease gun without needing to crawl into the hole. Do the same with the more open ones as well. Or replace the sheaves with ones that have actual sealed bearings in them and keep one spare on board.

      This comments needs upvotes. The "Bury the equipment someplace unreachable and write in the manual that it needs monthly servicing" design is nonsense of the highest order.

    • @pbcanal1
      @pbcanal1 3 года назад +6

      Great idea. Our heavy equipment is loaded with grease extensions to make it easy to maintain these parts. Especially something that gets as much movement as this steering pulley. I can understand the not wanting to use bearings as they might be difficult to find, but this dry system is nutty.

      That's a big ask for such a small island in the middle of nowhere! :)
      Remember, it takes a month or more for anything to get here, then trying to locate a professional to machine parts is an entirely different story.

    • @Blazer02LS
      @Blazer02LS 3 года назад

      @@gonewiththewynns Not really, You could have it done and waiting at the next port of call and just use the one you have until then. As for the machine work, it would only take someone with a drill press or small mill to do the job. The hardest part would be laying out the holes. I'm surprised they don't make a pin that way already given that the sheaves have to be lubricated so often.

    All engine manufactures say to change the oil after the engine has been warmed up . I know it's somewhat of a pain but the oil will pump out easier and running the engine stirs up the oil so that the dirt that has settled out will be pumped out . It's not the end of the world that you did it cold, but do it warmed up in the future . The steering pully shafts should be lubed in place in future with engine oil - the spray oils give rapid results but do not last long as they are so thin . You guys are GREAT workers and take great care of your boat ,really nice to see . Will be great to see you back in the water Best of luck

    Can I make a recommendation? I got this from an old VW guy and it’s been very helpful for me. Every time you do a project, make a note of the sizes of fasteners you have on your vessel. Use that information to build a custom tool kit for your boat. A 17mm box wrench would be very useful to have. Keep on keeping on.

    Those fat and ripe bananas (actually a kind of plantain) that you were prepping when green, make the best patacones or where I’m from, tostones. After you fry them the first time and smash them, pass them briefly through ice cold water where you have smashed a couple of garlic cloves and a fair Tbs. salt. then take them out of the water quickly, let them dry out and fry the second time. Scrumptious!! You can actually freeze the patacones after their first fry. Or you can just make them like chips sliced very (very) thin, but they must be very green, not ripe or they will burn.

    Nice work guys. So I have a suggestion. It's a little bit involved, but will save you a ton of headache in the future and prolong the life of your equipment. Next time you take out the steering pulleys you should take the pins to a machine shop and have them drill lubrication holes in them and tap the hole in the end of the pin to 1/8-27. Then you can add push to connect fitting on the pin, connect tubing to it and run it to a more accessible location, add a grease fitting to the end of the tubing and then can pump grease down to the pulley without climbing down and dismantling them.

      And I do not understand why they do not clean up the rust stains on the hull (the Wynns are not the only ones) - Barkeepers Friend (that's a product if you don't know) will do it very quickly and easily and it does not scour the surface. The nuts he is talking about are Lock Nuts - and Yes, they are one time only use.

    A little tip that makes changing oil a lot easier. Warming up the engine a bit makes the oil less viscous and it pumps out a lot easier.

    • @davep5788
      @davep5788 3 года назад +2

      True but those are water cooled engines so that may not be an option.

    • @michaelcaraway2305
      @michaelcaraway2305 3 года назад

      @@davep5788 True, however, just bringing the temperature up slightly will not harm the engine and allow the oil to become less viscous and easily pumped out. I'm not suggesting bringing it up to operating temperatures. It is something that is employed for diesel engines in colder climates with an electric oil heating system to make the oil easier for the engine itself to pump and lubricate on start up. Just heating up the oil slightly makes it less viscous.

      @@johnmartin3486 I was on an aircraft carrier. We had water tight hatches in pressure vessels that didn't leak in the 3 years I was on ship. Solid hatches can be made watertight where something like a deck hatch with a window in it will fail. Lube the seal and every few years replace the gasket. Is that easier than what they do now?

    When you replace a filter like that one on the engine oil, it is wise to prefill the filter with oil before you screw it on. This avoids any component running dry while the filter is filled when you first start up after an oil change.
    Looking good guys. See you in NZ when you arrive.
