This anime could have been called *_"The Detective Diaries."_* Whenever Maomao isn't curing the physically ill, she's essentially Professor Layton.
Chinese Professor Layton is something I didn't know I needed until I received it.
All Maomao needs now is a companion and some mad sword skills and she's all set! 👌
She is more like a mix of Gregory House and Sherlock Holmes as a teenage girl.

I honestly thought she was going to go crazy and try to attack Maomao for knowing too much. That's how intense this scene was to me.
I think she very much WAS considering that, until Maomao reminded how meaningless it would've been.
All those frame shots towards the butcher knife then towards Fengming definitelly hinted at what was (temporarily) going through her head.
Also, MaoMao predicted it may happen and went prepared.

Most other anime protagonist wish they were as careful and tactiful as Maomao. ("most", since there're obviously some protagonists who are even smarter than her)

She quite literally went detective mode in this episode 😭
Now I feel bad for Lishu. She is being constantly bullied by her ladies in waiting without her knowing and she was driven away from the person she admired the most. Also without knowing why.
Yeah, Lishu deserves better

The problem with lishu is mostly a unlucky star and a little part from herself, and the worst this is the beginning for her
lishu is an important character in this story.
Tragic really, she made and honest innocent mistake which weighted on her so much that she almost killed an innocent girl whom was like a daughter to her mistress. All due to her overwhelming loyalty and love towards her, she almost robbed Ah-Duo of her son and daughter. And ultimately died for it. The whole affair was pointless really, not like Ah-Duo would have hated her for a mistake.
Ah-Duo would have never thought to punish her for a honest mistake. Unfortunately her guilt drove her to commit something which wouldn’t go unpunished.

Even if she wouldn't punish her, she would never look at her the same ever again which was THE real punishment as far as Fengming was concerned. Losing the love of someone she devoted her life to was something that she didn't want to endure.

The one died isn't her real child. It was swapped. So... would she really not look at her the same? Not sure how much she really cares.

The scary thing is that until I saw this anime, I didn't know this either and I'm almost 22. And as soon as I told my mom this part of the plot, she told me that if she died today then I should live on with knowing this information.

@@zaknafein254It’s the microbes. Babies under the age of one year can’t digest them and can get Botulism.
@@zaknafein254 Honey usually has Clostridium botulinum bacteria in it, which causes infant botulism. The risk is primarily for small babies (6 months or younger) but pediatricians advise against honey before the 2nd birthday to give baby's immune system time to mature.
This cuts off the start of this where the old killer calls her father a quack so Mao mao throws that back in her face as the lie she used to cover up the babies deaths as her father the quack would of banned the face powder.
Gotta appreciate the work ethic. Lady offs one child and then thinks “Whelp, now they all must go.”

God damn Maomao, she gave every detail on the how, when, what and why questions. Not to mention having the balls to talk to the culprit in front of her without any security. Has she gone mad or planned this from the start.

Watch the episode, it's later shown that Maomao had wrapped around some oil cloth or whatever around her torso as protection, just in case Fengming went crazy and tried to stab her. Fortunatelly, that ended up not being necessary.

Fengming’s name sounds really similar to the word honey in Chinese, her whole character was basically written for the purpose of honey poisoning 😭
I believe Fengming comes from a family that has produced honey for generations if I remember right, so it's probably intentional.
@@primethread Yeah exactly like all the English names of Smith, Carpenter, Gardner, Miller, Brewer, etc.
The thing is, honey is used as a natural cure. It does have sime medicinal qualities and it was used as a rather effective medicine for centuries before better were developed. I can see how someome might think that it would be good to give to infants.
But it is, in fact, quite deadly to babies
Yeah, if I remember correctly it also has to do with a type of bacteria in honey.

Shows how much Maomao thought ahead and prepared beforehand, even if it (gladly) ended up not necessary.
At least she prepared for slashes but definitely not her best idea.
This was so intense. The shows ability to go from loony tunes to dead serious is refreshing.
the real scandal though is kinda weird. You'd think that the Empress's child would be protected like no tomorrow but somehow they go swapped.
This might be spoilers, but...
From what I understand, Ah-Duo and the Former Empress Consort agreed to swap because Ah-Duo wanted to protect her son and get him better treatment, while the Former Empress Consort, due to the traumatic nature of her relationship with the Former Emperor, was emotionally detached from her second baby with him because of her trauma, but she did still care about her grandson, Jinshi. Raising her grandson so he would get the priority care he would not have had as he was the son of the then Crown Prince, in the stead of her actual son was also probably a nice form of payback to the Former Emperor in her mind, while also securing her first son's lineage in case anything happened. As an example, they did mention that current Emperor had had many kids with concubines before, but Princess Lingli is the first one of his known kids to survive to toddlerhood because of Maomao's intervention.
If Maomao hadn't been kidnapped, the poison makeup would not have been discovered and the lineage of the Emperor would still be at severe risk for high infant death. If none of his male siblings survived to adulthood, Jinshi would still inherit the right to rule since he's the Imperial Brother, but if they had to ensure the lineage of the current Emperor was going to continue for some reason, Jinshi's actual parentage as the firstborn son of the current Emperor could be revealed, thereby ensuring his birthright as the actual Crown Prince.
While it's sad the real Imperial Brother died due to accidental poisoning, the agreement to a swap was the best outcome for both babies. The Imperial Brother, had he not been swapped, would've been at risk of the Former Empress Consort letting him die out of neglect OR taking out her feelings about what the Former Emperor did to her on her son. By swapping, Jinshi was insured to live and be well cared for which is what Ah-Duo wanted, while the Imperial Brother, if he had not died as a baby, would've been raised by Ah-Duo, who could provide the love and care for him that his actual mother could not.

You can tell that the baby isn’t the same baby Lady Ah-Duo gave birth to. Ah-Duo’s baby had hair the same color as hers: purple/violet. Whereas the baby that Fengming is feeding the honey to, has black hair.
The former emperor’s hair color was black.

So, wait a minute, if that's true then then Fengming swapped the babies and the Empress is raising Ah-Duo's baby without either realizing it to become the next emperor? Huo lee s******! She's still the only one that knows (that we know of), will take this secret with her to the grave, which will technically make sure all her lady's pain and suffering not completely be for nothing, but still dang!

Well she was the consort to the previous emperor who liked little girls……, after that emperor passed away, she became the next emperor consort but he chose not to touch her for being too young.

Notice how at 0:27 and 1:30, the head maid's expression is emotionless, hollow and cold - like a death mask. It really helps to sell you the fact that she's the killer, while also adding an aura of creepiness to the scene.
Also, note how the shot is angled so that the cleaver behind her is just within reach. As if she plans to use it.
I just watched this episode a couple days ago, and there were several moments that made me have to pause and babble in admiration. The use of light and shadow, the expression or lack of same on the head maid's face and the dull flat look in her eyes, the camera angles...there's a shot done from directly overhead, showing the round table on the square patterned carpet and rotating slowly, that gave my stomach an uncomfortable sensation like I was about to fall down a hole. The cinematography is exceptional.
It's too bad this channel will probably not upload Fengming's confession and breakdown.
For all her faults, I really felt bad for her and the gut-wrenching guilt that was crushing her. 😕
Too bad it was far too late for any redemption.
The most Fengming could do was follow Maomao' instructions so she could lessen the emotional burden that her own execution would have on Lady Ah-Duo. _(though it's possible she had already figured it out)_
Given what Lady Ah-Dou says during this episode, she probably knows.
She was so loyal to her lady but she didn't know her lady at all. Ah-Duo probably wouldn't have severely punished her for her mistake since she didn't know she caused (bets are off for the emperor though)
She would have at least been dismissed without references, which would likely result in her being homeless
I don't know. Her family were famous apiaries, so it have been assumed she should have known and therefore have been punished like Dr. Luomen.

Its true children under 1 year should not eat honey, I know people who even asked their doctor for a spacific date so they know when its safe, and can put honey in teas and stuff for when their kids get sick
Mao mao was being very reckless this episode, why did she confront a known killer alone?
Because she had a small amount of empathy and wanted to give Fengming by combining two motives to one, which also supports the consort who had nothing to do with this behind the scenes backstabbing.
The end of the ep shows that she knows it was dangerous since she wrapped herself up tight in oiled paper to add layers that a knife would have trouble going through.
You’re assuming someone of her intelligence went in without a plan or defense beforehand.

When an honest prank accidently saves your life. Now I know another reason she was trembling of dread.
Besides the possibility of being framed as the poisoner, Lishu's lady-in-waiting was probably thinking _"if I hadn't pulled this swap on a whim, I might be dead by now!"_ So yeah, unintentional as it was, that -former- bully ended up saving herself and her mistress from Fengming's shenaningans.

This looks epic
As horrifying as the head maid ended up being you have to feel for her having to cope with unintentionally killing her Mistress's (only) child. She couldn't have possibly known and it is such a small thing no one would consider being harmful to babies which is why the act went uncontested at the time and undiscovered until later on. Given her position even if her Mistress was chill about it if anyone found out the emperors child was killed by a lady in waiting it would be the end for her and since the Concubine also couldn't get pregnant again would be the nail in the coffin in most circumstances. Really messy situation but at least she got to die content that her Mistress never learned of her blunder.
