- This is the perfect chess opening. A defense you can play against any starting move by White. It doesn't matter if they play e4, d4, Nf3 or c4, we always go for the same system. It will have different names, but it's essentially the same opening with the same patterns and ideas.
If you want an easy way to learn openings, visit chessbook here: chessbook.com/...
Chessbook allows you to import and practice your repertoire. It focuses on moves people actually play as well as your mistakes. Connect it to your lichess or chess com accounts to correct the biggest gaps in your repertoire!
When you learn an opening, the most important thing is to know the middlegame plans and patterns. That way you won't waste time and you'll know what to do in most positions. To do that, you have to do much more than just study opening theory. You have to study maaaany games. Just go to chessgames and filter by opening and start. If you analyze 50 games in a single opening, you'll understand it! It's that simple!

Stjepan and hating on French coffee, name a more iconic duo 🤣
Yeah... French coffee is an inexplicable phenomenon. Everything else tastes great there.

The most likely cause of the bad coffee is that because you were traveling the coffee in your home aged and became stale. Try grinding if you don’t, and use freshly roasted beans.
It may be so, but I doubt it. Thanks though.
If an espresso machine starts to produce worse tasting coffee from the exact same beans and the exact same grind consistency you normally use, it's usually a problem with pressure. The machine isn't reaching the correct pressure or holding the correct pressure long enough to extract in the desired way. There are several reasons this can happen.
Hmm. Ok. I will find out how to figure out if that's the case. And how to fix it if it is so. Thank you.
Change the water filter & clean it .
Depends on the model of coffee machine. If we are talking about the most famous brand (as my gf has), a deep clean with apple vinegar will do the job. Usually, the mechanical parts get covered by a shard of limestone which alters the taste of the coffee itself.
I would suggest using a nice Italian moka and the problem will fade away. In the alternative, a semi-professional coffee machine could suit you.
A moka results in too watered coffee. It's not near espresso. I'll try cleaning with vinegar. thanks!
I was just gonna talk about descaling the machine (running the descale program with a cleaning solution to remove residue and metallic accumulations in the machine). Now vinegar does work indeed but I would advise you use the standard descaling solution (it's cheap and easy to get online) for warranty purposes.
You would be +200 points higher if you just keep playing closed positions and just mastering the end games. You are assuming that you could've seen the tactics shown by the engine but in reality it's not always the case. You wouldn't be maintaining a good position because you have to be accurate all the time. Our brain is so limited in making accurate calculations for so long. In this rating range, everyone makes bad moves. It's just a battle of who can punish one another.
In closed positions, you can free your brain in calculating so many critical positions therefore having a 90% accuracy games.
I'm in 2200 -2300 rating as well and i hope this comment helps you in improving
I wrote a coffee poem a few years ago, and want to share it with you.
First thing in the morning, before even food
you need this dark liquid to fix your bad mood.
The french-roasted beans, fair-trade of course!
The 9 dollars spent with zero remorse.
Only the gauche would add sugar or cream
because you use an artisanal pour-over scheme.
The chem-ex, of course, should be taken to task
for being an overpriced erlenmeyer flask.
But resolute focus on repeatable grinds
continues to prove that you've all lost your minds!
Because dialing in coarseness and brew-time adjusting
simply can't change that this drink is disgusting!
An uncommon notion, I'd like to assert
is that coffee is just: acidic wet dirt.
Also, great game and I LOVE your channel. I've learned sooooo much from watching you. Keep it up!
Nice!
Hi Stjepan! Tomorrow's my first ever tournament, I've been preparing for months with your videos about openings, middlegame and endgame ideas. I feel like I've improved exponentially thanks to you! Just wanted to say a quick thank you, and I'll definitely get you your share of the prize money if I win :D
Good luck mate! Just take your time, do blunder checks, and walk around a bit during your opponent's moves. It will take some of the stress away.
How did it go?
@@ИвайлоКачаков Pretty good I'd say! Won 2 games, lost 1, and drew the last one from a dead lost position. Most participants were club players and have been playing for much longer than me, so I'd consider that a win
The setup your opponent played is really interesting. I've seen similar setups but with different move orders (1.Nf3 d5 2.e3 Nf6 3.c4) referred to as Keymer Variation of the Reti. Would be great if you could do a video about it if you have any more insights into this setup.
Great game and great to see some training games again.
Yeah. This is the most annoying setup to face when you start with 1...c6. There isn't much to be said other that what I said in the video. You have to play b6 c5 or e5 or you're much worse. usually they don't play g4 though.
Your coffee beans have oxidized meaning the oils in your coffee has gone rancid. Coffee oils oxidize relatively fast compared to other foods. I usually try to use beans roasted around 1.5 weeks to 4 weeks prior to the date I’m making my espresso. Beyond this you may need to use a descaling cleaner on your machine and I would also check the quality of the water you are using because that can matter.
Oh. Really? That oxidize that quickly? I have a small roasters close by and I'll make sure to buy freshly roasted coffee each week now. Thanks! Aout the water, I think our tap water is excellent.
@@HangingPawns life is too short for bad coffee.
one defense find them, one defense to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
About coffee: it's good to have some device to use for the reference (for example Phin could be really good). If You're using coffee You know, It can show is it your taste has to be recalibrated or is there some issue with the machine (regulation, very often cleaning the grinder).
After my third coffee machine dying I switched to an aeropress (long black) which was good. However, for the last few years the v60 pour over is my daily driver. I use a porlex mini hand grinder. Great coffee!
Uff. That's not an option for me. American coffee or anything watered down is a nightmare to me.
@@HangingPawns Try it in a good cafe one day. You might be surprised. It's not close to an Americano. You choose how much water to pour over.
A good way to meet this system with black is to delay the development oh the b Knight, to go to a6 if Rg2 is played (leave the d7 square for the other knight + threaten Nb4 in some positions + the knight is useful on c7 protecting d5 allowing e5). It's a recommendation of Sma Shankland
Interesting. I'll have a look into that.
I feel like the Semi-Slav and Caro-Kann are wholly different openings, besides black putting pieces on roughly the same squares and having a similar structure.
CK fights the e4 pawn early and forces it to either be pushed or taken, whereas in the Semi-Slav your d pawn can be attacked by the white c pawn and e4 comes later with more fight and central control. CK fights for the center and SS usually gives it up for a queenside attack.
They just aren’t the same opening in my opinion and learning one won’t help you with the other. Being good at one and enjoying it also doesn’t mean being good at and enjoying the other.
Edit: They’re still both great openings and if you happen to play both, good for you!
Are you sure your coffee hasn’t gone stale?
Nope. I made it 5 minutes before the game.
He means the beans going stale in the bag - could leave a bad taste :) Thank you for great content
@@marcurius5749 oh! That may be the case! I'll try with a new batch. Thanks
Hey! You should try getting a moka pot and making what is called Cafe Cubano, if you make it right, it's heavenly...Use Cafe Bustelo for the most traditional.

If you get a broad enough repertoire then it will be extremely hard to be prepared against though I requires a lot of work for sure.
I have a delonghi magnifica and it’s fantastic, but sometimes it needs to be descaled. There are instructions online and it’s easy
Actually there’s also a dial on mine, maybe someone turned it while you were away?
Yeah. I will definitely do that. I've had mine for 2 years now and never did that before.
I used to play c6 against everything. It works well. Eric Hansen did a speedrun a while back where he advocated the same idea.
Hello Stepjan. Im an Argentinean viewer and love the channel. I starte studying to enter tournaments recently. A friend who plays several tournaments told me that since I play the caro kann to try with the catalan as white because of the positional take on it. Would you recommend it? I like slow and intricated positions and absolutely hate e4! Big hugs!

Italian MOKa for Italian Espresso!!!! Ciao.
Moka is not espresso. Different thickness, richness and taste. Not even close. I have a moka for emergencies:D
Maybe your beans got old while you were away?
What a badass thumbnail tho
According to IM Cummings in his book on the English White's best is 6.Qc2. I have a feeling White was following the repertoire of the book and tried to remember the nuances.
According to that book 5...Bd6 is more accurate because of 5...Nbd7 ... 6.Qc2 Bd6 7.Bb2 O-O 8.Rg1!
Your 7...Qe7, postponing castling, is not in that book. I suspect that instead of 9.Rg1 White's best would have been 9.O-O or 9.d4, heading for a favourable version of the 6.Qc2 Meran.
Well, if we do transpose to the Anti-meran with 0-0 or d4, Qe7 is a useful move. It prepares e5.
Sure, but ...a6 not always.
Great game! Kinda funny you missed Ra2# but hey I never would have played the actual game as well as you
Nice game!
Nice job 👍
Feel like I should look at the Slav.
To my unlearned eye it seems like the Caro-Khan but perhaps protects better against low level dive bombing bishops.
You should.
The issue might be with your grinder. I have a Barazza grinder that has a burr collar that’s designed to break instead of seizing up the machine when there’s an under roasted bean, etc. You may not be getting as fine a grind as you think you are.
Also, the Caro into Semi-Slav is a favorite defense of mine. I’m only ~500 elo, so at my level it’s damn near uncrackable.
Hmm. I actually use a small grinder I think originally designed for seeds and stuff. I'm not sure. I'll check it out.
Thank god you didn't play Nf2 at 33:00 Qh2+ just takes it for free. Or your opponent for checking first

Thank you:)
English system players hate this setup. they don't want to play the Catalan or they would have played it in the first place.
what"s the opening system???
Could you a video on Caruana's Kan games?
Hmm. perhaps
Maybe needs to be decalcified, or maybe the quality of the water changed
3:19 I feel you xd that's one of the reasons I don't like carioca either
@ 24:00 What about Ba3 Nxc6 Bxb2+ Kxb2 bxc6 Qxc6+ with a draw? Or do I miss something?
Are you using the same coffee, amount, ground to the same size and everything else? It could be that water is channeling trough coffee puck and not going evenly, that can make it more watery IME.
That's possible. Everything is literally the same. Why would it start channel differently though? Could it be lime scale built up?
@@HangingPawns does machine have pressure gauge? If so you should be aiming for around 9 bars. Getting that nice crema in espresso is usual about having tamped down puck, getting good pressure and avoiding water channeling trough coffee.
Some internal buildup could affect pressure, making it not right , but I'm no expert so can't say for sure, just a fellow espresso enjoyer
I know a ridiculous amount about machines. Are you looking to upgrade?
Not really if I can get this one to produce great coffee again. i will try all the tips I got here first. If nothing works, then yeah, I will probably have to invest into a new one. Got a recommendation for something good and affordable?
@@HangingPawns Absolutely. Your goal is espresso or coffee? And give me a ballpark and I’ll have a couple recommendations and lay out pros/cons of each. I’m a bit of a coffee nerd.
@@elliotendures Thank you in advance!! My goal is espresso. Ristretto really. As per price, the one I have was about 300 euro. Something is that range seems reasonable for a machine ill be using several times a day for years. But if there's something vastly superior for a higher price let me know and I'll start saving money:D
@@HangingPawns OK! So, first off, if you want to do some research, first off, James Hoffman and Lance Kendrick are the best on RUclips, so check them out as needed. And price is always relative. Machines can get well over $10,000.
OK, so three options that jump out immediately.
1. Breville Bambino or Bambino Plus (biggest difference may be milk if that's a factor for you) is something to look at. Stable temperature. 54mm portafilter offers easy accessories.
2. I'd also consider the Gaggia Classic if you're open to a little modification to really make it a lot stronger of a machine. It's solid as is, but for very little money can be taken to the next level and make it feel like closer to a $1k machine. All that work is easy to find on RUclips and there's a big community that does that.
3. Lastly, if you're open to levers, the Flair is absolutely worth looking at and would probably be the strongest pure coffee maker. Levers aren't for everyone, but they are a lot of fun and produce high-quality coffee for a very reasonable price point.
@@HangingPawns OK, I thought I wrote this, but may not have hit enter. Anyway... three things come to mind. Feel free to do your own looking around on these. James Hoffman and Lance Hendrick are the two best coffee RUclipsrs and you can generally take their reviews and guidance as correct.
- Breville Bambino/Bambino Plus. I believe the main difference is steaming quality if you're a milk-drink person (I am not), but I'd confirm. This has good temperature stability and makes solid espresso. The 54mm portafilter is also a relatively common size, so getting accessories will be easy.
- Gaggia Classic. Truly a classic. It can be made even more excellent with some small modifications that are very popular and incredibly cheap. Search RUclips for instructions, but will make the machine operate at closer to $1,000 value. It's not the prettiest machine, but it's a standard and probably one of the most popular machines at sub-$1k despite being around your price range.
- IF and only if you're open to using a lever machine, the Flair stuff is quality. From a coffee perspective solely, you will get about as good of espresso out of that as any machine on the market at three or four times its cost. There are some hurdles, of course. First off, it's a lever. I LOVE the ceremony and tactile feel of lever machines, but some people just find it to be extra work. You sorta have to love the process. And secondly, since it doesn't have a boiler, you would need a kettle (preferably electric with temperature control so you don't burn the coffee with too hot water) and add water separately. Tons of videos about this little guy. No milk frothing, but not sure if that matters at all.
From a pure coffee quality perspective, assuming you get into it and develop a good process, the Flair will produce the best by a VERY large margin. It's drawback is simply the longer and more complex workflow, as well as the water thing, though decent electric kettles can be had very cheap.
Of course, I am assuming you have quality coffee that's not too far away from roast and are grinding fresh (if possible) as that will be the biggest difference in coffee quality. The nerd wisdom is that 75%-ish of your budget should be on the grinder. It's monumentally more important than the machine.
To summarize:
- If open to lever workflow, it's a no brainer.
- If don't want lever, but open to some small tinkering, Gaggia.
- If you want the easiest out of the box experience where you turn it on and it's very simple, the Breville.
Ask any questions.
Hey Stjepan, English teacher from the States here. I know English isn't your first language, and this concept isn't too common, but in English we have something called the Singular They. It's a way for you to talk about your opponent in a gender neutral way if you don't know if they are a man or a woman. An example could be something like, "For some reason my opponent spent 5 minutes with Bb2, I don't know what They are doing." If youre worried about that type of thing. Great game by the way!

After white's Qc2 on move 7, Stjepan said that if he (Stjepan) castled at that time, which might choose to play g4. If he meant white would play g4 right away, that appears to be a mistake. Black just plays Nxg4, and after Rg1, black can either withdraw his knight to f6 or to e5 or defend it with f5. Either way, it is good for black. When he first discussed g4, I did look at the possibility of Rg1 to back up the pawn, and white did wind up playing that on move 9. I think Stjepan should have played h5 at that point to prevent g4, especially since he said he was not planning on castling.
The sequence he discusses before playing 7... Qe7 also seems to be off. After 7... Qe7 8.Be2 e5 9.cxd5, black should play Nxd5 instead of cxd5, and he should be fine. The pawn on c6 still keeps the black knight at bay.
Sir iam your great fan it really helped me in opening . Which country are you from sir, I’m from pakistan - China neiborhood
Hi Stjepan, have you tried setting the grind size a bit finer or getting a new bag of freshly roasted coffee? The older your coffee gets the more CO2 it has lost and the espresso shots will go faster when staying at the same grind setting which could then taste watery. I usually need to gradually adjust my grind setting finer with the same bag of coffee quite a bit over the span of a month. Not sure if this is the problem you're having but seems likely if everything else stayed the same.. Cheers, love your content and keep up the good chess
Croatian water is very mineral rich, could be calcification.
Could also be coffee that was ground too long ago, or, could be some grand conspiracy to start lowering the quality of Croatian coffee.
maybe clean the machine by running it with vinegar, then run it like 3 times with water to flush vinegar out
I have a Delonghi. Are you using very fine grounds and tamping them down before pulling your shot? That really improved my espresso shots.
I am.

You mentioned Nf2 as a possibility after the very strong move Ne4! but that would be a mistake because White would pick up the piece with a Queen check
I also employed that universal setup wirh c6 d5, but as ive played more games with it, the fact that white has a lot of systems where they can go for a minimal edge wirhout risk made it more and more unappealing for me, until i decided to go back to c4 e5.
