word, like... the game NEEDS some sort of endgame or purpose. like dude... I was just playing this classic on ps2 called star ocean till the end of time, and the game broke the 4th wall with a creator type villian being a boss and calling the main characters just data. Like... Its cheesy but my 32 year old brain loved it. the voice acting tried to be serious too. Like wtf happened to games... Edit: If you play it, it's GRINDY asf but the story kept me engaged lol, story telling is just as important to fuel purpose to gameplay.

You could be gay in Dragon Age Origins back in 2009 and nobody batted an eye. That was because it was just "there", it wasn't slapping you in the face.

If it's not overt and in your face nobody minds it, i have no issue if people wanna play a gay character in an RPG that's perfectly fine, just don't keep shoving it in my face, using terms like "trans" in a fantasy RPG just teleports you right back to modern day real world, it completely ruins the immersion along with all the millenial speak. The issue with Veilguard isn't even just the LGBT stuff it's also the way the characters talk like modern millennial californians, it's just jarring and immersion wrecking stuff throughout the entire game, i can't even take it seriously for a second, you see the fantasy character but you hear the voice actor, you know what i mean?
Thats what i kept saying for years now. If you just add it naturally nobody will complain. Focus on the story and make it good. That's how we already had many cool characters of diffrent ethnicities, genders, sexualities, backgrounds and designs. And even more modern games like AC Odyssey managed to give you free romance options without forcing or implying anything. It was not story relevant, but the player had options. That was true RPG. You make the call, not the developer. No ideology forced on you. And having the option hurt nobody. It only gave everyone the option to shape their gameplay how they preffered. Including denying every romance.

I've said it before and I'll say it again here: A medieval fantasy game with elves, dwarves and other creatures won't be using modern era Western terminology. Anytime it's used in a video game it will tear the player right out of their suspension of disbelief.

@@Argonegone01 Yeah, it's crazy. Even the Wiki is extremely biased and inaccurate. What truly happened was that one of the people that got mentioned was Zoe Quinn, because there was a lot of evidence of how shady she was. Some people started "trolling" her and she then did this magician's trick of hand-waving about sexism so people wouldn't pay attention to the true issues that gamers were trying to discuss. Many journalists saw how effective this trick was and started lying about the situation and some attention hungry people got on the bandwagon and we've been in this mess ever since.
I think no matter where you stand on the real life issues, you should be able to look at veil guard’s childish, dumbed down, educational video-esque dialogue. The “coming” out scene, like something out of a poorly written YA novel, and say “this isn’t what we play video games for”. Some of these scenes are some outright Dora the explorer level “do you see swiper?” “Swiped no misgendering” type of content. No one fires up a “fantasy adventure” to get a 10 minute lecture about what being non-binary is and why it’s important. Trying to turn a recreational source of entertainment into a propaganda platform for “correct” education, and dumbing the writing down until it’s a 4kids anime… is not what people enjoy. Just let people have their escapism and fun. Humans like heroes, big tits, explosions and stoic muscle men, just let fantasy… be FANTASY. Pretty simple

I remember 10 or so years ago when I was happy how popular gaming was getting. People of all walks of life were welcome. Little did I know a group of them will make a platform out of it and I’ll yearn for when it was just a hobby “for nerds”…

We're arguably in one of the greatest periods of gaming. Triple AAA studios are producing a lot of slop, but everybody else is pumping out a lot of diamonds. Look at last year, for instance. We had a ton of very popular, well produced games in virtually every genre. If BG3 wasn't released last year, so many games would have won awards. But due to AAA gaming stumbling, and because there's just SO many games out nowadays, it can make it seem like we're in a downslide.

This is the problem with the whole entertainment industry. They have forgotten that their job is to entertain, not push an agenda. That's why I stopped watching anything new and I am hesitant to get a new game. I don't want to pay for propaganda. I want to escape reality and rest from the world for a while.

I have found it's almost never the actual body type choosing model that's makes the game bad, it's always with games that are so focused on pushing an agenda that they forget to make a good game. If they actually just made a good game and put the body type 1-3 over Male and Female, I highly doubt people would give a shit. They'd be too busy just playing the game.
Been gaming for almost 40 years. I've reached the point where I don't get hyped for anything, anymore. If a game I'm interested in comes out, I simply wait for user reviews and sometimes even watch play throughs to ensure the game is what I hope and I'm not accidentally giving money to people who hate me. You would have to be a complete moron to get hyped or pre-order, nowadays.
Same for me. There are so many great older games that go on sale constantly for 50% off (or more) that I can't justify to myself to get caught in the hype train. Some games still have beta's and I'll play that if I'm interested to make my own judgement but for the rest I can just wait a year for a summer sale to pick it up. Just play indie games or older classics until reviews and/or sales show.
Unless it is a game from a company I know will at least have a good game, regardless of its pricing policies (Atlus), I do the same as you. Wait for reviews. See if it actually is worth it.
That's exactly true. Last hype was cyberpunk. I never buy pre release reviews. Many games are crap and the only ones I'd believe to be able to keep, at least for now, it's Rockstar games such GTA and RDR
I'd be willing to bet thats more so because of the larger societal issues than the lack of nuance in gaming, a friend group I regularly talk with say the stupidest shit imaginable and have opinions I perhaps dont agree with but I still respect them for it and hold no grudges, one time we were doing a raid and the leader was just having a bad day and got mad at me for doing something nobody else had a problem with and meant nothing in the situation, we talked it out later and are still great friends. it all depends whether you find that group you can slot into comfortably
Not completely as a veteran i can say it's everywhere in the military. You wouldn't believe the things that are said. I'm talking people using racial sterotypes against themselves even in reverse ways. Had friends of color come up to my rack slap their belt on my rack and tell me to get back out in the fields with a white southern accent. As a white guy i have never laughed so hard in my life. The solution is how we are similar not how we are diffrent the military drills in your head how you are one of the same.

Just my take from that comment, I believe it's because there are a mountain of people who are attacking or championing this game without ever: 1. Playing the game. 2. Watching indepth reviews of the game. 3. Playing many games at all. People are coming to conclusions about the game being good or bad who know nothing about it.

The review industry was founded on the premise that the critics would fairly sumize a game or piece of media, so you could make an informed decision with just enough information about it. Now, we trust youtubers more, because we are at least aware of their biases. Also, discussions about games and media are not taking place in a healthy neutral space anymore. There are two clashing sides, and I find silly people demanding armistice from one side while there's no genuine intention of reaching a common ground from the other.

Yep, so we either fight back or let them rot the entire industry like they've done to most major films, TV series and comics. They're coming either way whether people want to think about it or not.
The entire problem can be summed up with a single word: representation. When the fictional character you create is not a person but a representative of an entire social group, he can no longer have human flaws because of the implication that the entire social group has these flaws. Thus he becomes a positive stereotype of that group with no relatability.
This a consequence of a society unable to figure out how to handle people who overreact. This is what happens when you can, for an example, call something racist and if you're wrong it has no consequences.
The issue exists with people unable to understand that something probably isn't racist. It's an emotional response to something, emotions are internal only. There's a separation of logical thinking and emotional response to truth. Some people have a skewed sense of the world and are unable to allow themselves to accept alternative thinking. Everyone can have an opinion but many of them are not accurate at all. Those who are inaccurate need to be properly nudged in the right direction for our social structure to survive and thrive

We can’t have character personality anymore. It has to be sexual identity and race first instead of them just being interesting characters. FYI am a minority and I hate how gaming now is half like this now. We play games for escapism and gameplay not far right or far left views. We just want good stories and interesting characters.
Identifying someone by their ethnicity, sexuality, or gender is downright dehumanizing. You can't very well identify a person by one choice of behavior or something they were born with. There's A LOT more to a person than these kind of superficial labels. And using those stereotypes as the foundation for character design is just as offensive as the cartoon blackfaces from the early 1900s.
I keep pointing to Hazbin Hotel as a perfect example of amazing characters who also just happen to be LGBT, because they don’t make their sexuality their CORE IDENTITY, they just happen to be gay/bi/whatever. And that’s fine. It’s when it becomes their entire personality and a thinly-veiled attempt at preaching a message that it’s a problem. Nobody wants to hear a character prattle on and on about the difficulties of being trans. Just have the character be trans as a side characteristic. We don’t need to constantly hear about it.
embedded in what you said, personality immature artists put things over verbs, circumstances over evolution, and identity over personality these people can't write good characters or good stories and if veilguard was just bad writing and annoying fortnite-ified art effects and character models, i might find something to enjoy in it but i cannot forgive a game that lectures me on trans issues and pronouns at that point i'm so annoyed i don't want anything to do with that game
The problem for me is hearing real life words in these fantasy worlds. "Bigot" "racism" "transgender" "gay", etc. Peter Jackson didn't include a single one of these words in the LoTR trilogy, i want to immerse myself in a made up world so having real life words takes me out of the immersion.
its so annoying because its poisoning the well. I don't like having to question if a female lead in a game is there for disingenuous reasons. It could be a genuinely good character with well thought out motivations. Or it could be a Mary sue who's gender is her only character trait. Nobody trusts it anymore and because of that, no one can ever do it with actually good intentions without that doubt seeping in. It ruins genuinely good products because there are so many genuinely horrible examples.

Didn't play Veilguard, but I did see a playthorugh, and I couldn't finish it. Almost everything feels so damn wrong, and I don't just mean the DEI situation. The characters, their dialogues, actions and other things - it is so damn jarring that I nearly had an aneurism. Almost everyone of them is not just bad, they are forgettable and you want to forget about them. And while I was watching that playthrough, I was remembering Inquisition, and I couldn't help but compare the two. It was like comparing heaven and deep mine earth. Take for example the two Qunari characters: Iron Bull and Taash. At a first glance, Bull appeared like an easy-going bruiser, always down for a good fight, good drink and good time, but he was also extremely intelligent, being a Spy of Qunari, away from them for years. His theme was struggling with his own identity, who he is and what he was: a soulles cog in the machine of Qunari, or his own, free being. This made him absolutely fantastic, and it didn't feel forced, nor did we have to hear about it every single time. Oh, and let's not forget, that Bull was also a pan, and wasn't in any way weird, because he didn't make a big deal about it? Heck he and Dorian had an absolutely perfect relationship going, and I was all for it, and I am a straight guy. And then there is Taash, and honestly... The first quest basically made it clear that she is an absolutely abhorent character, and not in an intended way. The way she spoke, carried herself, acted like she was victimized, less than what she deserved, made her seem like a petulant child at best, and when things came to her identity... They took an absolutely atrocious way to look at it, focusing on her gender, instead of actual identity. And then there is the way lore of the game literally bent over and broke just for her, and that just compounds it all. Gender isn't identity, it is only part of it, and only if you want it to be. It takes far more to make a person who they are, like in the case with Bull, which made his story arc far more engaging than that of Taash. The two had similar pathways, but one of them really did show what it means to have it's own identity, and the other tried to be a propaganda, and failed.
I think the issue also with Taash is her being non-binary in a world ending even is so weird? Like will someone that is dying care about your gender orientation? It is so forced.
Weve all seen the "Isabella" clip talking to Tarsh. Has anyone seen when Tarsh interacts with the necromancer and refuses to call him anything but a "death mage". Really a mask off moment. They want you to feel compelled to "do the right thing" but they won't do it themselves.
Yeah, it's not even an rpg, really. I'd say it's just action adventure at this point. The game pretty much forces you to be the goody two shoes, and all dialogue choices do is say the same thing with different tones (I agree, I agree sarcastically, I agree sternly) Defeats the whole purpose of, you know, role playing lmao
Honestly if better writers made the game. This part would actually be depth to the characters. They want everyone to get along, but seeing taboo or something they personally can’t like. They throw away that get along attitude to that person or thing. And if confronted (correctly) they would see that double standard and aim to fix it, I dunno barve for days alone with you occasionally coming by seeing it. Even when no one sees they beat themselves up about it. Or they could double down and refuse to accept that fact, always being a sore topic. You know. Depth. Where dialogue choices changes people.
@@Red_Steampunker Yeah, the player character, and by extension the players, are just spectators in this game, who can chime in and say some stuff, but it doesn't change anything, aside from three or four choices in the whole game. Taash for example could have been a great character if she was just written better.

Asmongold hasn't experienced the downgrade of quality per each DA game that was released so of course he doesn't understand why longtime fans of the IP are pissed
Thats subjective, Origins didnt click with me, since I have to like both story and gameplay, same with DA2, but I loved inquisition, gameplay was little clunky, yet better then other two and before you ask no, I have no idea about story quality of previous games, the gameplay was too ofputing for me, that I didnt get far in both.
@@ashflame6888 No, old DA fans would love an actual 6/10 DA game. DA: The Veilguard isnt a DA game though, and the only only reason I've heard for it being a 6/10 is that it didn't launch completely broken.

Yep, my wife and I have been building our retro collection at a rapid rate over the last year or two. Although propaganda in new games isn't the only reason, it's becoming a primary motivation for us.
I hear this all the time and it’s because a lot of old games where subtle with their viewpoints which created thought provocation and gave you the space to think for yourself
I would like to point out that the REASON this is an issue is because the DEVS put it in the game. You can't really blame gamers for hating on a game when the devs invite that hate. If you want the problem to stop than these companies need to FAIL. That is the point. They brought this issue to US, no mercy on these shyt woke companies.
Tbh we're way passed "calling it out" or arguing about it at nauseum. I'm done with these conversations. If a studio puts their preachy bs in a game, I simply wont buy it and move on. There's way too many great games being released all the time to stress out about this any longer. If the game doesn't sell and they continue failing eventually this will go away. Arguing about it achieves less than nothing.

You shouldn't feel embarrassed. This is not what you wanted and you have no control over what direction "the higher powers" take and how they manipulate people. Multiple agendas are at work. Gaming has been frowned upon for quite some time. It usually isn't considered to be a productive activity. Each year, a higher and higher percentage of a certain group of people are retracting from society and gaming is an excellent substitute for working and other activities. Societies consider less productivity as being a problem, but can't deal with the problem without shifting the blame away from themselves. They'll use exaggerated terms like addiction, anti-social behaviour and others. It's never been easier to punish the majority for the bad actions of a minute minority. This further divides people. E.g.: A spouse might even feel in the right when he or she controls the life of the other spouse. Examples like this further break down the concept of the family unit which increases short-term productivity. I wouldn't be surprised if they make gaming a ridiculously extortionate hobby.

I think the reason why it got this bad is because gaming studios would make terrible decisions. Micro transactions, poor writing, selling skins and loot crates that cost over 50% of the cost to buy the game, putting ideology in the game, insulting the fans, censoring old titles and new ones. The list is almost infinite. The pressure has been building and people are just straight up mad now so the pressure is finally being released and its 100% the triple A studios faults.
This is why the "pronoun" issue is a good example, on one hand people on all sides can be emotionally too childish to deal with differing opinions, but it becomes impossible to even ignore a political topic when a basic part of language you would use when discussing any other topic already gets hijacked. Either my memories deceive me and i remember wrong...But it seems Asmon and a few others think Shale was some asexual, lgbtq insert. But if i remember right, Shale was a dwarf woman before she was turned into a golem. Later on in the story, we could find the golem making anvil, where we found out living dwarves souls were bonded to the golems. Then we either had the choice to destroy it, because it was a form enslavement( as golems could be controlled with a "remote" stick), or we could start to use it. Depending on the choice made we either had dwarfs or golems helping is in the final fight in Denerim.

Pre-video games, going to a bar and hanging out with your friends was a way to relax and unwind. Just like how video games are a form of escapism, many people don't want political discussion forced upon them when they're just trying to chill. Having these discussions is good but it's polite behavior to keep discussions about politics and religion to yourself unless you're close with a person or you're positive the other party is looking for a spirited debate.
A lot of great games have politics in them. Its just that they don't slap you in the face with it. Its part of the story or world building, not the primary focus.

I'm having the problem that someone close to me is insistent on having these political conversations. The minute I say a dissenting opinion, the person gets emotional and lashes out. Then they wonder why I don't actively engage in these conversations. I keep explaining that it's not fun to get yelled at and I'm just tryna live my life and not think about this shit 24/7, but they don't seem to get it.
It's the people who think, "Either you're 100% with me or you're 100% against me." It's really, really annoying. If you can't avoid the person (I had a coworker like that once) sometimes the best option is to use "Gray Rock", which was developed to cope with narcissists. If you've never heard of it, look up Gray (or Grey) Rock and narcissism, there are lots of videos on it. That helped with my obnoxious coworker.
I have a friend who was like that, my solution was to intentionally exaggerat all my opinions to the extreme opposite of his as soon as he started getting into it, it would piss him off and frustrate him to the point of turning red, sweating and getting teary eyed. And then you just cut off the conversation, ignore whatever he said next and do the same thing next time he started getting into it, this would absolutely infuriate him especially as i was usually laughing my ass off at his frustration, i just started stating insane opinions, outright lying, stating i was gaslighting him and he would just continue going. This went went on for maybe a couple months or a year at most untill he started learning that he was just ruining his own day or whole week even while i was laughing my ass off. He learned to stop doing it and calmed down, even slowly came to admit he was going a bit far himself. Were still friends and hes pretty chill these days despite vehemently disagreeing with a lot of my political opinions
@JaredWhiter I had this exact issue with my leftie former-teacher grandmother. I spent 20 years actively avoiding talking about anything political with her because of the ridiculous vehemence that she'd talk at people that didn't 100% agree with her on every point. I did the same with most of that side of my family because they were of the same opinions, though to much less of a fervent degree, but I successfully managed to avoid talking about politics for 20 years until she started interrogating me about political issues one time she texted me to wish me happy birthday. Over the course of 3 days she refused to stop texting me random political bullshit and insulting my intelligence, just because I didn't agree with her on every little political issue she brought up. I eventually told her to shut up, and refused to talk to her for 5 years, and I was ready to keep doing that forever, but she finally begged me to talk to her again. I only agreed if she could keep politics 100% out of any conversation with me, and I told her that I'm fully ready to cut her out of my life again the moment she crosses that boundary. Sometimes you just need to remove people from your life if they cause you that much grief, no matter what your relationship with that person is. You're never forced to keep any particular person in your life, family included.

I think part of what makes this argument get worse and worse is that we keep seeing IPs get ruined by all this identity culture war BS, and every time a sequel comes, anticipation turns into dread, cause we know what we’re gonna get… more horseshit… so we get more and more protective of the titles we like and more aggressive toward the folks demanding all these unwanted changes.

I'm absolutely a participant in the culture war, but I do have a rule I follow. If you aren't attacking anyone, I will try to treat you with respect. I'm not out to tell people they're not allowed to like things I don't like, I can see why others do but they're just hurting their cause when they make themselves a nuisance. The activism in gaming has arrived at a point where it’s not just ignorant of the space it’s invading but actively disrespectful. “Top surgery” is a bilateral mastectomy, which is performed far more commonly to treat or prevent breast cancer. Imagine how someone with BRCA who had this surgery at age 25 feels when their scars are celebrated as a societal advancement. These activists treat their issue du jour like a Sith: if you’re not with me then you’re my enemy. This stems from a failure to understand a basic change management principle: create a mutually agreed upon definition and magnitude of the problem. By unilaterally injecting their viewpoints into new venues without invitation, they force a spectrum of opinions into an artificial dichotomy. They then move the goalposts with the intent of shaming increasingly large groups into accepting with the activists ham-fisted attempts at incorporating their views into games. Eventually people realize the activists jumped the shark and reject the activists methods wholesale. The change efforts collapse because the methods were bad, not because gamers reject the underlying concepts. Ultimately gamers hold the trump card: the “do nothing” option. No one has to play or buy their games no matter how many times someone is called a bigot by an activist with a bruised ego. It’s no wonder the most popular games are a decade old. I wish we could just look at the message. Unfortunately when the messenger has a history of cherry picking details it’s hard to know how genuine the message is. I think that’s why certain people get called out way more often than others regardless of the message.
I had subscriptions on three magazines in the 90s and early 2000s called Level, Playstation Magazine and Super Play (all Swedish). I got to know the journalists through the magazines and a sort of parasocial relationship with them, through good and bad games. Those journalists gave me so many good recommendations and in many cases they didnt have the same point of view as me, but they still recommended the game for gamers who did. The point im making is, that they didnt want to merge what they thought or what they liked with the opinion you would have, but by reading the reviews and slowly learning what they liked, i got a good insight in what type of game it was and if it was for me or not, based on the journalist personality. God i miss that... No politics, noting but the importance of a good game... I had love for the game journalist back then...
If we were talking Mass Effect or DA: Origins, i could call people overblowing the problems as lunatics. However, we are talking about games where people who have criticised the character creator of games are being called reactionaries and any mod that is remotely scandalous to the left is instantly banned. No enough is enough and draw a line in the sand. There is no middle ground with Veilguard because half of it is making a statement one way or the other and the other half is a clear bastardisation of a genre where Origins could be said as one of the best examples of an RPG. You don't want to be involved in the conflict ignore the game but don't walk into a minefield that the developers deliberately created.
Exactly. I don't understand why people keep streaming Veilguard after admitting they hate what happened to it. Why are people paying for this with prior knowledge of what it is? Why feed into the problem?
One of the main things people repeatedly miss about this is also that the developers themselves do not care if their games fail. The executives and investors care, but they (the devs) do not care. Their goal is not to make a successful video game that sells well and connects with their customers. Their goal is to present their ideology to you and try to get you to accept it.
But you DO want to pay for propaganda. You DO want your games to push an agenda. You just want them to push YOUR agenda. I literally know for an objective 100% fact that if this Dragon Age was about killing people who identify differently, forcing your character to believe in the Maker (christian god), and featured only white straight men who are all 6 foot plus and 250lbs of muscle, you would be clamoring for game of the year and telling everyone else who doesn't like it that "they're trying to inject their politics into the game" You all can have your opinion, its your right. But you should be honest about it. You want to buy Extremist Right Wing propaganda, just not slightly left of center propaganda. You LOVE forcing your politics into every single millimeter of space you can, you just dont want OTHER politics there.

I’ll say it again, their ratios are way off. These people are baking a cake with their favorite ingredient, ketchup. And instead of dabbing ketchup around a chocolate cake, they’re making a chocolate cake with ketchup layers, and ketchup icing. There are so many external and internal factors at work as to why they’re like this. I’m 100% confident this is an orchestrated attack on men (and you know what type of men) to destroy the things they find an escape in, while also getting the newer generation accustomed to this current direction. The answer is to consume what you find value in, play the classics, and continue to speak with your wallet. It wouldn’t hurt to have a counter culture of publishers/developers that aren’t on this train of focusing so heavy on activism. Ultimately, I think the industry will need to be brought to its knees, or die, before these types can be shaken off. The funding that supports this is the bigger issue, and even that money dries up.

Dorian was a great character in Inquisition, he was quirky funny and enjoyable. He was gay and wasn't in anyones face about it, and whats even better he was respected for it.
Yeah, it was handled super respectfully as well. As for Veilguard, Taash could have been an AMAZING character if she was just written better. But the devs decided to use the character as a walking agenda.

Remember that, in the end, your wallet decides the outcome for these companies and the cultural war. There are so many games out there that it fills libraries. You can have media spin that DA Veilguard was a success or failure. +80,000 players sounds like a great number, but many don't realize that the number could have been +500,000 because gamers were looking forward to Dragon Age: The Dreadwolf, which was intended 10 years ago and not the slop that it's been reduced to today. Why do I say that? Because in a year Baldur's Gate 3 had +870,000 players. Elden Ring +970,000 players. Black Myth Wukong +2,400,000. Gamers are tired of the political BS and poor writing. I play a game to escape and have fun. I don't have much money, so I usually wait to get a game in a year or two after the price has dropped. If it's not well received, then I don't get the game (essentially, picking the cream of the crop). It's plain and simple. AAA Game companies don't realize that long-term buyers exist, and if they're making slop, then people like me, don't buy it. In other words, that company lost a customer, which adds up. Instead, I mostly play indie games or older games made 10-30 years ago. Emulation/roms, hacks, can be downright amazing.

I applied for a job once where a trans employee checked my Facebook to see for anything "problematic". I was respectful with this trans person, used their prefered pronouns and everything. But some old jokes or memes i liked were too "problematic". Ive had heated debates with friends wether I should set my Facebook to private, but no Id rather not self censor and have a company that is problematic to ME by judging me behind my back on something not remotely relevant to the job, filter me out sooner than later
Maybe they were afraid you would drag their names through the mud if you were ever given the opportunity and almost sure something like that has already happened so in short you dodged a bullet but you should delete your FB lol
I would definitely check someone's social media if they voluntarily provided it, but I'd consider it a red flag if an employer required access to accounts not provided. Plus, it's not as if someone couldn't just have multiple accounts, have accounts that are anonymous/private and deny they even exist, or legitimately not use certain platforms. Other than Facebook I've never had a social media account with my real name, and even my Facebook was always private.

The issue with Veilguard isn't even just the LGBT stuff it's also the way the characters talk like modern millennial californians, it's just jarring and immersion wrecking stuff throughout the entire game, i can't even take it seriously for a second, you see the fantasy character but you hear the voice actor, you know what i mean?

What truly happened was that one of the people that got mentioned was Zoe Quinn, because there was a lot of evidence of how shady she was. Some people started "trolling" her and she then did this magician's trick of hand-waving about sexism so people wouldn't pay attention to the true issues that gamers were trying to discuss.
Many journalists saw how effective this trick was and started lying about the situation and some attention hungry people got on the bandwagon and we've been in this mess ever since.
And now we know it is true.
I think no matter where you stand on the real life issues, you should be able to look at veil guard’s childish, dumbed down, educational video-esque dialogue. The “coming” out scene, like something out of a poorly written YA novel, and say “this isn’t what we play video games for”.
Some of these scenes are some outright Dora the explorer level “do you see swiper?” “Swiped no misgendering” type of content.
No one fires up a “fantasy adventure” to get a 10 minute lecture about what being non-binary is and why it’s important.
Trying to turn a recreational source of entertainment into a propaganda platform for “correct” education, and dumbing the writing down until it’s a 4kids anime… is not what people enjoy.

We're arguably in one of the greatest periods of gaming. Triple AAA studios are producing a lot of slop, but everybody else is pumping out a lot of diamonds. Look at last year, for instance. We had a ton of very popular, well produced games in virtually every genre. If BG3 wasn't released last year, so many games would have won awards.
But due to AAA gaming stumbling, and because there's just SO many games out nowadays, it can make it seem like we're in a downslide.

Been gaming for almost 40 years. I've reached the point where I don't get hyped for anything, anymore. If a game I'm interested in comes out, I simply wait for user reviews and sometimes even watch play throughs to ensure the game is what I hope and I'm not accidentally giving money to people who hate me. You would have to be a complete moron to get hyped or pre-order, nowadays.
Same for me. There are so many great older games that go on sale constantly for 50% off (or more) that I can't justify to myself to get caught in the hype train. Some games still have beta's and I'll play that if I'm interested to make my own judgement but for the rest I can just wait a year for a summer sale to pick it up.
Just play indie games or older classics until reviews and/or sales show.

Had friends of color come up to my rack slap their belt on my rack and tell me to get back out in the fields with a white southern accent. As a white guy i have never laughed so hard in my life. The review industry was founded on the premise that the critics would fairly sumize a game or piece of media, so you could make an informed decision with just enough information about it. Now, we trust youtubers more, because we are at least aware of their biases. Also, discussions about games and media are not taking place in a healthy neutral space anymore. There are two clashing sides, and I find silly people demanding armistice from one side while there's no genuine intention of reaching a common ground from the other.

Yep, so we either fight back or let them rot the entire industry like they've done to most major films, TV series and comics. They're coming either way whether people want to think about it or not.
The entire problem can be summed up with a single word: representation. When the fictional character you create is not a person but a representative of an entire social group, he can no longer have human flaws because of the implication that the entire social group has these flaws. Thus he becomes a positive stereotype of that group with no relatability.

This a consequence of a society unable to figure out how to handle people who overreact. This is what happens when you can, for an example, call something racist and if you're wrong it has no consequences.

The issue exists with people unable to understand that something probably isn't racist. It's an emotional response to something, emotions are internal only. There's a separation of logical thinking and emotional response to truth. Some people have a skewed sense of the world and are unable to allow themselves to accept alternative thinking. Everyone can have an opinion but many of them are not accurate at all. Those who are inaccurate need to be properly nudged in the right direction for our social structure to survive and thrive

Didn't play Veilguard, but I did see a playthorugh, and I couldn't finish it. Almost everything feels so damn wrong, and I don't just mean the DEI situation. The characters, their dialogues, actions and other things - it is so damn jarring that I nearly had an aneurism.
Almost everyone of them is not just bad, they are forgettable and you want to forget about them. And while I was watching that playthrough, I was remembering Inquisition, and I couldn't help but compare the two. It was like comparing heaven and deep mine earth.
Take for example the two Qunari characters: Iron Bull and Taash.
At a first glance, Bull appeared like an easy-going bruiser, always down for a good fight, good drink and good time, but he was also extremely intelligent, being a Spy of Qunari, away from them for years. His theme was struggling with his own identity, who he is and what he was: a soulles cog in the machine of Qunari, or his own, free being. This made him absolutely fantastic, and it didn't feel forced, nor did we have to hear about it every single time. Oh, and let's not forget, that Bull was also a pan, and wasn't in any way weird, because he didn't make a big deal about it? Heck he and Dorian had an absolutely perfect relationship going, and I was all for it, and I am a straight guy.
And then there is Taash, and honestly... The first quest basically made it clear that she is an absolutely abhorent character, and not in an intended way. The way she spoke, carried herself, acted like she was victimized, less than what she deserved, made her seem like a petulant child at best, and when things came to her identity... They took an absolutely atrocious way to look at it, focusing on her gender, instead of actual identity. And then there is the way lore of the game literally bent over and broke just for her, and that just compounds it all.
Gender isn't identity, it is only part of it, and only if you want it to be. It takes far more to make a person who they are, like in the case with Bull, which made his story arc far more engaging than that of Taash. The two had similar pathways, but one of them really did show what it means to have it's own identity, and the other tried to be a propaganda, and failed.
I think the issue also with Taash is her being non-binary in a world ending even is so weird? Like will someone that is dying care about your gender orientation? It is so forced.

Thats subjective, Origins didnt click with me, since I have to like both story and gameplay, same with DA2, but I loved inquisition, gameplay was little clunky, yet better then other two and before you ask no, I have no idea about story quality of previous games, the gameplay was too ofputing for me, that I didnt get far in both.

Each year, a higher and higher percentage of a certain group of people are retracting from society and gaming is an excellent substitute for working and other activities.
Societies consider less productivity as being a problem, but can't deal with the problem without shifting the blame away from themselves.
They'll use exaggerated terms like addiction, anti-social behaviour and others. It's never been easier to punish the majority for the bad actions of a minute minority. This further divides people. E.g.: A spouse might even feel in the right when he or she controls the life of the other spouse. Examples like this further break down the concept of the family unit which increases short-term productivity.
I wouldn't be surprised if they make gaming a ridiculously extortionate hobby.

The culture war exists no matter how much we try to deny it. This is what happens when wider politics and cultural opinions become so divided that there's little real common ground anymore. And some of you are going to call me biased, but i put this squarely on the shoulders of the left.
The left were the ones who started shoving modern political issues in games. It was the left that decided to turn the industry toxic and push out anyone with an opinion to the right of Lenin, it was them who initiated things like DEI and ESG, and it was them who infiltrated all these places of power and academia and and basically gatekeep anyone else out of it.
I think the reason why it got this bad is because gaming studios would make terrible decisions. Micro transactions, poor writing, selling skins and loot crates that cost over 50% of the cost to buy the game, putting ideology in the game, insulting the fans, censoring old titles and new ones. The list is almost infinite.
The pressure has been building and people are just straight up mad now so the pressure is finally being released and its 100% the triple A studios faults.

Either my memories deceive me and i remember wrong...But it seems Asmon and a few others think Shale was some asexual, lgbtq insert. But if i remember right, Shale was a dwarf woman before she was turned into a golem. Later on in the story, we could find the golem making anvil, where we found out living dwarves souls were bonded to the golems. Then we either had the choice to destroy it, because it was a form enslavement( as golems could be controlled with a "remote" stick), or we could start to use it. Depending on the choice made we either had dwarfs or golems helping is in the final fight in Denerim.

Pre-video games, going to a bar and hanging out with your friends was a way to relax and unwind. Just like how video games are a form of escapism, many people don't want political discussion forced upon them when they're just trying to chill.
Having these discussions is good but it's polite behavior to keep discussions about politics and religion to yourself unless you're close with a person or you're positive the other party is looking for a spirited debate.
They really need to keep politics out of games. As it was mentioned, we play games to escape reality not to include it in our gaming experience.
A lot of great games have politics in them. Its just that they don't slap you in the face with it. Its part of the story or world building, not the primary focus.

They don't want you to get away from stress. They don't want escapism for you. And they know exactly how big gaming is and how much they can influence people with it.
I'm having the problem that someone close to me is insistent on having these political conversations. The minute I say a dissenting opinion, the person gets emotional and lashes out. Then they wonder why I don't actively engage in these conversations. I keep explaining that it's not fun to get yelled at and I'm just tryna live my life and not think about this shit 24/7, but they don't seem to get it.
It's the people who think, "Either you're 100% with me or you're 100% against me."
It's really, really annoying. If you can't avoid the person (I had a coworker like that once) sometimes the best option is to use "Gray Rock", which was developed to cope with narcissists.

I have a friend who was like that, my solution was to intentionally exaggerat all my opinions to the extreme opposite of his as soon as he started getting into it, it would piss him off and frustrate him to the point of turning red, sweating and getting teary eyed. And then you just cut off the conversation, ignore whatever he said next and do the same thing next time he started getting into it, this would absolutely infuriate him especially as i was usually laughing my ass off at his frustration, i just started stating insane opinions, outright lying, stating i was gaslighting him and he would just continue going.
This went went on for maybe a couple months or a year at most untill he started learning that he was just ruining his own day or whole week even while i was laughing my ass off.
He learned to stop doing it and calmed down, even slowly came to admit he was going a bit far himself.
Were still friends and hes pretty chill these days despite vehemently disagreeing with a lot of my political opinions
@JaredWhiter I had this exact issue with my leftie former-teacher grandmother. I spent 20 years actively avoiding talking about anything political with her because of the ridiculous vehemence that she'd talk at people that didn't 100% agree with her on every point. I did the same with most of that side of my family because they were of the same opinions, though to much less of a fervent degree, but I successfully managed to avoid talking about politics for 20 years until she started interrogating me about political issues one time she texted me to wish me happy birthday.
Over the course of 3 days she refused to stop texting me random political bullshit and insulting my intelligence, just because I didn't agree with her on every little political issue she brought up.
I eventually told her to shut up, and refused to talk to her for 5 years, and I was ready to keep doing that forever, but she finally begged me to talk to her again.
I only agreed if she could keep politics 100% out of any conversation with me, and I told her that I'm fully ready to cut her out of my life again the moment she crosses that boundary.
Sometimes you just need to remove people from your life if they cause you that much grief, no matter what your relationship with that person is. You're never forced to keep any particular person in your life, family included.

I think part of what makes this argument get worse and worse is that we keep seeing IPs get ruined by all this identity culture war BS, and every time a sequel comes, anticipation turns into dread, cause we know what we’re gonna get… more horseshit… so we get more and more protective of the titles we like and more aggressive toward the folks demanding all these unwanted changes.
This is why I'm silently hoping my favorite IPs don't get adaptations anymore. I never want to see Robin Hobb's books become movies, shows or games.

I'm absolutely a participant in the culture war, but I do have a rule I follow. If you aren't attacking anyone, I will try to treat you with respect. I'm not out to tell people they're not allowed to like things I don't like, I can see why others do but they're just hurting their cause when they make themselves a nuisance.

The change efforts collapse because the methods were bad, not because gamers reject the underlying concepts. Ultimately gamers hold the trump card: the “do nothing” option. You and lots of people, a huge franchise with a giant fanbase like Dragon Age having only 80k concurrent player peak on release shows that a lot of people are tired.
The culture war exists no matter how much we try to deny it. This is what happens when wider politics and cultural opinions become so divided that there's little real common ground anymore. And some of you are going to call me biased, but i put this squarely on the shoulders of the left.
The left were the ones who started shoving modern political issues in games. I wish we could just look at the message. Unfortunately when the messenger has a history of cherry picking details it’s hard to know how genuine the message is. I think that’s why certain people get called out way more often than others regardless of the message.
I had subscriptions on three magazines in the 90s and early 2000s called Level, Playstation Magazine and Super Play (all Swedish). I got to know the journalists through the magazines and a sort of parasocial relationship with them, through good and bad games. Those journalists gave me so many good recommendations and in many cases they didnt have the same point of view as me, but they still recommended the game for gamers who did. The point im making is, that they didnt want to merge what they thought or what they liked with the opinion you would have, but by reading the reviews and slowly learning what they liked, i got a good insight in what type of game it was and if it was for me or not, based on the journalist personality. God i miss that... No politics, noting but the importance of a good game... I had love for the game journalist back then...
If we were talking Mass Effect or DA: Origins, i could call people overblowing the problems as lunatics. However, we are talking about games where people who have criticised the character creator of games are being called reactionaries and any mod that is remotely scandalous to the left is instantly banned. No enough is enough and draw a line in the sand. There is no middle ground with Veilguard because half of it is making a statement one way or the other and the other half is a clear bastardisation of a genre where Origins could be said as one of the best examples of an RPG. You don't want to be involved in the conflict ignore the game but don't walk into a minefield that the developers deliberately created.

The answer is to consume what you find value in, play the classics, and continue to speak with your wallet.

Remember that, in the end, your wallet decides the outcome for these companies and the cultural war. There are so many games out there that it fills libraries. You can have media spin that DA Veilguard was a success or failure. +80,000 players sounds like a great number, but many don't realize that the number could have been +500,000 because gamers were looking forward to Dragon Age: The Dreadwolf, which was intended 10 years ago and not the slop that it's been reduced to today.
Why do I say that? Because in a year Baldur's Gate 3 had +870,000 players. Elden Ring +970,000 players. Black Myth Wukong +2,400,000. Gamers are tired of the political BS and poor writing. I play a game to escape and have fun. I don't have much money, so I usually wait to get a game in a year or two after the price has dropped. If it's not well received, then I don't get the game (essentially, picking the cream of the crop). It's plain and simple. AAA Game companies don't realize that long-term buyers exist, and if they're making slop, then people like me, don't buy it. In other words, that company lost a customer, which adds up. Instead, I mostly play indie games or older games made 10-30 years ago. Emulation/roms, hacks, can be downright amazing.

I applied for a job once where a trans employee checked my Facebook to see for anything "problematic". I was respectful with this trans person, used their prefered pronouns and everything. But some old jokes or memes i liked were too "problematic".
Ive had heated debates with friends wether I should set my Facebook to private, but no Id rather not self censor and have a company that is problematic to ME by judging me behind my back on something not remotely relevant to the job, filter me out sooner than later

I would definitely check someone's social media if they voluntarily provided it, but I'd consider it a red flag if an employer required access to accounts not provided. Plus, it's not as if someone couldn't just have multiple accounts, have accounts that are anonymous/private and deny they even exist, or legitimately not use certain platforms. Other than Facebook I've never had a social media account with my real name, and even my Facebook was always private.
