    I'm working my way through all of the basil rathbone sherlock holmes I can find. This one is excellent, for me it's only second to hound of the baskervilles. Quite deep and more cryptic than any of the rest. Basil is undoubtedly the quintessential holmes, simply the best.

    Basil Rathbone is the Quintessential SHERLOCK HOLMES.. ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!!

    • @lopa2828
      @lopa2828 4 года назад +1

      And that ruined his wonderful career. At the beginning he was good as a villain of any movie. See "Robin Hood" and other classical movies. But after Sherlock Holmes he could not portrayed those roles because people never accepted him for that. He acted till death but never got his due recognition for the same role after that.

      @@lopa2828 The Sherlock Holmes series did not destroy Rathbone's career as you seem to imply, but it did make him a major star as a result of the Holmes series, as well as stereotyped it. Rathbone was also a major radio star because of his radio version of Sherlock Holmes.

    • @lopa2828
      @lopa2828 4 года назад +2

      @@dariowiter3078 : what you are saying is partially correct. But for that role he never got recognition as he deserved. He was very talented actor who can play positive or negative roles with ease. But after Sherlock Holmes series he never got any offer in negative roles. Whatever I am saying it's not only my observation, it's Basil Rathbone's own observation. I learned it from his many interviews on RUclips and documentaries over him after his death. All are on RUclips. You can yourself discover whether I am right or not after watching them.

    Sunday noon, WGN in the '80s featured detective-private eye classics, I think it was called "Sunday Noon Mysteries" or something like that. Never missed them: Sherlock Holmes, Charlie Chan, Bulldog Drummond, Dick Tracy... all the great '40s movies. Owning the dvd set for several years, I've spent many a stormy Sunday afternoon curled up with a good book, a hot drink, and the cat on my legs watching this and the other Rathbone-Bruce movies. Better than a valium for relaxing.

      jim ewok well, to be sure, the world isn’t perfect, but when Rathbone made that speech, my mother was sitting at the back of buses in Alabama. Women were not allowed to work any real jobs. There was little help for the poor. If you had an illness or disease, it was a death sentence, not only because you couldn’t afford to pay for care, but the technology didn’t exist to help... if you had cancer, you were probably dead. College opened up for poor and middle class people.
      It’s not so unusual to see mixed couples. Asians are accepted as people... in fact, China, Japan and South Korea have seen a major renaissance not seen in a thousand years.... India is advancing... the Soviet block fell.
      To be honest, it’s really looking pretty good out there.
      I think ole’ Rathbone hit the nail on the head!
      😁
      Give it another 100 years and who knows where it will all lead!

    Good movie, but how did the composer of the ritual know the chessboard floor would survive the centuries? And why not cash in on the royal grant straight away back in the 16th century? The clock repeatedly striking 13 was also unexplained. Despite this, the solution was neat.

Holmes says about there being a new type of ppl on the earth where greed is dead and ppl are more caring toward each other. Not in those exact words but u catch my drift.. 😂 You have to laugh. The world is ever more greedy by the hour, not to mind the year.

      Slim Reaper I find that I must respectfully disagree. There are more charities today, more social programs and more lessons on the respect of human rights than ever before. The real problem is that as the population continues to increase, there are more and more in need. You’re right when you state that greed is everywhere, but kindness is there too.... always fighting greed and selfishness. Sometimes winning and sometimes losing. There are all sorts of programs for the poor that never existed when Rathbone made that speech. I know what you mean though... we are nowhere near any real utopia. I guess in this life we never will be... isn’t it fun trying? 😁
