We have two child care workers (educators) in our household. One is 18 and gets $31.00 per hour. The other is 48 and gets $32.00 per hour. They both have crappy jobs and it's stressful. As much as they would love a payrise they both understand that a payrise adds to the cost of running the centre and ultimately adds to the cost of living across the community. The centre owners would then have to increase their fees and this falls back on the parents. If it were to fall back on the government then it would increase government spending and thus inflation. Leave well alone until the cost of living is under control ... stop feeding inflation. Fix the cost of living or step aside and let someone else have a go.

Child care workers should be paid a market rate. It's a low barrier to entry job, possibly over-regulated. The tax system should advantage married couples to have a stay at home parent by averaging the tax obligation across both spouses, effectively doubling the tax free threshold. Tax rates should also be indexed. This would encourage stay at home parenting and increase the birth rate. Of course those on low incomes would still have family benefits, but the tax system approach would reduce the bureaucracy which should be reflected in lowered taxation. And that would be just the start! Next, get rid of the wasteful energy boondoggle, duplicating our energy system for no benefit to anyone in a meaningless bit of inner-city virtue preening.
