- Beyoncé’s visual album has arrived on Disney+, featuring a reimagined telling of “The Lion King”. Aside from the amazing soundtrack, outstanding dance moves, and stunning visuals, there is a ton of African history, culture and spirituality on display.
Some of America's top artists like Pharrell Williams and Kendrick Lamar link up with some of Africa's largest artists like Burna Boy and Yemi Alade. A connection of African people at home, and abroad, is made.
Take a brief journey with me as I dive into some aspects of Black is King that you may have missed.

Btw - Beyonce righted a wrong done by Disney and many others. The South African artist/musician Solomon Linda was the original writer and creator of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". Which was essentially stolen my the British government in the 1940s. Unfortunately, he died penniless and his family was never compensated for the many remakes, redo tins and adaptations to film used by his art. His family has been in a long legal battle which is depicted on the 2019 Netflix documentary "The Lions Share". Beyonce was so angry when learning of this that she paid her respects by showcasing his original African version as the "Mood for Ever" intro. She made sure to carve out all rights, credits and payments to the family and make Disney finally honor his gift and life!
thanks for the info
She actually reclaimed the story of Lion King, which was an African story, and gave it's characters black faces and an African soundtrack and had the audacity to get Disney to pay for fit since they stole it in the first place. Genius.
@@kingd7369 she paid it
Wow that's Amazing 💜💜💜💜💜
Im 64yo and study africa history i never seen africa history look so good
The most informed and insightful review of this masterpiece! Thank you so much for understanding the importance and significance of these messages and symbols. I learned so much from you - allowing us to further affirm who we are through these teachings and art. You are absolutely amazing and Beyonce like you - is pushing our consciousness beyond our current state. I need to listen to you more!
THANK YOU .... my Brother this was excellent commentary, with visuals taking us into a portal so we can experience our history. I truly enjoyed this. I am a new subscriber, and I am full in my spirit because this entire presentation lifted my soul. Thank you! 💯🙏🏽
Black365 thank you for sharing your knowledge, providing context and value to the visuals Beyonce so artfully gave to us in her production. Masterful review!
When you talked about the rite of passage where the man had to circle in the hut with the hot rocks in the center, they do a similar rite of passage/ceremony among the Lakota known as inipi, which means "to live again".
Its also done in South Africa among the Xhosa people. this shows that all african are connected despite the region
Excellent analysis. I myself am Christian but the backlash to the movie is wild to me because it shows people cannot have nuance. Once can keep African stories and history without practicing the spirituality. But we want to throw everything away. Without knowing about the Dogon for example, you bury the astrological accomplishments of the Mali people. The same people that call the movie demonic may enjoy Percy Jackson, 300, Vikings or just the multitude of entertainment that normalizes European mythology with no issue.
The iconic imagery of Beyonce on the horse with a horned head piece is also inspired by the 1973 Senegalese film Touki Bouki by filmmaker Mambety
interesting...
Love this best reaction need more of these!!!
It took me a minute to figure out that the scene motorcycles with red horns circling is literally the scene with the wildabeast stampede, but now I feel dumb cause I didn't realize the white coffin in the next song was representing Mustapha's coffin, but the song is called Nile and Beyonce's outfit looks very fish / mermaid-ish. Water has to do with death and the ancestors, but also life and re-brith. Kendrick's verse is definitely alluding to sex, but then the Nile River itself is what brings fertility and re-birth to the land of Khemet
I really found this video to be valuable to me. I learned so much. Without this I would not have understood Beyoncé’s movie.
What was the meaning of her putting the baby in the river?
Ummmm you are teaching your ass off...WE gotta get Bey to see this!
Hakuna Matata "I'm so unbothered, I'm so unbothered....I am like soul food, I am a whole mood" (that whole verse got it's flow from Hakuna Matata). And before we get too deep and forget that Bey is gonna be Bey, can we take a second to acknowledge that she had a whole crazy fly outfit that literally showed up for only 2 seconds in the entire film just so she could wear it by the roadside, lol 28:32
All these people who say she is misinterpreting african culture should see this!
Please comment below if you are feeling the analysis! What did we get right? What did we get wrong? Comment below.
Incredible review...... TRULY
This is great video , help me understand our heritage and this movie a lot - Thank you !!!
I didn't expect this. lol I was researching something and your video popped up .
the songwriting for Bigger (the first song) is phenomenal, metaphorical and multilayered, but parts of it sound like she is very literally talking to her child(ren), "you got my blood in you, and you're gonna rise". "I'll be the root, you'll be the tree, pass on the fruit that was given to me, legacy!"...there's part where it feels like she's talking to Jay Z for a few lines, but I agree, in the film she's not the literal mother of Simba, more of a guide or protecting spirit or orisa
Best reaction ever
Teaching brother, the best breakdown ever. Thank you
At 1:11:00 that scene I think is another Orisha teaching. The orisha being Ibêji. I believe there are more orisha representations through out the video as well. The “my power scene” was a representation of Orisha Oya.
Solute the analysis, for sure, but was somewhat impatient with the numerous promotions throughout. 4 out of 5 stars. Keep shinin'. Peace and blessings!
Can you do more videos about the section “I believe in a God, I am a child of God, therefore I am a God”
I watched a few decoding videos of this and this is the best one . Your not reaching you def teaching !!
Thank you so much for the quality for your émission . I learn many heaven things. From now i have more respects to Beyonce and Zasy !
59:15 nope: Tiwa Savage said it (Key to the Kingdom is essentially her song, along with Mr. Eazi... I don't even think Beyonce sang on it ). Beyonce did indeed give us a masterful project, but let's not ignore the massive collaborative contributions from all the African artists, co-directors, song writers etc.
@Jimmy Adams Tiwa Savage lyrics on a song Beyonce didn't even sing on. It's worth pointing out.
Someone else was on that hating "oh Beyonce is an evil witch cause African spirituality is demonic" nonsense and pointed to the line "look around and stay solid like Ogún", but again that was Burna Boy's lyrics on his solo song that Bey didn't even sing on. Lol
So many people say "Brown Skin Girl" featuring Blue Ivy" (who sang 2 lines) and leave out Wizkid's name who sang the whole first half of the song, and combined his voice with Bey on the 2nd half. Yeah, I get the appeal of seeing what a young Blue can do but, let's not just ignore Wizkid's whole existence
It is her project and vision (and a great one) but people literally making other Artists invisible in their minds and comments is lame
How is not giving other artists accolades a good way to make up for Beyonce not being given enough accolades? (the media reviews I saw were actually gushing, btw). Her $$$ ok, but please, the other artists didn't invest their time too? Did Beyonce write all their rhymes for them?
Beyonce got the whole concept, because she was upset that the original South African writer of the music for Lion King got no credit...should we her fans in 2020 still repeat the same mistakes made by racist Disney way back then?
💯 ON POINT, KING!!! THANK YOU
i'm curious, has she read the book? 6:04 ....actually, now I'm curious to read it my own self
JESUS!!!!!!! THE ANCESTER WHO PAID IT ALL ON THE CROSS OF CALVERY 2000 YEARS AGO!!!!!!! ALL PRAISE AND GLORY GO TO HIM AND HIM ALONE!!!!!
