I can relate to this conversation so deeply. My family didn’t have much money growing up, but my Mother did everything in her power to provide us with memorable experiences. I, to this day, struggle with the mindset that I shouldn’t get my hopes up about things, for various reasons. Having the discussion of “expectation vs reality” is an important conversation to have with both kids and adults alike.

Such a good conversation to have with a kid. These stories actually remind me about my own childhood. We didn't have a lot growing up but my parents always did what they could to make sure our needs were met. Kids definitely need to learn the hard concept that we can't always get what we want. Sometimes when we don't get what we want at the time we want it, it can sometimes be a good thing. I love that you ended with the positive affirmations. 😊

I don’t know when it happened, but I developed this way of thinking where I thought if I was happy, it would be taken away from me. Like the black suits would show up and rip the happy away. (Neil Gaiman reference). And I just lived avoiding being happy. I knew I couldn’t expect things all the disappointments in life always seemed to come from my dad and my step father so it just seemed appropriate to just never have any kind of expectation. But then it poured over to where I lost having expectations for myself, like any future for me just didn’t matter. Strange. I was surprised when the meetup happened as I fully expected it to be canceled. I didn’t know how to grapple with the fact that it happened.

Gratefully (very gratefully), I had a Childhood where I may not have always gotten what I wanted, but we always had what we needed. I know that feeling of expectation and building up walls though, I started doing it at 24 when I was told I would probably never get pregnant. I shut myself off from a lot of life because of those crushed dreams.

And here is another good video!🙏🏼
It's so important to have these kinds of conversations with a child!
I missed that in the past and because I missed a lot, I now want to do well for our child, these kinds of conversations will certainly happen, and you inspire me in this!🙏🏼
I also recognize myself in the part where you talk about expectations from your own childhood, I had no expectations of anything for many, many years, not even for/from myself. That is difficult🥺, and difficult to get/have that later when you are older and life is changed🙂
The last part where you say that you love and appreciate them for who they are, and then the kiss on the forehead made me cry, it was so beautiful how you did that!
Yeah J, this one was a really good one, thank you!

This rang true for me. I relate similarly to your experiences as I too, as some other people have said, didn’t have enough money growing up. It’s funny how every one of us has a certain expectation in our lives and we’re going through some type of experience that either leads on a path to our dreams and desires or something completely different that alters it. You reminded me of this quote from Spiderman: No Way Home when MJ says, “if you expect disappointment then you can never really be disappointed” and it was due to the fact she, Peter, and their other friend, Ned all applied to get into the same college and they didn’t and it didn’t phase her because she embraced that philosophy. Hearing that quote I never thought of it that way. It’s not really a healthy way of thinking because it gives me some type of nihilistic viewpoint (doesn’t mean that it is) where if you always expect bad things all the time then life is meaningless and uneventful. I believe life is worth living and expect certainties to align but sometimes it doesn’t. It’s part of the motion of how to live. An expectation not met doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing, I feel being curious about the rejection, the sadness, embracing those emotions of that reality is something worthwhile. We’re all human having the human experience. Not everything will align like that. If you got everything you wanted then how are you to enjoy the curiosities of life. It’s taking the rejection with a grain of salt and being grateful for the things we have and for the things we don’t. I know I went off on a tangent and rambled but I just relate as I had or still somewhat have that type of mindset which I’ve been practicing breaking that habit. Thanks so much for the amazing stories in this one. Really great video, truly. 💙☺️

Hi! It's been a while since you did a dr. Dad video,so I was wondering if we could get another one? Maybe we(the kid) could get our blood drawn,or get our shot? I think it'd be a fun video, just like the others!
