Antique Centrifugal Dental Casting Machine [Restoration]

  • This restoration is on a 1930s dental casting machine made by the Torit Manufacturing Co. of St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. I was unable to find a photo of this model with the exact same base design, but similar designs exist. This machine would most likely be used for casting gold teeth and fillings.
    The base was extremely rusty, but all other parts are made of aluminum or brass, so they held together much better over the years. I decided to use babbitt as a casting metal since it melts at such a low temperature and isn't very expensive. This was my first time casting any metal on my own and learning the process was a lot of fun.
    It's nice to see this tool back in service and spinning molten metal very close to your face at high speed.
    Wrenches, screwdrivers, and socket drivers are now for sale at www.handtoolrescue.com

    • @Halinspark
      @Halinspark Год назад

      My high school had one of these in the jewellery class, but bigger and horizontal. One kid didn't put enough plaster in the mold, so the bottom gave out as it spun and threw molten silver into the wall, which then sprayed me.
      Didn't hurt nearly as much as I expected, but I was still quite annoyed.

    • @xlerb2286
      @xlerb2286 Год назад

      That happened in a jewelry class in college. One kid had the their mold blow out during casting. This was on a more modern horizontal machine and it had a big metal shield around it so nobody was hurt. Turned out they'd dropped the mold taking it out of the burnout oven. It looked ok so they didn't say anything. But investment is fragile and easily damaged once its burnt out. I've used a hand sling centrifuge that a buddy got at a dentist's estate sale but I've never seen a vertical casting machine like this before. I agree it could easily become a metal sprinkler in the wrong hands :)

    I love the way brass looks - ideal material &
    In ’74, I spent a summer at Haystack Scool of Crafts on Deer Isle in Maine. One tangential class had the instructor a week late due to a cold, so they had a Swiss silver smith fly in for a week. Everyone in that class was moaning until he showed up. He was an expert at gravity casting silver and gold. No one had even heard of this before.
    Imagine wooden handle with hand forged chain links to a crucible at it's end, that held the negative mold. One person holds the handle and swings it around as if it was a clock handle (in front of the person) after another person places silver in mold and then melts it with a torch then yells go.
    Huge excitement and cheering ensued, but from a distance, as sometimes the silver flew out. Everyone there learned this technique & made their own handle and chain, which worked well and guess what, they all moaned when he left.
    End of story was that the original teacher showed up a week late, who everyone signed up for originally, and they loved that class twice as much. They all moaned when it ended. They were known as the moaners.

    I'll be honest - ever since I cut the cable for RUclips content a few years ago, I've seen a lot of weird restorations. This is easily in the top 5... Congratulations - your certificate is on the way...
