Didn't they? There was a screenshot in this video where one of the creators was asked why it was cancelled and they said it was because it wasnt profitable.
@@LunatheMoonDragon the thing is we can't confirm if it's true since it was just one employee who said that and it isn't the official position of Mappa on this and considering its popularity and the fandom it seems doubtful. But also they only released merch in Japan so ofc it would have brought less revenue than other franchise who had international merch sales but you have to calculate it proportionally, we don't know what factors were considered to say this. People were buying a lot of fan merch because of this so if they released the official merch outside of Japan this would simply not be true. It just seems like a cop out to me.
@@vaelia1203 MAPPA was just contracted to make YOI. They own the least amount if its IP compared to the rest of the production committee, so it's very much possible that they cancelled it because it wasn't profitable. They never saw most of the money made from merch etc.
See, this is why I desperately wish someone at MAPPA will leak the entire project now that it's been cancelled. I don't care that the movie is incomplete, that it would need a long time to edit all the unfinished bits together chronologically, that there's probably multiple plot-points that were explored and then dropped- I want to see how far they got. And I'm a bit inspired by how many pilots leaked recently (TOH, Amphibia, Milo Murphy's Law, Wander Over Yonder, etc), I genuinely think it's a beautiful thing, even if it's the result of a hacking. I think trying to uncover "lost media" is wonderful.
@@lovelylynx5473 I mean perhaps there is some fully animated material, but when it comes to things like these, especially considering the kind of studio that MAPPA is, it's better to not assume as a fact that production went too far. I personally wouldn't be surprised if it did (it's MAPPA, overwork is their business), but only they know at the end of the day
Why would Mappa do this. To be honest, I wouldn’t have mind the cancellation if it had been confirmed earlier. Like, 4 years? That’s just stabbing fans heart..
Fr. I was holding out hope for so long. And for what? The fandom is ever so ready to resurface at the slightest hint of any additional to the series. Im so disappointed.
Its because if they did it too soon YOI fans would abandon MAPPA, since fans would eventually find out why. It's come out that YOI was canned due to censorship, as Victor was going to come out in the movie. Also, MAPPA used all the YOI money on JJK, AOT and Shounen.
MAPPA was just contracted to make YOI, they don't actually own it, which means they didn't make a lot of money with it despite its popularity. It just doesn't make sense for them to continue with it when they have more profitable projects to work on. The blame should lie on the production committee responsible for YOI and not just MAPPA.
6 years ago my husband proposed to me in Viktor cosplay while i was cosplaying Yuuri. I am beyond heart broken. Our king of Sun and King of Moon cosplays are still my most proud of sewing challenge
As a gay man Yuri on Ice was actually my gay awakening. I know people laugh when they hear that but its because of yuri on ice I'm out and proud. And I will always love yuri on ice. It makes me so sad to see this get cancled.
Yurii on ice as a whole was a great precedent for BL safe and sane media, it is one of the best animations and stories representing a same sex relationship. It actually makes the most sense that you could connect with YOI than with any other media of this genre. I love the variety and diversity in the stories I consume, and because of this I know many other media before this one was pretty toxic in what they showed, and I'm happy that we could at least get the anime complete. Also, MAPPA should've gone bankrupt, I'm extremely salty with the corp and their abuse towards their ignored fans and their employees.
This was literally MAPPA's chance to capitalize completely on Yuri on Ice's profits. They would've earned more than what they've had the last 7 years, but they're nothing more than cowards
I mean they still have jjk and csm which are probably more profitable but yeah yoi could have been not only great thing for fans but quite profitable for Mappa
@@Mialikesthings there is nothing more profitable than a loyal fandom of teenage girls worshipping something. Look at Taylor Swift. Frank Sinatra. The best you can wish for, when it comes to loyalty and revenue, is teenage girls to young adult women liking what you're putting out. And Gojo wont be there forever, anyway
@@MialikesthingsYuri on ice was wayyyyy more well known and popular that jjk , what are you talking about ? Even people who weren’t into anime watched yuri on ice, it was even featured at the Olympics ice skating multiple times ! It could’ve been even more popular too if they kept making more content and milking it instead of sweeping it under the rug .
@@ameliziou4776As a fan of both JJK and YOI as a queer person, I’m already largely disappointed with how badly Mappa manages their shit in general, abuse of their workers, and adding onto how a show like YOI got the movie counterpart cancelled due to censorship.
I really do think the fact that YOI has a large female fanbase is the main reason for MAPPA being unwilling to proceed with it. The anime industry used to be a lot more willing to try different things and cater to many different types of audiences but within the last couple of years that has changed a lot. We keep getting a lot of the same kind of garbage trying to capitalize on series that are popular. Just look at how long we've been stuck in isekai hell since SAO was a big hit. The anime industry has severely cut down on anime aimed at girls/women and even when they do make it the quality is often not at the same level as your typical shounen. It's so frustrating because YOI was such a big phenomenon they could have made bank if they treated it seriously. I knew for a long time it probably wasn't going to be finished, but I still held on to my delusion because YOI meant so much to me. It just feels like a slap to the face.
No thats true, supposedly MAPPA wanted to do more shounen anime as they thought it would gather shippers anyway and make more money while letting go of their main former audience of fangirls and queer fans.
Ever since anime became more "mainstream" during the pandemic and therefore having a lot of viewers from any gender, I knew it was pretty much over for stuff targetting women and queers. Honestly really sad but to be expected
They really hate women and gay people so much they’re willing to loose tons of money just to make sure they don’t get fed . Anime corporations are honestly so bad at business it’s amazing any of them have survived to this point . Like maybe instead of scaling back to only making content for straight men to “increase profits” you should just do the bare minimum of making your content actually available to the millions of people in the west who want to give you money to support your shows instead of forcing everyone to pirate it because they can’t find it anywhere legit to watch . They always complain about how “women don’t buy anime figures like men do” and stuff too like they don’t make the figures for male characters extraordinarily ugly and undesirable compared to the male gaze oriented female figures . L
I remember my friend and I in the back of our french class, not doing the work and instead playing amongus with a black Yuri and white Victor crewmate on our Chromebooks, as I replaced all my "w"s with "v"s so I'd say "vhere did he vent?". Rest in peace YOI.
I made them back in Animal Crossing New Horizons and took cute pictures of them with my friend. I was Viktor and they were Yuri. I even made Yurio... :'(
I remember the plot twist where we learn that drunk Yuri actually asked Viktor to be his coach and it just turned everything on its head! This wasn't just Viktor showing up out of the blue because of a RUclips video--he thought Yuri was sending him a message! I loved that moment, it changed so much of how I viewed the characters and the story as a whole. 💕
As for fanfiction recs, the tag 'Alternate Universe - Spies and Secret Agents' for yoi GOES SO FREACKING HARD. So many of my favourite yoi fics come from that tag, highly recommend giving a browse
ty!!! i watched yoi when it was airing but never really read too much vikturii fanfics but now i really need to read some to cope w the cancellation;; any recommendations abt any AU or tropes are welcome 🛐
Guess we're gonna have to add Ice Adolescence on the list of "Movies Cancelled but Complete That We Need to Steal". Others include the Wile E Coyote Movie that was cancelled for tax purposes, the original boards for Wish that Disney said "weren't Disney enough", and the boards for Chicken Little that were scrapped to be "more marketable and trendy"
It hurts but what really hurst is the people saying "good, now they can focus on better things" or calling it trash. Then denying the fact that yuri on ice was one of the things that put Mappa where they are now 😭
Mappa got their START from Yuri on Ice, it was their big headliner, and now they’ve decided they want nothing to do with it and will just be making shonen anime. Say you hate the gays a little louder, hm?
They love money more than anything else so even if a little gay show could make them filthy rich they'd rather do another stupid shonen anime for the billionth time even uf it gave them slightly less filthy rich
If there's something I learned from watching my favorite shows get canceled over and over, is this. If a queer piece of media is canceled for "various circumstances", it was canceled for being gay, plain and simple. Mappa should genuinely be ashamed of themselves for how they handled this. They should just sell the ip and the movie if it "doesn't bring any money". But they haven't, and if the yuri on ice event they held in December is any indication, they won't. They want the money yuri on ice brings without fulfilling their promises. Shameful.
Your second to last sentence reminded me of another example of this. The 1994 movie Interview With the Vampire. It was a hit. It did so well. And the company that held the rights wanted to continue to hold the rights, and keep profits from the VC series, but didn't want to _actually_ do anything. I thought it coincidence until this comment, but in the QOTD movie, they straightwashed Lestat to all hell. They didn't make a good movie with QOTD, they just wanted the extra profits. And on top of that, the movie is ten times straighter than IWTV ever was. And I could fight to my grave about the queer subtext between David and Marius in QOTD, but it's practically nothing and you gotta strain your eyes and brain to see it. Anyway, that's my lesser known example of this happening. Of course there are plenty of LGBT shows that get cancelled before their time or are forced to make their representation quieter. But what Warner did with the VC series really stuck out to me.
I think my comment got deleted but YT has been glitchy lately. Sorry if this is just a repeat. Your second to last sentence reminded me of another example of this. Like Yuri On Ice was literally one of the anime that saved the company from being bankrupt, and the fact that Junichi Suwabe voiced Victor and Sukuna while Victor is also being the LITERAL TEMPLATE FOR PRETTY WHITE HAIRED DUDE WITH BLUE EYES LIKE MAPPA WHY YOU GOTTA CANCEL IT MAN 😢
Yoi: ice adolescence cancelation is a huge shit pile from mappa and I totally agree with the people saying that they should just give the rights to another studio but what I want to talk about that touched me in this video was coley's experience with yoi, the fondness in her voice as she speaks about it really hammers the fact that this show touched so many people like her and you and me. That segment of coley's thoughts and feelings feel so real and it just shows the impact and power of a show and that little tidbit of her making katsudon after a good test was just so personal. Listening to that segment really struck something in my heart. It makes the show feel so alive and oh hey look this has really impacted and changed someones life even if it was a show or even if it was a small part of it, something changed and aurghhhh this is definitely just a me thing but listening to coley's thoughts bring me even closer to YOI as a whole do u get me its that sense of personhood and experience and look at this silly little show that's affected me and you and ahhhhhh What im trying to say is, YOI really meant a lot to coley and im glad she shared her experience with all of us. (thanks to anyone reading this rant lmao)
Yuri on Ice was the anime that introduced me to ice skating which became my favorite hobby and was even the one who got my love for music back. I’m sad that it was cancelled but I still hope that it’ll turn around in the future
me too, yuri on ice introduced me to ice skating and now years later im figure skating & having lessons from a professional coach. It always held a special place in my heart and this news is so heartbreaking :(
honestly, like you said, I feel like Mappa bit off more than they could chew. With the amazing animation of Jujutsu Kaisen Chainsaw Man, and Attack on Titan. It takes a lot of work for the animators to get that style to look right. not only that, but the way they’re overworking their staff and under paying them just says a lot about them as the company and honestly, I’m not surprised that this anime movie got canceled.
i remenber one chick actually put a reminder for it on her phone the firtstime the movie was told to be made (and later changed the release ffs mapa) and it was, indeed, 2016 - 2017. hope bestie is doing ok...
yuri on ice actually led me to this channel in the first place. i have vivid memories of watching your welcome to the madness reaction, as well as your “entering the yuri on ice fandom” videos back in the day that really led me to becoming an active viewer of this channel. over the years, my interests have sort of drifted and i’ve been less and less active, but the moment i heard the news i dashed back to this channel for comfort. i’m so, so upset about the cancellation of this movie. i hope that somehow, someday, we’ll get to see yuuri and victor again. in the meantime, thanks for all the years of laughter and love, coley. it’s been amazing
After getting reboots 20 years later and final seasons 10 years later, I genuinely thought we would get Ice Adolescence. Reading the news truly ruined my day, and all my coworkers had to console me that Friday.
Yuri on ice is the reason I started reading fanfics, the reason I got into a fandom for the first time and THE REASON I found my favorite story of all time. No movie, no TV series or book has ever come close to the love I have for the Rival Series. That is a fanfic I've been reading at least once a year since 2018. Man, it's even the reason I started reading in English and improved so much with this language because waiting for the Spanish translation was killing me and Victor's POV was coming to an end and I was DYING to know if Yuuri was going to forgive him. I fought so much to read that night, but I loved every second of it and now, thanks to that, I can read books and fanfics and watch videos in English with confidence. YURI ON ICE has really given me a lot of new experiences. And now this happens!! The day I woke up early in the morning to watch the Yuri on Ice concert, the moment everyone screamed when the poster appeared in rhe end... Oh...
2024 has just been hit after hit for me with my comfort media... first ofmd and now yoi??? granted yoi is less of a surprise after 7 years of waiting but the confirmation that it's actually over still hurts...
Fall 2016 was a great moment in history to be a anime fan. I actually wrote a whole YoI fanfic for my friend's birthday (not published for anyone, just for her). And to date is the only long fic I have ever finished (and will ever finish if things don't change). My friend painted me a canvas with Yura for my birthday. Yuri on Ice represents a before and after for me, but sadly I had lost hope for the movie long ago... it still hurts though...
I'm relatively new to the YOI scene (I like too much media where the 'glory days' are long gone, but alas,) and, just today right now, four YOI fics have been uploaded on Ao3 alone. Clearly, the fandom's alive, however, Mappa neglects something that is obviously wanted in favour of playing it safe. As Viktor said, "You have to do the opposite of what people expect. How else will you surprise them?"
I still remember the first time I heard that opening in high school.. it was the first anime I ever finished and it resonated with me on so many levels. I still listen to the soundtrack from time to time. You Only Live Once goes so hard imo. Sad to be hearing this news in my sophomore year of college. Gone but not forgotten. This anime will forever hold a very special place in my heart
I remember being on the bus to middle school, watching the latest Yoi episode on gogoanime at pitch black 7 am every Wednesday. I'd meet with my friend at lunch and we'd gush about the latest episode. Whether it was giggling over victuuri, fretting over Makkachin, or cursing JJ, yoi really played a big role in making my school days brighter. Sadly, newer generations won't be able to feel the same sleep-deprived thrill I did with new content. But its legacy is going to last a very very long time
I was heartbroken when i heard the news. I remember watching the episode that came out on November 29 while my father was in a 12 hour heart surgery. Since it was also Yuuri's birthday i was using all the positive energy in the fandom to keep going. It was such a comfort in a very difficult time. My friends and i would watch episodes as soon as they dropped, even in the middle of class. I will forever be a part of the fandom and hope that another studio picks up the project.
in 15:57, this was during a touring ice show called Fantasy on Ice mostly comprised of both pro-athlete skaters and top competing skaters, touring around Japan and performing their programs and group numbers. This particular one, they had Dean Fujioka, the singer to actually sing History Maker live during a group number. It was so fun seeing the resurrection of the YOI fandom when this was casually dropped in fstwt. This video was something I like to come back to as a (former?) fan of both figure skating and YOI.
I remember being devastated when I first saw this. I grew up on Yuri on Ice. I just turned 18 last month, so Ice Adolescence was first announced when I was like 11.
YO REAL, My 18 birthday was at the start of April, and I remember watching YOI in middle school and talking about it with my friend who also loved it and had Victor’s jacket
I remember the day Welcome To The Madness dropped on the internet. My senior year of high school. My best friend sent it to me though tumblr while I was in the middle of math class and I was so excited I could barely contain myself and practically teleported back home to watch it. Ah, memories! the fandom was in complete chaos for about a month strait! And don't even get me started on all the yurio cosplayers! They started working on their pink jackets with a quickness! i think the first completed one popped up only a week later!
I was hooked with Yuri on Ice not because of ice skating or the relationship. It was the piano. And as a pianist, it hooked and introduced me to the rest of the show ^-^ but the hiatus was too long I honestly gave up ... its too long of a hiatus.. and LGBTQ topics is a grey area in Japan, like look at all the Yaoi and shounen-ai manga produced, its like they like it but a hidden secret. Maybe they just didn't want to get cancelled :/
One of my favorite fics is Saltwater Melodies! Its an H2O: Just Add Water crossover where Yuri P., Viktor, and Mila are Mermaids and really into music and i just- ugh. Its such a soft, comfy spot for me.
Probably because a while back, maybe a couple years, there was a mass purge on Etsy with copyright claims on YOI merch. I had a couple enamel pins listed that got taken down, and the YOI listings were really sparse after that.
I first watched YOI in late 2020 having heard the hype from some of my online friends. And mind you, that was only a year after I found out I was queer. So I was still brand new to queer content. But YOI was so eye opening to me. It was like a coming of age for me personally and discovering that being queer was okay and not “weird” and that it was beautiful. And it was my first time rooting for characters of the same gender since I’ve grown up in such a homophobic environment. That anime means SOOOO much to me and it was there for me as a comfort. Knowing all these years we had a chance at more content only for them to cancel just destroyed me. The fandom is like a family. We all make art and fics about our love for it and we’re all here for each other like a traumatized book club. I’m honestly so sad about the canon end but the fanon story will never end. We were born to make history and we will continue to do so. I REALLY hope they give it to another studio so that we can get fed because there’s so much potential just like you said 😭
i just find it crazy they cancelled it after THIS LONG!! i wouldn’t mind a cancellation eariler on but having fans wait years and years for something that will just never happen is horrible to the fans, especially since there is nothing else for them to enjoy besides rewatching the show for the 1000th time and sobbing (which i done numerous times already). not only to fans that this is heartbreaking but to those who legit worked on this project, putting all the time into this and probably got treated terribly just for mappa to be like “yeah nah lets scrap this..”
I am very disappointed at the announcement but instead of mourning what could have been, I would like to reminice everything Yuri in Ice gave me. When Yuri on Ice came out I was a freshman in highschool and I was incredibly lonely. One day while I was watching an episode I had downloaded into my phone during lunch break, a quite girl who I had never seen speak to anyone came up to me to gush about the anime. That day I made my first high school friend. We are best friends to this day. I remember watching the new episodes during our commute to school at 6 am because we were too excited to wait. I would rewatch the episodes when I got back home and my grandpa would prepare a snack for me. Last year he passed away and before the announcement of the cancelation I had totally forgotten about this memory. Yuri on Ice means so much to me on a personal level as it also got me into figure skating which became a passion. I am so grateful for this silly anime about skating for the amazing memories it gave me❤
What really pisses me off is that Ice Ado really had potential. Besides the fact that I was looking forward to Yuri on Ice for a long time because I love figure skating, after it was done airing Cinemark got the rights to showcase the whole series on their cinemas in my country. I went with my friends since we are all big fans and it had multiple showdates that took nearly all day and they were SOLD.OUT. Completely sold out, for all the dates and times. And that's on the other side of the world from Japan, so it's staggering that MAPPA has chosen to forsake the fanbase that made it popular in the first place. It was a long run studio, but Yuri on Ice was its breakthrough in the industry and what made it possible for them to even consider getting the IPs they do now.
Yuri On Ice was the anime that made my mother begin watching anime with me, I watched it with my current partner(neither of us realised we’d been in the fandom since the show’s release because we were middle schoolers and had no concept of fandom yet) and we’re going to a con later this years as our favourite characters so like- This show means an ungodly amount to me and seeing it dumped so unceremoniously makes me cry
I was also in uni when YRI on ice was coming out. I remember that it really helped me to connect with new people in my life, became the glue we needed to stick together through the first few awkward moment of new friendships in a new environment. Me and my friend used to cram together in front of a small laptop in the library and share headphones to watch the new episode as soon as it was available. That friend was also the first person I came out to, so somehow this anime was helping my in that too.
Here you go ppl, two of my most fav YOI ao3 fanfics - by proantagonist: "Winter Song" (that narrates the canon storyline but with a lot of story in-between each major event covered by the anime, more like an elaborate version of what could have happened in all the time they spent together throughout that whole time and how their relationship gradually grew to what we see on the anime) and "Falling (Victor's Story)" (the whole thing from Victor's POV and a bit of his past how the author imagined it, chef's kiss). Thank me later!
When I heard the news I spent a while fuming and then went to read fics and play the soundtrack at stupidly high volume. I kind of expected it to just never happen because I’ve been taking so long, but I’m still heartbroken.
I'm one of those people that definitely knew that nothing was gonna come of all this after a few years of waiting, but still held a speck of hope deep down smh. I also agree that the fandom consisting highly of AFAB/queer people, and the show *itself* being so obviously queer at points, played a huge role in its shelving. It's tragically common for marginalized audiences to be the backbone for projects only for companies to abandon ship (ha!) for opportunities to "cast a wider net". You hear about this in regards to shoujo anime too. While i didn't participate directly in fandom spaces during the show's peak, it was still such an important part of 2016-17 for me. I was going through a Rough period in those years; watching the show, reading discussions, and crying over Yuuri/Victuri and other characters gave me something to look forward to when I spent most of that time being miserable. Not to mention there were SO. MANY. GOOD. FANFICS. I almost wanna go back and find some, for old times' sake c':
3:40 i saw in the website Wayback Machine that they actually removed Ice Adolescence from MAPPA's website in 2019, when it was postponed... i believe they already knew they wouldn't do the movie since then. there's some japanese people trying to defend MAPPA saying that it's because of Russo-Ukrainian War but i doubt it, the teaser is from 2019, they stopped posting on YOI instagram and facebook in 2019... the war started after that and it's not like the movie woulb be like "wowww russian skater i love russia and Putin" LOLL it was just a movie abut a russian skater well, i am obsessed with yuri on ice since i watched it in 2020 and i really hope i get to see it again someday somehow, but this would be really difficult 😥 and english is not my first language so i hope i wrote it right
At the time, we thought it was delayed because of COVID and the other projects which came before it had also been delayed. Like how attack on titan season four came out in so many parts.
Respectfully, can’t stand people who go like “you were waiting for this thing that was promised? Why?” Don’t know man. Maybe it’s the autism. Maybe it’s me being hopeful. It’s already really annoying being disappointed, but it would be cool if other fans didn’t act like they were above it or surprised when it turns out that people still cared.
This anime helped me get out of my comfort zone and make new friends, and I met my two best friends through this show and they have been my rock ever since I met them. Yuri On Ice!! was also my comfort anime while I was struggling with school and coming to terms with my sexuality, and my life wouldn't be the same without it. All in all, I'm grateful that this show exists and I'm glad that I'm able to revisit it every now and then. Hopefully (wishful thinking) we can get some type of content in the future.
Thank you for making a video on it. This is sad news in a lot of ways. I'm hoping the crew and creators that worked on the movie got fairly paid for their labour and also that they were not keeping them in the dark, postponing the project. YOI is an incredible story about life, friendships, love and growth. With unique characters and a great theme. It brought me a lot of happiness. Seeing the manga or a S2 would be a dream but there's also a lot of cool fandom content.
I met one of my best friends through one of your Yuri on Ice reaction videos. So while I'll be forever sad that we didn't get this movie, I'm still grateful for your channel and for this dear friend that I found through it. Just wanted to share this - and now please excuse me, I need to go and cry about Ice Adolescence. Damn this really hits home :')
Why would a studio cancel a movie that already started production from a VERY POPULAR ANIME THAT HAS SOO MANY ROYAL FANS!???!!!? LIKE WHY??? DO THEY HATE MONEY OR SOMETHING????!??!
I remember recommending the show to a friend of mine after reading the sinopsis and watching some shots.Months later she recommended it to me back because she forgot that I did it first. A staple of my high school years. Is really sad that the movie won’t come out, but hopefully we will see more of it in the future
Yuri On Ice was airing when I was in middle school, and I remember a lot of my female peers who didn’t watch anime talk about how much they loved the show. I was certainly intrigued about a show that could get non-anime fans that excited, and decided to watch it myself. I have a lot of fond memories relating to Yuri On Ice, and all we can do is hope Ice Adolescence gets picked up by someone else who isn’t afraid to take risks.
The Russia issue should be talked about too. Between the war and the Olympics scandal Russia is a sticky subject, and there is no way of telling Viktor' story without basically promoting Russia
I already made peace with myself that the movie is cancelled before the announcement when the grapevine of the poster being removed from MAPPA's website. But man, it hurts knowing that I went bankrupt by joinig a YOI merch split group for Yurio's merchs back in 2017
I was in my first year of college, I was al alone, my family was in another country and a friend introduced me to Yuri on ice. It was such a good feeling. We should all honor Yuri on Ice by remembering what it brought us 🙏
I remember being in class reading a fanfic on AO3 where the author was posting weekly and the week prior to the ring episode airing they had yuuri and viktor propose and essentially went “ha, top that mappa” AND THEN MAPPA DID. I had to try so hard not to bust out laughing in the middle of class 😂
Being a part of the YOI community as it was first airing was such an amazing experience! I highly doubt I’ll ever get anything like it again. Although I doubt it at this point, I hope we still get another season-or that the rights will be sold to people who actually care. I can believe any of the speculations being the reasons, too. This is so unfair.
I first watched Yuri On Ice in the summer of 2017 when I was 11 and it got me back into anime after not watching for years. After I half forced my best friend to watch it, she also got into anime. My mothers ringtone since 2018 has been History Maker and It still brings a smile to my face when I hear it. It's hard to overstate how much this joy this series has brought me and I don't think that I am alone in that regard. This isn't the death a series that literally shaped history deserves. This series deserved to go out with dignity, in its own time. Not with a cancelation given years too late. I hope a someone can revive it to give it a second life fitting it's legacy If you want a great Yuri On Ice fic, check out "eternity will be born from hope" on AO3, it's currently getting rewritten so it's a good time to check it out!
I had just moved to Japan as YOI was airing. This anime is so special to me because it reminds me of that time of my life. I did my YOI pilgrimage in Saga and so many locals welcomed fans with open arms. I would have never discovered the beautiful place otherwise. Side note: your hair reminds me of Komi from Komi can’t Communicate. So cute! I can imagine the cat ears
YURI!!! ON FIC RECS! For those new to the fandom or just looking to reread old favorites, have my top 10 favorite Yuri!!! On Ice fic recs, to date. In no particular order. Back then, I was really hyped to see the movie. But as time goes by, no news was released that I completely forgot about that. But seeing it being cancelled officially breaks my heart as a Yuri on ice fan. However, I’m still glad that they cancelled the production since I am worried about the employees in MAPPA.
Yuri on Ice was one of those shows I heard about through the grapevine while I was watching “Free!”, and thought oh sure I’ll give it a shot. Cut to me two days later after finishing my binge of it sobbing in bed because my emotions were running rampant. The opening and closing themes alone are enough to make me misty eyed to this day. I am not too big into sports anime but YOI hits different. Even after my hyper fixation on it ended, I still revisited it when I was going through rough spots because it was one of my big comfort shows. The news of Ice Adolescence getting cancelled absolutely broke my heart, I’m still not over it honestly.
God this whole situation sucks, part of me was waiting for this because i wanted the staff to be able to move on but seeing it was still such a slap in the face. I remember watching it as it aired and it was such a huge sensation. The weekly discussions, the memes, everyone looping History Maker, the insane explosion when episodes 7 and 10 aired. It was such a crazy time to be an anime fan and it was such a special show, i know many people who came out/had their queer awakening because of this show and it still resonates with them to this day. Wether it was because of Mappas shitty practices of taking on too many projects/pivoting to only shounen, homophobia (which i very much buy, both because of the Banana Fish directors recent Mappa project being signficantly less gay than her other shows and statments from Jessie James Grelle (Yuri Ks EN VA) that she wasnt allowed to state if Victor and Yuri were married), real world politics (the Russian Doping scandal got really mainstream during the 2018 Olympics so maybe they were afraid of releasing something heavily focused on the Russian skating scene) or even if it wasnt entirely Mappas fault (ive seen a lot of people blaming Avex too since theyre the main producer) its still a shitty situation and the movie shouldnt have become lost media. At least we can keep the show with us, and i wish the staff the best of luck in the future. (especially Sayo Yamamoto, please watch her other works like Michiko & Hatchin and The Woman Called Fujiko Mine and i hope she gets to work on something instead of getting screwed over after her popular work like other female directors) also i totally believe the conspiracy theory that Mappa remembered to publicize the cancellation because of the Duolingo parody, the timing was too eerie
Rip Yuri on Ice I can't believe I never watched you after all these years. But do you know who else is dead? Arthur Pendragon On an unrelated note, you should totally make a video about BBC Merlin

yoi had helped me to go through some really dark stuff in my life so I'm really sad knowing the movie was cancelled. I'm better now so it's not like I'm suicidal again bc after all the show itself is over and yuri and victor are together and happy so that's all that matters. im just a little bit heartbroken as well as others
Honestly I think the current economic downfall in Japan right now is going to continue the old trend of only animating well performing shows, and avoiding shojo or BL altogether, or only developing those shows with poor quality. Siiiiiigh.
"release the footage, ill finish it myself" actually... bro kinda cooking... entire fandom coming together to make it happen whether mappa likes it or not WHEN???
The fact that the movie was cancelled honestly didn't hit me until now. Like I was OBSESSED with YOI I remember my friends always getting a laugh about how over the moon I was about it. I remember screaming, crying, being so overjoyed and in love with the fandom and just the overall experience. I bought Mizuno shoes because it was the brand that Yuri wore. Watching this video reignited that love but then broke my heart when the reality of Ice Adolescence being cancelled. I really hope another studio does pick it up, I would love to finally hear Viktor's story.
There are basically no happy ending stories for queer people in anime and I though YOI was going to be it! The one anime I could cling to for a wholesome romance that represented me even a little bit. I’m devastated.
I saw some people saying the Russia/Ukraine conflict might have impacted the choice, as depicting Viktor, a Russian skater, could be "too politic" for the studio.
I hate MAPPA so much right now. I wonder if it's really a possibility for them to sell the rights to other studio that actually cares about the fans...
Legit heartbroken... did not keep up with fandom for the last few years but Yuri On Ice was very fricken important during one my hardest years, it was one of the few things that brought me honest joy and motivated me to get out of bed... I watched it with friends who couldn't care less about anime, watched it with friends who enjoyed anime and even watched some with my parents... I DRESSED UP FOR THE FINALE FOR GOODNESS SAKE EVEN IF I WAS JUST GONNA WATCH IT ALONE AT MY HOUSE. Dear god, I'm just gonna grab my Yuri K. ninderoid, pop in the blue ray and wallow in silence during my next day off.
My best friend was the one who introduced it to me. As someone who has a hard time focusing, we watched the dub together and it was so much fun and such a bonding experience for us! We were freshman/sophomores in high school and it was something that we fell in love with together. And then she told me about the movie and I was so excited. So learning that the movie was officially cancelled has broke my heart. I STILL go back and watch the anime. I wish we could have more content because that anime was and still is so important to me
(disclaimer: I fully understand that "it's because it's gay" is a speculation) boy don't you love it when Gorefest 3000 The Anime is more family friendly than two guys kissing
I hope Kubo and Yamamoto can manage to get all the rights and make at least a manga with the original story they wanted to tell. It wouldn't be the movie that we were promised but it would mean the world for so many people
Genuinely surprised Russia wasn’t mentioned. That seems to be the running theory for the Japanese fans. Could be box office poison for them to have a film set in Russia or to portray Russian characters positively, since everyone hates them right now
i'm not even lying.....legit started crying when i saw this....yoi has such a big space in my heart which will now forever leave a hole behind........seriously....i dont even want to watch any mappa shows anymore .....no matter how much i love jjk ....this has seriously shattered my heart......shame on u mappa for making us wait for YEARS then giving us this...shame on you.
A lot of Japanese fans have speculated that the movie was cancelled due to the war between Russia and Ukraine and that it would be problematic considering the movie was supposed to be about Victor - a Russian man and his teen life. This frustrates me because the movie was announced back in 2017. It must’ve had something to do with the working conditions at Mappa and them not wanting to be associated with the show anymore.

mappa are you really not going to reveal at least ONE of the "various circumstances" to the fans who have been waiting for SEVEN years
Didn't they? There was a screenshot in this video where one of the creators was asked why it was cancelled and they said it was because it wasnt profitable.
COVID
I think the real reason it got cancelled is because Russia decided to invade Ukraine.
Insane that there are entire animated and voiced sections of this that'll never see the light of day.

@Ekraelum there are viable animated, storyboarded and voice acted parts, seeing the few hints that we did get. so why not?
@@lovelylynx5473 I mean perhaps there is some fully animated material, but when it comes to things like these, especially considering the kind of studio that MAPPA is, it's better to not assume as a fact that production went too far. I personally wouldn't be surprised if it did (it's MAPPA, overwork is their business), but only they know at the end of the day
My villain arc is manifesting ever since Mappa made this statement
AHABHBSDHAHA SAME
Why would Mappa do this. To be honest, I wouldn’t have mind the cancellation if it had been confirmed earlier. Like, 4 years? That’s just stabbing fans heart..
Right? :(
I've waited SO LONG only to hear this. -_-
None of us really believed the movie would happen after so long, but still held out hope. Now it's dead.
i believed....>.

No laughter, I think it’s awesome it brought that to light for you! This is why representation matters. Gutted that it’s cancelled now 😔
Bro Yuri on ice was in a similar boat for me as well.

They love money more than anything else so even if a little gay show could make them filthy rich they'd rather do another stupid shonen anime for the billionth time even uf it gave them slightly less filthy rich
don't water down the definition of homophobia by calling something "homophobia" if you don't know the circumstances.

It makes the show feel so alive and oh hey look this has really impacted and changed someones life even if it was a show or even if it was a small part of it, something changed and aurghhhh this is definitely just a me thing but listening to coley's thoughts bring me even closer to YOI as a whole do u get me its that sense of personhood and experience and look at this silly little show that's affected me and you and ahhhhhh

honestly, like you said, I feel like Mappa bit off more than they could chew. With the amazing animation of Jujutsu Kaisen Chainsaw Man, and Attack on Titan. It takes a lot of work for the animators to get that style to look right. not only that, but the way they’re overworking their staff and under paying them just says a lot about them as the company and honestly, I’m not surprised that this anime movie got canceled.

yuri on ice actually led me to this channel in the first place. i have vivid memories of watching your welcome to the madness reaction, as well as your “entering the yuri on ice fandom” videos back in the day that really led me to becoming an active viewer of this channel. over the years, my interests have sort of drifted and i’ve been less and less active, but the moment i heard the news i dashed back to this channel for comfort. i’m so, so upset about the cancellation of this movie. i hope that somehow, someday, we’ll get to see yuuri and victor again. in the meantime, thanks for all the years of laughter and love, coley. it’s been amazing

But its legacy is going to last a very very long time
the costco wine is so real
I found out the news a few days ago… my best friend & I are still devastated 🥲 Yuri on Ice was the very first anime we watched together
Yuri on Ice is still one of my favorite shows of all time, and it breaks my heart that new content will probably never exist.
The yoi sheet music is still one of my most treasured collections I own! No other anime song has moved me quite like yuri on ice while playing it
oh my goodness the Yuri on Ice piece is just breathtaking, i aspire to play it one day
The sheet music of yoi is honestly beautiful
Everything went wrong when Yuri on Ice sweeped on the Crunchyroll Awards.
One of my favorite fics is Saltwater Melodies! Its an H2O: Just Add Water crossover where Yuri P., Viktor, and Mila are Mermaids and really into music and i just- ugh. Its such a soft, comfy spot for me.
OMG H2O WAS MY CHILDHOOD I NEED TO READ THIS RN
I had a left over Etsy gift card and decided to buy myself a YOI mug- it’s kinda hard now to find fanmade merch but I’m glad it was still there!
Probably because a while back, maybe a couple years, there was a mass purge on Etsy with copyright claims on YOI merch. I had a couple enamel pins listed that got taken down, and the YOI listings were really sparse after that.
i was in middle school when yoi was airing. im about to finish college now. i am so, so disappointed and sad.
I am so grateful for this silly anime about skating for the amazing memories it gave me❤
That’s so fucking awesome!!!!
Yuri On Ice was the anime that made my mother begin watching anime with me, I watched it with my current partner(neither of us realised we’d been in the fandom since the show’s release because we were middle schoolers and had no concept of fandom yet) and we’re going to a con later this years as our favourite characters so like-
This show means an ungodly amount to me and seeing it dumped so unceremoniously makes me cry
I’m sorry
Do it!!
3:40 i saw in the website Wayback Machine that they actually removed Ice Adolescence from MAPPA's website in 2019, when it was postponed... i believe they already knew they wouldn't do the movie since then.
there's some japanese people trying to defend MAPPA saying that it's because of Russo-Ukrainian War but i doubt it, the teaser is from 2019, they stopped posting on YOI instagram and facebook in 2019... the war started after that and it's not like the movie woulb be like "wowww russian skater i love russia and Putin" LOLL it was just a movie abut a russian skater
well, i am obsessed with yuri on ice since i watched it in 2020 and i really hope i get to see it again someday somehow, but this would be really difficult 😥
and english is not my first language so i hope i wrote it right
oh and I hope Sayo Yamamoto and Kubo are ok, specially Sayo because she didn't work in anything since then
@@_mariana2411_Lo escribiste perfectamente ❤
it was a long awaited announcement.. i can’t actually believe ppl were waiting on this. i love yoi but post 2020 ik nothing was going to happen
At the time, we thought it was delayed because of COVID and the other projects which came before it had also been delayed. Like how attack on titan season four came out in so many parts.
realllll... definitely wasn't expecting any continuation after a year or two
Durarara had 3 seasons 5 years apart each. I shall also bring up Bleach, for which we waited 10 years. So the long fiatus is not an excuse
good for you. But the rest of us were waiting and hopeful
I really hope this show can get sold to one of the other companies they were working with so it can get released eventually like Nimona.
omg please
I still dream with Netflix getting YOI rights and giving fans what we deserve! Let's campaign for Netflix to save us all!!!
I have issues with Netflix, but they did save Nimona so if anyone can save YOI, it's them
Why would a studio cancel a movie that already started production from a VERY POPULAR ANIME THAT HAS SOO MANY ROYAL FANS!???!!!?
Yuri on ice is alive in my heart and always will be.
Mappa better sleep with one eye open.
I was waiting for coley's take on it.
The Russia issue should be talked about too. Between the war and the Olympics scandal Russia is a sticky subject, and there is no way of telling Viktor' story without basically promoting Russia
Haven’t even seen Yuri on ice but long time subscriber: when the news came out, my first thought was “Aw, poor Colely😢”
I hope a someone can revive it to give it a second life fitting it's legacy
If you want a great Yuri On Ice fic, check out "eternity will be born from hope" on AO3, it's currently getting rewritten so it's a good time to check it out!

At this point Mappa should just sell YOI to Studio Deen. They're making Tadaima Okaeri so clearly they don't have a problem with BL
(especially Sayo Yamamoto, please watch her other works like Michiko & Hatchin and The Woman Called Fujiko Mine and i hope she gets to work on something instead of getting screwed over after her popular work like other female directors)
also i totally believe the conspiracy theory that Mappa remembered to publicize the cancellation because of the Duolingo parody, the timing was too eerie
Finding this out right in the middle of the Hades 2 technical test hype was truly a We’re So Back, It’s So Over moment
Rip Yuri on Ice I can't believe I never watched you after all these years.
But do you know who else is dead?
Arthur Pendragon
On an unrelated note, you should totally make a video about BBC Merlin

ah well, if they end it well, i probably can cope. i guess i'll continue the series then
yoi had helped me to go through some really dark stuff in my life so I'm really sad knowing the movie was cancelled.
Siiiiiigh.
Maaan my heart is broken
I remember finding your channel through your YOI reactions and rewatching them while waiting for the movie :(
"release the footage, ill finish it myself" actually... bro kinda cooking... entire fandom coming together to make it happen whether mappa likes it or not WHEN???
I wish we could have more content because that anime was and still is so important to me
(disclaimer: I fully understand that "it's because it's gay" is a speculation)
boy don't you love it when Gorefest 3000 The Anime is more family friendly than two guys kissing
Could be box office poison for them to have a film set in Russia or to portray Russian characters positively, since everyone hates them right now
Man people's passion for this anime is honestly so inspiring maybe ill finally get around to watching it 😭
i'm not even lying.....legit started crying when i saw this....yoi has such a big space in my heart which will now forever leave a hole behind........seriously....i dont even want to watch any mappa shows anymore .....no matter how much i love jjk ....this has seriously shattered my heart......shame on u mappa for making us wait for YEARS then giving us this...shame on you.
Yeah no, as you said they were squandering yuri on ices potential way before that conflict .
Read again what you wrote. Homophobia seems more believable than this. They put this movie in abandonment since 2020, c'mon.
