It’s crazy how this is nothing like the final game! Wonder what made them completely change it eventually. One thing is for sure: was a good decision since the game was my childhood.

Hello! If you check out the discussion video, I theorize that the amount of time it would have taken to properly debug and sync the FMV, the hit boxes, the enemies, and the items would have been too much. I don't know if it shows in this Let's Play, but there were times when Scooby and Shaggy themselves would get stuck in each other, unable to separate. Considering they only had 1 year to get out the actually released PS2 version, it was more than likely a "Cut our losses" decision and get the next-gen one out before the license ran out. Welcome to the channel!

I feel like that first Western level inspired Weird Wild West in Mystery Mayhem. Also, seems they really liked Mystic Manor since it became the hub world eventually. Note the gazebo, which was shown in concept art in the Monster Gallery.

I think I just realized what the blank circle at the bottom left is for. You know how in each of the cutscenes, each monster gets defeated by an item or something related to it? For example, the Creeper gets defeated by Ketchup, and this is unrelated, but the flowers were to activate the guard cutscene in thee inaccessible Wax Museum. Back to the related, I theorize the number next to them means how many times you need to lap. For the Headless Specter, example, it's 3 times before you can defeat it. The circle on the left would most likely be for the defeat item, if applicable. For instance, you'd need to lap, find a bottle of Ketchup, and then if you meet the requirements, the defeat cutscene plays (Iron Face slipping off the plank, the Creeper screaming and running away, the Headless Specter getting run over, and the Snow Ghost melting). Or, since a number is by the item as well, it's possible that you would lap a certain amount of times, grab the item, and the monster is defeated immediately afterwards, probably when you reach the Mystery Machine or as soon as you grab the monster's respective item. And the magnet you mentioned appearing? In the defeat cutscene for Charlie the Haunted Robot in the amusement park, Shaggy uses none other than a magnet to short-circuit it, causing it to explode.
EDIT: Another example would be the bone for the unimplemented Wax Museum level (which probably would have been right before the city level, due to the city level presumably containing the final key, or maybe even inside the city level, who knows), where the bone distracts the evil Ghost Dog. A portrait for this item is even inside the code.

A noble wish, but the chances of the original source code still being around - as well as the licensing for the Scooby assets - would probably negate that possibility of it.

Pretending that the real game we got never existed, and therefore hypothetically having nothing to compare this to-
This could have been a pretty solid release for the PS1 and I could see myself looking back on it fondly. But only if the real one never existed. Because that blows this poopy, framey nightmare out of the water.

    • @GameRaveTV
      @GameRaveTV  Год назад +3

Well, it was still in production and not properly optimized.I mean, even level FMV segments are missing. I'm sure it would have been a bit more polished had it actually come out.
What's interesting is I burned it to an disc to play on real hardware - someone who was using an emulator had different enemy patterns and some items worked for him that didn't for me. Just shows how not-finalized the code really was.

Hey, here's another thing: I was able to get Old Iron Face's cutscene to activate in Mystic Manor. It seems he only appears AFTER you activate the specific cutscene, meaning this game does have "special" monsters of some kind. I was able to remove him from the field, but that didn't activate his defeat cutscene. Maybe that's an alternate path to find yet another Clue Scroll? By going down the alternate path with the winding stairs, that's how I activated his cutscene. There's an item on that path (maybe a Clue Scroll?) I didn't see that cutscene in your playthrough, so I thought I would let you know. With this in mind, I'll bet you can activate the other monster cutscenes as well somehow, although I'll have to play those worlds more to find out (aside from level 4, for obvious reasons)!

    • @GameRaveTV
      @GameRaveTV  2 года назад +2

The circular stairwell crashed every time for me. A monster that would pop out at the last second would always ding just as I hit the third or fourth stair. I know one scroll in the winter cabin stage didn't appear until I had made my second pass at it, so there may be timers involved.
Keep up the great work! :D

Okay, so I went through the video and did my best to spot every ghost/monster cut from the game. It would be great if you were to upload a little slideshow showing off all the character models so we could identify them better.
So, in order of appearance, I saw:
    Ghost of Elias Kingston
(Unidentified Ghost that comes out of painting, can't really get a good look at it)
    Miner 49er
    Beast of Bottomless Lake
Redcoat Ghost (Which I initially mistook for a KKK member, lol)
Hooded Man on a Unicycle, (Maybe from the Dynamic Scooby Doo Affair?)
    Ghost of Paul Revere
    Minuteman Ghost
    Ghost of Finnyan MacDuff
    Ghost of the Great Haldane
A Brownish/Red Monster I can't identify and doesn't match any Scooby monster I can find
    Ghost of King Katazuma
    Old Iron Face
Madame Olga (Weird because she was a real witch from the Scrappy era)
    Vanilla Technicolor Phantom (Maybe?)
    Ozark Witch McCoy
    Night Ghoul of London
    Snow Ghost
    Owlman
Zen Tuo (Maybe? He's green for some reason, maybe they hadn't added all the color yet)
10,000 Volt Ghost (Maybe? Its got black hair at the back and pants)
A Tiger (Possibly from the Scooby/Scrappy episode Scooby Dooby Guru)
Some Dude in a Fez (?)
    Moon Monster
    Ape Man
    Ghost of Dr. Coffin
Alien (Surprisingly it's from Scooby Doo and the Alien Invaders, which was the most recent of the dtv movies at the time)
And the wax museum at end has The Haunted Horseman, the Wax Phantom, a Viking Ghost and a Dragon. So overall there were a lot of enemies that didn't make the final cut of the game, which is a shame but it looks like this would have been much worse than the final game.

@@GameRaveTV Thanks, from those I can make out the Ghost Clown, Gator Ghoul, the Star Creature, the Demon Shark, the Ramblin Football Ghost, Redbeard's henchmen, the Viking Ghost, the Futuristic Monster, the Chinese Zombie aka Scare Pair, the Ghostly Gondolier (maybe), the Phantom Racer, Moat Monster (Giant Frog), an Arabian Magician, Aztec Statue, Talking Cow, the Willawa, Fireball McFain, The Mantis (Maybe?), Some old guy who may be Phantom of Milo Booth or Ghost of Jeremiah Pratt or Specter of Ebenezer Crabbe, plus a few others I can't make out too good (some green thing, a fish-looking thing, a woman with blue skin and a white head piece with a red dot in the center?) and on tcrf I think the Robot Gunslinger and maybe the Vulture from the New Scooby Doo Movies are there as well.
Also, upon further inspection I think that maybe the weird red/brown ghost was supposed to be Mamba Wamba, but I really can't be sure.
Man, I can only assume that they originally intended to live up to the title and have 100 monsters from across the series, but had to narrow it down to 20 for the final game. If there's ever a remake I hope they include these guys.

I looked through the villain gallery on Scooby Addicts and it doesn't really match up with any of them. Your guess is as good as mine.

@@superultimatexlrfire462 It's possible to find potentially more cinemas using a file extractor. I know of two instances where the hint scrolls could be picked up, but nothing would trigger. I was able to have a 3rd one that did this finally trigger the video playback by replaying the stage three times. There's definitely something weird going on with what is stored and how it's stored to the console's memory; the opening cinematic and even the diner intro would either play on first boot, or never show unless you hard reset and then finally play.
I'd be willing to bet someone with better GameShark hacking skill than mine (which would be....any level....really) could find a way to at least visually unlock the items once they have the flower item in the last stage.
