The one thing I forgot to mention in our review of the gear we carry for a trailside POTA activation is a handheld VHF transciever for local coomunications. I always carry an HT on the waistband of my pack when out in the wilderness; specifically for me, I carry either a Yaesu FT-60 or a Yaesu FT3DR, depending on the weather forecast.

Thanks ... I just looked up the specs on the FX-4CR ... pretty impressive ... did you have to wait long to get it?

Wow … I just checked out the POTA 20 … those are some impressive specs … packs down to 17” and weighs less than a pound AND less than a $100

Fantastic portable kit. Agree , carry 2 antennas . There have been times depending on the summit terrain I needed an AX-1 bc there was no room for a dipole or efhw. Same here , always have an HT. I also carry an Garmin InReach due to no cell phone reception or HT can’t hit a repeater. Thanks for sharing your gear.

Thanks Dugbo ... Ronnie normally carries a Garmin just in case ... I need to try a SOTA activation with my HT one day!

Consider getting the search & rescue insurance they offer ($40/yr). If you need to be rescued especially with a helicopter, it will pay whereas a lot of health insurance will not.

I have the 100 watt version of Tim’s EFHW antenna. It performs better than expected! I use it as an Inverted V with the Explorer POTA20. It is super light and only 17” collapsed.

Great antennas from a good dude ... I definitely need to check out the POTA20!

Thanks for the suggestion ... I think Ronnie has that but I will have to double-check!
