Just switch everything to XT plugs and use Gens Ace/Tattu battery's and charger. They have recently came out with smart tech battery's and chargers, makin it super simple than it already is to use. And they also support RC more than any other battery company.
i use XT60 for years. i won a 3s 5000mAh lipo and now i use it with a small charger to charge my small (650mAh) lipos during the courses when i'm in a competition.
I started using the Tamiya plug some 25 years ago but once I got back into the rc hoppy I first used EC5 since I was building a monster truck, these days I run XT60 except for the big truck that still have EC5, bit truck need big connector right ;) XT60 is just like you say the most common and I usually have more batteries with me than I need so I can lend to someone who might run out, I also carry adaptors for deans and Traxxas to XT60 and a few extra velcro straps in case they're needed to secure the batteries :)
I’m still using my hyperion eos0606i from around 2008-9. Thing has always just worked perfect. Most my fleet is deans but I’m tired of a new charge plug coming out every few years. Next I’m just going to change all my stuff to 4mm or 5mm bullet plugs. Changing a fleet of 30+ over stinks. And then you’ll go to get one out after a few years and it didn’t get changed over and you have to use an adapter or change it then. I have a great solder station and boxes of organized plugs, leads, heat shrink, and misc rc electronics stuff.
Thanks for the clarity! I hope more people learn how to charge batteries, I see other super popular youtubers charging batteries as fast as possible, and then complaining for some battery brands for not being stable...
I use JST PH 2.0 for my normal 2S Micro Scale, XT30 for my 3S 24th Scale, XT60 for my normal 1/10, and my larger scale rigs have XT90s. The only exception is when I buy spectrum smart batteries. I keep those stock for the sensored wire!
I have bashers, but I really enjoy your vids. My 1/12 scale has been converted to xt60 and most of my ⅛ & ⅒ scales came with xt90 or IC5 connectors. Been changing all of my larger capacity lipos over to IC5, EC5, & even SC5 connectors. I don't like how melty the EC5 connectors are or even popping them out of the blue plastic to solder them.
I'm still on Deans, though don't tend to change plugs, I'll use an adaptor that also has a JST flyoff to power a servo or lights etc which works perfectly for me. Only problem I've had is some cheap deans adaptors get very loose. If I was starting out now I'd probably go xt60.
Ran Deans when I first started because my local hobby shop guy is “old skool”. After getting into comp crawling everything got switched to xt60 like everyone else is running. Like h said it’s nice to always have back up borrowing a battery from a buddy if needed
There was a company that I think was the first to make a batter/charger combo that charged at 2C or more through the balance leads. I forgot the name of it, but I think I still have the charger somewhere in the basement. I wish they kept going and focused on more cells instead of the 2S packs they offered. Another great video John, thank you.
I use deans and xt60 for larger rcs and xt30 and jst for micro crawlers. I learned I don't like xt30, I ruined an esc plugging one in backwards and even though it didn't fit it got close enough to arc.
Used to run Deans for 2 years, then switched to xt60, but made a couple of deans adapters in case of help for some of my friends. Thats all we have here: deans or xt60 👍🙂 I remember traxxas connectors (which are regular discharge, 2 wire) and they were sooo comfy in hands when plugin and unplugin 🤭👍
slowly converting everything to XT-90s - the anti-spark is nice! Might be over kill for some rigs, but it's nice having all of my rigs and batteries with the same connectors.
I started out with deans. Still have a few. I moved most to xt60 when I got a good solder station. I had a couple ic3, but the batteries were damaged by getting wet. So I don’t use those either.
I’m a deans on lipo and Tamiya plug on nimh guy. I do have a few ec3’s and a couple jst’s but i either use an adapter or they’re vehicle specific. We only have 1 trx plug on Grayson’s Bigfoot with the 12 turn Holmes 550 in it.
@@HolmesHobbies people complain about the deans plugs sparking when you connect them. Well in my opinion they all spark you just don’t see it because xt’s or ec’s or ic’s are inside the plastic housing. And we all know Tamiya plugs suck lol
Ended up using a deans in my redcat, and an xt60 in my axial. Never had any issues with either. Of course I'm using the xt 60 because that's what comes on the new crawl master 😂. Which btw everytime I drive that truck im amazed at how quiet and smooth it is.
Long time Dean plug user here, I avoid and infrastructure type setups, I have a nice dual charger with a similar plug layout as your charger you show plugged upI even swapped the IC5 my Arrma Big Rock for a deans to match my Ovonic Lipos
I run deans on everything but just bought a bundle of xt60 plugs. Working up the courage to change 10 rc connectors and 11 battery connectors 😂. Can you do a shop tour of the rigs at some point? I’m listening to your videos but staring behind you lol
I have a smasher wanting to get something bigger. I love the look of the Traxxas Ford pickup but what do you recommend? No rocks around here just mud and snow want to put a blade on it.
Run XT60 mostly, with XT90 and QS8 reserved for high load applications. I do use some EC/IC plugs but just see no need in switching. I still believe the Deans is one of the best connectors ever designed - light, simple, inexpensive - the original 'zero loss' connector. Its just that with brushless, so many setups are beyond its 60amp rating.
I use whatever the car comes with now. When i tried changing connectors on a traxxas the esc poped an i never got a traxxas again. I love how they look but i was super bummed😊
IC3. I have a few spektrum smart batteries and a few that I swapped ends to IC3. I have stepped away from the smart eco system , esc options are receiver ESC 1/2 or the brick of esc that is just an axe rebrand. 2/1 doesn't have smart features.
I have a question for the expert. : ) I have a Dynamite AE-5L Brushed ESC that came to me with 3S 30C batteries. Would it hurt anything to run it with a 2S 25C battery? I know it is 2S capable but don't know if the 25C rating was too low for it.
I used to have all Deans until Harley Designs shamed me into using XT60. Changed out all the batteries, four port charger, and ESC connections earlier this year.
One of my spektrum smart Batteries is new out of the box, and when I plug it into my Spektrum smart charger it says balance not plugged in even thoe it is? Does that mean that battery is no good or is it something that can be rectified?..........
It feels weird to me that there are some people that don’t know all of this😂 xt60’s are my go to on all crawlers. Used to use deans and the good old Traxxas plugs that didn’t have the balance wires in the connector with the discharge wires. On 1/8 scale bashers I use IC5’s. Same thing as EC5, just without the third pin for all the Spektrum “smart” technology
Xt60 plug .... sometimes dean's plug.. spectrum in Traxxas can keep their proprietary shut down your throat plugs. Got to buy special battery go to buy special charger nope I've already spent a lot of money in my equipment I'm not going to have something that I'm not going to use regularly for just one rig I'll just replace the electronics in the rig lol
Excellent info Mr. Holmes, I believe you're spot on. I have a mix of Axial, Traxxas & Vanquish. I use/follow Traxxas batteries/chargers and their battery handling recommendation's. It's a system that works for me (not the most popular) with great performance. Hey man have a good weekend. Like button energized. Cheers!!!
I hardly know anyone who uses XT anything. We hardly ever sell any XT connectors at the shop. For years, Deans was the most popular, hands down. Now, Deans is in second place after EC/IC plugs. EC/IC plugs come on 80% of the models now, so they're hugely popular. I myself have even started to switch from Deans to EC/IC plugs after 30+ years of running Deans.
Almost everyone who kit builds, use XT plugs. Deans went out of style a decade ago. EC/IC plugs are getting to be old now too. Notice how a lot of chargers now come with an XT-60 plugin right on the charger instead of a lead.
@@shaynejenkins446 We do 3/4 of a million to a million a year in sales at my shop and we hardly sell any XT plugs. I go to loads of events and hardly ever see anyone running them. I could be wrong, but all of my experience shows XTs are not very popular in the surface community, or much of the air community.
Everything I have so far uses EC5, with one that uses IC5. I use IC5 to charge everything. They're interchangeable. Obviously. Even my only legit trail/crawler TRX-4 with Holmes Puller Pro uses EC5 with Mamba Monster X. It's fairly heavy with Treal diff housings, better gears, and cheap blacked brass. Rest are a few bashers. 🤷
QUESTION, so I charge my 2s 5000mah packs at 5 amps which is 1c right? So if I charge my 3s 5000mah pack at 7.5 amps, would that not still be charging at 1c? You're definitely the guy to ask this question to John Homie Holmes!
Charging at 1C means converting the mAh (milliAmp hours) to amp hours, then charging at that amperage. 1000 mAh = 1 Amp, 2000 mAh = 2 Amps 3000 mAh = 3 Amps 4000 mAh = 4 Amps 5000 mAh = 5 Amps etc... So at 7.5 Amps you're charging your 3s 5000 mAh lipo @ 1.5C.
I have a bit of everything at this point. A standard plug and package size for the batteries would be a godsend. The smaller cars are the worst for using whatever plug. I think my collect is an even spread between IC and TRX on bashers. The XT series plugs come standard on your competitors ESCs. Tamyia still uses Deans and a couple of off brand mini RCs. I just set up separate chargers for each ecosystem. It’s much easier that way.

xt60 works great in my trx4. and then i have the traxxas plugs still in the Xmaxx.
