Always a worry when you spot a rogue growling dog in the mountains, I think you did the right things in finding a way around it. It's always nice to see some local houses and gardens when you're out on a walk, interesting to see a bit of rural life and how people live up there. Cool that the lizards came back out again after you'd walked past, it's funny what the camera picks up sometimes. Another lovely walk but as you said it did look similar to some of the others you have done whilst on your holiday there.

That dog was fine in the end in comparison to others we came across. The random one we saw without an owner had made its way back to its house on our return leg, and it was super aggressive as we walked past, it came bounding up the path barking away at us. I appreciate it's doing its job warding off people from its owners property, but still scary when we didn't veer off the Levada - phew!

How are you doing mrs Caroline. Thank you for sharing your trips with us. As always iam gathering main information about places you visited briefly here it’s Levada do castelejo and do furada in Portugal are both great Levada walks in their own right but when combined together on this adventurous route , you are for challenging and exciting hike on Madeira island. Walk begins on Levada do castelejo with cliffside path and views to pico do Arieiro and highest peaks on island .once at river crossing trail divers up steep forest trail where things get interesting before joining up with scenic Levada do furada to circle back to starting point .

The Furada walk you mentioned was the one we were contemplating coming back via, but once we got to the bouncy bridge, we decided against it as the previous day of the really strenuous hike had really taken it out of us! But Castelejo was stunning in its own right.

Ah - no way! So pleased you're happy that I popped him into the video. I couldn't work him out as he was wagging his tail, but barking too! 🤣 Couldn't agree more about the view, I really loved this walk - goodness knows what all those reviewers experienced when they did it!

Great video Caroline 👍 kept my attention all the way through, I’m glad the three dogs were ok and you could continue that stunning walk. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to your next video 👍👍

Hi Stephen, thank you again for your kind words 🙏 The dogs were so funny after all of that worry. But on the back, because we were marching through and not filming, I think they felt a bit more of a threat and they were a little yappy, but nothing too aggressive. The one we saw out on the Levada without a collar though was really aggressive when it was back on its territory - came running at us up its owners path! Guess it's just doing its job though!

Pliver Douro is building there occupied privileged area of Gaia river front .meeting point for traders and fishermen , since medieval times .its was here they crossed river to sell products from upper Douro . Origin of building in 1881 date back to 18 th century and expansion of port wine . Happy mother day to you we celebrate mother day on March in Arabic countries as well as you in England. We stayed in Porto da Cruz for the last 5 nights of our trip, and whilst we're not into surfing or sunbathing, we definitely tick the hiking box! Interestingly, the whole time we were there, it was shrouded in cloud and the host at our hostel said this is usual because of the mountains that stop the clouds from passing over, so I wonder if the sunbathers leave disappointed? Our mothers day is next weekend, I knew it was different to the US - do we share the same one as you, or has yous already been and gone?

Yes dogs on trails can be problematic. I never had any issues with bears or cougars. But dogs and their owners, who feel it is your fault their dogs are aggressive. Only people attacked by bears in this area were provoked by the hiker’s dogs. Don't like dogs on the trail they scare off game animals. There is an interesting video of a hunter who is chased by a cougar, and the hunter had to shoot two warning shots at the cat before the cat left the hunter alone. I will take an aggressive dog over a big kitty🐯🦁🐱 any day. Cheers 🍕🍕🤠

It's funny because part of me logically thinks that by having a dog with you, you'll be more protected from something like a bear, but when it's pointed out to you that as a human, our instinct is to back away, diffuse the situation, knowing a dogs is the opposite and it's to attack, you're right, - it's far more dangerous! I've done a few walks in this country with my brother's dog, but thankfully we don't have any wildlife like that in this country. I guess the closest thing we get stick for is when dog owners don't put them on a leash when in farmers fields with livestock. Sheep and lambs have fared particularly badly in these instances. I'd let my brothers dog off the leash when he was allowed to be, but always on when it needed to be! Is the video of the hunter being chased by a cougar the one where he walks backwards for what feels like ages as the cougar keeps following and every now and then does a fake (but terrifying) lash out? 100% with you on taking a dog... or a black bear over a wild cat any day. Not sure where a grizz sits on that one!
