  • Want to write a satisfying mystery? You'll need to fulfill the Promise of the Premise. This concept, from Blake Snyder's "Save the Cat," will revolutionize your novel. We'll discuss what it means to Plumb the Promise of the Premise (it's easy!), and go over three specific questions you can ask yourself to make your mystery novel the best possible version of itself.

    I almost immediately thought of combining the Ghost Hunter and Marie Antionette one. The ghosts are stuck doing their routines from when they were alive but are aware of what goes on around them and saw what happened. The catch is to get the info you have to play along with the routine.
    My alternate thought was of a modern person becoming a ghost haunting the past.

    I learn more from your videos than almost any other “craft” videos out there.
    I love ghosts and I love bed and breakfasts. I was just the other day thinking about writing some stories based around a bed and breakfast at the beach, but hadn’t thought about making them cozy mysteries. I still don’t think I have the skills necessary for that, but the idea is intriguing me more and more.
    Mysteries and ghost stories have been my favorites since I was a child.

    Looove this, thank you! I'm in the drafting process of a mystery novella and have found myself stuck with the need for more scenes and a subplot! I vote vehemently for the Bed & Breakfast hook :) Besides, I just found your channel and really love it, because you not only explain everything so clearly, but also give practical tips (spreadsheets!) that I can use directly for my own ideas. I am a chaotic thinker so this is so very, very helpful. Also, I love cozy crime/mysteries, and most videos I've seen so far deal with writing thrillers, which is not really the same. Thanks for all your work! It's much appreciated.

    Hi, Jane, thank you for the wonderful information. I'm having a bit of a problem getting the hook idea. Is this like a story hook at the beginning of a story to draw the reader in? This hook you are talking about seems to be different. It seems to be more research to find out about the background in the story not a hook to draw reader in. Could you explain if you have a moment. If not, that's ok and thank you for great work; your videos are the best out there. Ted Greene

    • @janekalmes
      @janekalmes  7 дней назад +1

      Hi there! What I’m talking about is a hook to capture the reader when they’re trying to decide on a book to read. It needs to be something that can be communicated on the cover, and so I usually think of it as “the world the story inhabits-“ that might be a historical time and place, like 1920’s England, or the world of a specific industry, like fashion or tech, or an invented world, like a world of vampires. I hope this helps!
