    The Lummi Nation refer to the local orcas as Qwe 'lhol mechen, which means 'our relatives who live under the sea' or 'the people under the waves.' Orcas live in tight-knit families. In most cases, both males and females stay in their natal pod throughout their entire lives (this is especially true for Southern and Northern Residents). Orcas are incredibly intelligent and social. Their limbic system (the part of the brain that processes emotion) is incredibly developed and complex. Each pod uses a distinctive dialect to communicate. They're the only species, besides humans, pilot whales, beluga whales and narwhals, that go through menopause.
    Famous Southern Resident orcas (fish eaters) : Lolita, Granny, Ocean Sun, Tahlequah (who made worldwide headlines when she was spotted carrying her dead calf for 17 days), Moby Doll, Shamu, Luna (there's a documentary about Luna called The Whale)
    Famous Northern Resident orcas (fish eaters) : Springer, Namu, Corky, Tsitika, Eve, Sharky, Top Notch
    Famous Transient orcas (mammal eaters) : Lonesome George, Fatfin, Chainsaw, Esperanza, Sidney and her three children, Raksha and her five daughters

      I agree, there are no known attacks on humans in the wild; only in captivity out of frustration but there are no known attack in the wild yet I can see his apprehension when it look like it was going to bite the board but also more power to the whale in showing it wasn't meaning harm when it left when it could have easily carried on an attack if that would have been its intent. I also think it was trying to be playful and left when it didn't feel welcome. What intelligent and sensitive animals!

    I thought it was interesting that the orca was swimming upside down in the beginning. That looks like playing to me, because the orca knows he’s basically invisible from above. My guess is that the orca knew exactly what was on the surface: a human on a surfboard. I think orcas bump things just to get a sense of how solid they are - he could be playing or just curious.
    I like at the end when the orca decided he had orcas to see and places to go. This was just a fun little encounter for him.

    • @spencerschubert5001
      @spencerschubert5001 Год назад +2

      Haven’t you seen them “play” with dead seals? 😳 because they absolutely do that very violently. Same goes for the captive orca attacks, taking an object and dragging it to the bottom of the pool was just a game to them. Luckily, as you say, they this orca probably doesn’t need cheap thrills, because there’s lots of other stuff to do out there

    • @lumini3172
      @lumini3172 9 месяцев назад +10

      There’s different eco-types of orcas and it’s actually only a few small pods that target prey outside of fish and squid. Those pods are known as transient orcas.
      The video quality makes it hard to see what eco-type the orca in the video is but I’m pretty sure she’s a resident rather than a transient (ergo she probably only eats fish). She’s seems to be a young female as well. I doubt she ever had any intention of being violent and was just curious about what the human was doing. After all, it would be all too easy for an orca to knock the person into the water.
      I don’t mean to be all know-it-all, orcas are just my special interest and so I find videos like this very intriguing and like to give facts about orcas :)

      I read somewhere that the upside down approach is a sign of non-aggression. it's the orca saying "I'm not here to fight." not exactly the same as a dog going belly up to show submission, but similar in being visual communication. like don't smile at a strange dog. it sees you bearing your teeth as a sign of aggression. or don't stare at a silver back. it sees that as a challenge?

      Apparently killer whales are picky when it comes to food, just like humans are. There have been very few reported attacks by wild killer whales on humans, and none of those attacks have been fatal. Only captive killer whales have killed humans, and that has been out of frustration, not hunting instinct. Orcas are a highly intelligent species, they know the difference between a human and a seal.

If you look closely at 0:07 the orca is actually completely sideways swimming underneath. I assume because this is the best position it can get it's small eye to look at the board. The first time I went kayaking in the ocean an orca family swam alongside us breaching relatively close to the kayaks. I’m terrified of the ocean but I love the hell out of some whales and dolphins, they just seem so peaceful granted you’re not a seal. I stuck my hand in and the bigger of the three swam up to it within inches and I didn’t reach for it or anything but the tail and my hand did touch. One of the best times of my life, I’ve never seen a wild orca since then even on multiple whale sighting trips. Orcas are simply the king of the ocean and idk why they don’t demolish humans in the water considering the fact they’re cold blooded seal murderers, but I’m thankful they don’t!
