    Back in the day…. When I was in the military…. I went through Cold Weather Survival training up in Alaska. We had to ford through an almost freezing river, then, while shaking uncontrollably, learn to build a fire and dry ourselves and our clothes. We also were made to dig a foxhole in decent snowpack, shown to cover the entrance with a poncho liner (thin blanket), then lit a small tea candle at bottom. I swear it got up to 80 degrees in that hole! I had to take clothing off it was that warm! This video brought back a lot of memories! Thanks Steve! Great content!!

      A tea candle isn't going to make a snow cave 80° lol I'm willing to bet your body just found the best alternative to compensate outside a freezing river to make you feel that way. I've done many polar plunges and winter primitive camping. The human body does what it has to to make sure you're mental acuity keeps you focused on what's necessary, not what's wanted.

Or the coals aren’t orange. I’ve even used an electric drill for a proof of concept to myself. Any tips or advice? I’ve seen your video on fire starting.

    I'm glad to see you willing to go into the winter on a solo overnight. I like winter camping (no bugs). I got a 5 "ti a couple months ago and I've been loving it. I only wish I had gotten all basic the accessories from the start. I feel the need to get the extended grill and boil plate to round out the kit. I've used a competitor's smaller version for morning coffee. But your 5" version is a much simpler set up, cleaner break down, and actually folds flatter than my smaller one. Nowadays I only use yours because I can raise the base for a smaller fire for coffee but can also get good coals for a meal when needed. And I don't feel like coals will escape to the dirt and start a root fire underground, which happened with the competitor's. I'm glad I realized there was underground smoldering before it could turn into a big problem.
    Your gear shows how much thought you've put into making an interactive system rather than just individual pieces of gear. Anyway, thanks for the content. Be well.

    Looks like fun. Awesome video, it reminds me of my snow camping days, sitting in a cave above the trees on the NE slopes of Mt. Hood, listening to Jazz from WSU in Pullman, Washington, on a little transistor radio. For many years it was an annual New Years Eve adventure. Good times.
    Some side thoughts; There are harnesses you can buy that make pulling that Pulk a lot easier, check out Skipulk. For some time now, in dry weather, I have been using a DiversiTech 18 X 18" flame blanket under my Nano and the Gen2, It can withstand 3000 degree temps. In an emergency it can wrap up around the stove to help shutting it down, it is heavier than foil, but more durable. It is used as a flame guard when welding near wood or other combustibles. You will never get a fire hot enough to burn through it and it won't rip or tear.
    Steve, Thanks for your products and videos, I've been enjoying them.
    Keep up the good work and stay safe.

Have had the honor in the past of being a Wnter Mountaineering Instructor for the National Ski Patrol for 7 years. Great group to work with and the largest winter rescue organizatin in the nation. One suggestion: I carry a waterproof bag that I put my boots in and then place them at the bottom of my sleeping bag. ello! I worked at the Marine Mountain Warfare Training Center in the sierra nevada mountains where they trained for winter and summer survival. Sat in on training sessions but never snow camped. Got to do that. they said a candle made all the difference in temp and the entrance was lower than the sleeping platform! Your sleep system looks comfortable. Northing like natural products like wool and down good job!

    You should look into building a “Smitty Sled” as opposed to that friction robbing palk! Your snow journeys will be a lot less energy consuming having a container up on waxed skies with less touching the snow!! You will be amazed at how much of a difference it makes! Have your rope constraints built into one inch plastic pipe crisscrossed fastened to a waist harness so the sled doesn’t get away from you going down hill!! The video was excellent as always!!!! Snug as a bug!!!!!

    Talk about 'stealth camping': it can't get any better than this snow season tutorial! The table is a key, along with the stove, to provide a hot meal. We then can BRING OUR OWN HEAT through metabolism to sustain our body temperature through the night. (Of course, the high R-value clothing is also key!)

    Well done! Just a thot... b4 snow, look for a good deadfall with overhanging branches for snow support so you dont get buried alive first. Then with heavy snow go do that again. A more level spot might be better, too. Did you turn those eggs? They looked raw on one side. Yeah, brown eggs to absorb the radiant heat. Still have my original Firebox and a couple of mini's along with my Optimus 8R and SVEA 123R. Yup. They all still work! And I still use them (there are some places that dont allow fires, so the stoves) Stay Warm!! Jerry

    • @fireboxstove
      @fireboxstove  Год назад

      Thanks Jerry! Sounds like good advice. I did turn those eggs a couple times. I should have put them right into the hot coals at some point. Not really sure though that's the first time I've tried that method. If you get them too hot they might crack. I'll try again 👍😎
