I actually know a guy that crashpadded with the FO that died in this crash in PANC...very sad, as someone said the MD-11 is horrible in Crosswinds...RIP
@beeno7710 as you can see a relativly high cross wind at the airport. The aircraft was known to have "sloppy" responses from the aileron and elevator during final approach due to its design. just before touch down a gust of wind in the 60-70mph range hit the aircraft and due to bad respsonse on the control surfaces the pilots started to lose control, attempted to correct, overcorrected, and lost control causing prot wingtip stall and thereby rolling the aircraft on its roof.
I live nearby Narita Airport and I remember the day that this crash happened. I was going to jump in the car and go take a look but I decided not to...Too ghoulish...This airport gets some really nasty winds coming in from the coast, and it's not uncommon to see jets struggling to keep their line as they come in. Also this area is notorious for low lying fog in the morning. I worked at the airport for a few years too and I saw a few very dodgy almost disasterous landings there...Once when a Northwest 747 came in hard and blew all its tires. The main grear immediately caught fire and this thing was still moving very fast down the ¥runway with a huge plume of smoke and flame coming out behind it...Very dramatic from my almost perfect vantage point near the runway...
@thedayitriedtodie The plane actually touch down (That could be why the engines in reverse) then bounce two time before rolling over, Other videos shows that.
How exactly were they killed. The nose doesn't look burned and the cockpit is spacious right? If they were strapped in, they couldn't have fallen from their seats right?
I’m pretty sure I’m late to comment but I read the ntsb report, It said that the pilots were stuck in the cockpit for around 65 minutes before rescue could open up, apparently smoke, heat and fire had actually reached the cockpit and made it more difficult for the rescue team to free them, also in the report shows that the heat and fire had in fact reached the cockpit right after the accident, and after the first rescue Attempt, the pilots were already not responding or conscious anymore,I hope I made it understandable for you (sorry for bad English)
Definitely something wrong with the plane esp when landing in less than ideal conditions. Another MD11 crahsed in almost identical manner in Hong Kong during a storm.
The landing speed of an MD 11,is greater then that of all other airplanes.due to the smaller then normal rudder.and the fact the #2 engine=weight.on paper this aircraft could not fly.the FADAC was incorporated , to help with the flight handling of this aircraft.otherwise she's a flying brick. RIP.

I can’t believe this was caused by wind shear?!?!. Do MD11’s often turn over like this?
They caught that microburst at the worst imaginable time. May they rest in peace. God, I hate NRT!

And that's why pilots call it the Death Star.
I see so many MD-11s accidents looks like this plane is hard to handle with crosswind
the intense heat from the fire had left visible "wrinkles" through out the plane sheet metals.

1:19 is eerily similar to the FedEx MD-11 Flight14 - that flipped in EWR in '96- 97. They walked away from that one. rip
Earlily similar to what was left of the MD-11 that crashed at KEWR in the 90's
It scares me how easily planes catch fire
These aircraft bounce like fuck, especially when empty. Thrust reverse would not slow the aircraft down that quickly.
damn it was windy that day
Still remember that so sad
this comment hit the nail on the head! md 11 very un-forgiving+windshear???
I like this plane, but ...this is tragic. RIP

MY PACKAGE!!!!
2:16 sounds of engine of her MD11? Oo
J email me and I will inform you what H rec. for that near crash...excellent lawyer...milked those aitline bastards....nice new Ferrari as well!
Any Survivors?
Sad to report that both pilots lost there lives in this crash.
