1997 Clive James Formula 1 Show

- Shortly before the 1997 F1 season kicked off on its brand new channel of ITV, Clive James hosted a chat show featuring FOURTEEN of the current F1 drivers. This is probably the largest assemblage of F1 drivers in one studio. Clearly they all had personality and a good sense of humour that night and the questions were in good humour too!
Michael Schumacher didn't come to the studio, but he did an interview via satellite so at least he tried. Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart and Nigel Mansell also came to the studio with their old cars to discuss how they differed from the cars of 1997. I don't see this sort of show ever happening again, not only because current F1 drivers are not allowed to show their personalities, but mostly because they don't have personalities. To watch a dozen F1 drivers sucking up to the sponsors and their bosses doesn't seem so appealing.
It's getting harder and harder to avoid the copyright police to bring you these unique programs, so I'm having to make slight modifications to the content by deleting certain scenes, as you will see. Luckily, it doesn't really detract from the programme.
I sorta feel bad for Vincenzo Sospiri. Here he is, in the tiny 3-month window where he had the elite title of "F1 driver", and you can just feel the excitement and pride that radiated from him, joking around with Fisichella quite a bit throughout the program. He was named as a Lola driver in December 96... I believe this was early-March 97.... and the whole team folded around him a few weeks later... and that was it. F1 career over, attending only that Australian GP and never getting past a grand prix qualifying session. Never started a race. It's a real shame.
Watched him win the FFrord festival in the rain a few years earlier, great skills passed loads of people, didn't know he started an F1 season
Your comment reminds us just how many very talented drivers never get a decent chance in F1. Talent often isn’t enough.
RIP Clive James
Never seen this before. Would be difficult to gather so many top names in one place these days. Must say however, Clive James, absolute legend. In the same way Murray Walker brought the races alive as they were happening, Clive, in the season reviews of 82, 84 and 86 was basically my comfort food for years. I only wish he reviewed them all.
Among this group of amazing F1 personalities Ken Tyrrell just needed one sentence to shine the most. Until Murray Walker came on stage, obviously.
It's incredible how much hype there was on HHFrentzen pre 1997 season.
And JYS said Jan Magnussen was the best he'd seen.
Seeing them all waddle down the stairs like Penguins on speed is really funny though (Oh and very weird) LOL
The steps are to blame for that mate not the people, bad design for getting to the stage but good for slowing people down on way to there seats
THIS IS A MASTERPIECE!!!!! That's fantastic.
1997 was one my favorites seasons.
Too bad that evening the best driver of the grid was missing:
RICARDO ROSSET for Mastercard Lola 😎😎
Ah, "Tosser" 😂
R.I.P. Clive James and Murray Walker
I remember watching this on the night. What a brilliant show. Lost my video recording of it years ago, so thanks for posting. Plus Murray did actually get a prediction right :o)
I'd like to be Schumacher being part of the discussion about deciding a Championship with a collision.
Just found this video here and found that Clive James passed away some months ago. That made me sad. His sarcastic comments in F1 season reviews (= he) were great. Rest in Peace.
amazing, father of Verstappen and father of Magnussen...and part where Michael appears is epic.
Rubens Barrichello and Frasier Crane must be twins separated at birth.
Nicola Larini never got a word
I remember watching this in New Zealand 20 years ago. What an amazing assembly of stars, not only the drivers but the audience as well Jeeeesh even Pussy Galore is in there!
That was great, don't think it would happen now in 2017. I watched f1 back in that era & I think it was better than it is now.
How can anyone not love Ukyo Katayama xD
A decent driver for Tyrrell in the mid 90s (if the car would last 😅) and scored two top 5 finishes in 1994.
He paved the way for Takuma Sato and Kamui Kobayashi and they would both score podiums in their careers.
Right now, Yuki Tsunoda is possibly the best F1 from Japan and has that same bubbly personality like Ukyo here that makes him a favourite.
Ukyo Katayama getting roasted like hell! Wonder what would have happened if Andrea de Cesaris or Taki Inoue were there.
He was called Uyko Crashama in our household.🤣
"Andrea de Crasheris"
@@gunnergav My dad calls him "Catagrama", it means "Catchgrass"
Andrea would have crashed on the way to the studio.
Thank you for uploading this funny F1 talk show !!
OMG I had this recorded on video tape and watched it so many times!
Very funny. Thank you for uploading this, even with the ads. They are interesting too.
Also Rimmer had good question :)
My main man Clive James, Sir. i just love him so much. Thanks a lot Mr. The Fastlane.
Welcome!
What a gem of a show a terrific combination ofguesst
Thank you for posting this peach of a show.
I absolutely loved F1 in this era and never knew about this programme so thank you for uploading.
Really enjoyable and I really like Clive James so a terrific bonus that he was presenting this.
Love the bit at 16:22.
Had to laugh when Jos "did you spill my pint?" verstappen got asked about road rage😂
Nice rare footage of Vincenzo Sospiri and the MasterCard Lola Ford team!
Thanks for upload
I remember watching this in the run up to the first race
How different life was back in 1997. Imagine thinking at that time that Max V was not yet even a twinkle in his dad's eye.
Thank you for uploading!
Beefheart & F1! Hell yeah!
Thank you for uploading this, haven’t seen it for about 15 years ! I guess Nicola Larini had nothing to say lol or what he said wasn’t interesting !
My god. I've got this on VHS somewhere
I wonder who in show biz had the idea of ‘okay, let’s have the guests do their entrance on a big set of stairs’
This, followed by Grand Prix, then the race live...dream night of telly. Do it, Sky
Fantastic, thanks 👌
Giancarlo is strangely adorable, particularly when he starts laughing at 17:43.
Awesome. Thanks
Nick Mason in the crowd!
"Do you know whats goin on ukyo?"
Ukyo: "what?" 🤣
Was always annoyed that Williams strung Hill along until all the good seats had gone. One way to avoid a competitor. Clive's question to Ukyo was cruel but very funny.
this is a gem
Jeez remember watching this
these were the days. Best commentator along with Murray Walker
fantastic
7:18 John McCririck in the audience
I miss Clive's dry wit.
I want to go back to the 90s.
53:44 Ladies and gentleman Michael Schumacher 😎
Even the commercials are funny
Omg the dads of max and Kevin
RIP. That number he played on Johnny Herbert cracks me up.
Remember this being shown
True F1 legends and Jos Verstappen on the stage.
Villeneuve and Hill my favourites🏆🏆🏁
Good prediction from Murray.
Kevin and Max’s Dad. This makes me feel so old 😂
Watched this when it aired. Was the first season ITV took F1 from the BBC. It was cringe tbh at the time, all those drivers dressed badly having to pretend to be enjoying themselves.
Don’t they look young! 🤣
Wonder how much that cottage is worth now?
exactly
If only
Half the field!

Yes.
At 42:03, there's a question about female F1 drivers and Damon Hill expressed a desire for a female racing series which came true in 2019 (Formula W)!
Diniz In The Oven
Damon Hill was supposted to be a son of George Harrison.
Seeing a young Jos on TV … little did we know, that this was the year he became a dad to the 2021 World Champion.
It tickled me when he said that the crashes and going off not all his fault, I wonder where Max gets it from (joke).
princess michael? wtf ?
Williams dumping Hill was really stupid
Makes f1 nowadays look like a circus and boring
RIP Clive James
