So true. Unlike these tools I’ve beaten it 3x and took a very long break from gaming in general while we welcomed our first born. She’s 3 yo now and I’m finally getting back into the world of Skyrim for a 4th go to see if I missed anything interesting or just to relive that nostalgia. It truly is a master class in world buying for a video game.

@@007Dirtysouth, I took a couple of years off from playing Skyrim, and gaming in general, and I started playing Skyrim again last year after buying the anniversary edition, and I’m having a blast just exploring everything there is to explore. I love doing “wonder what happens if I do this?”, lol. I’ve found so much stuff I missed when I was playing solely focused on doing quests to beat the game. I’m level 90 and I just got around to going to Whiterun to start the main quest, lol. I just bought a laptop PC, an MSI Raider GE76, because I want to play Skyrim modded, and there’s a lot more mods for PC than PS4. I also bought Oblivion and Morrowind for the PC, but I’m having trouble getting my Xbox controller set up to work for Oblivion, and I’m having trouble getting it set up for mod installation, because I suck at understanding technology. I asked my oldest daughter to help me, but she says she doesn’t know how either. I think she’s just waiting for my frustration to be high enough that I give up and just give the laptop to her, lol. If I could learn how to use the mouse to play the games, I would be set. However, this is the first PC I’ve used in many, many years, like almost 2 decades, so I feel like I’m trying to read Chinese when I look at the keyboard. I downloaded NorthernUI for controller support for Oblivion, and it’s not working, and I can’t figure out why, since the Northern UI is showing up in the Oblivion data files. I’m more eager to play Oblivion than the other 2 actually, because I watched my daughter play it when she was younger, and I could see why she loved it so much. She played Oblivion after beating Skyrim. And I’m really curious to play Morrowind too. I want to see what some of the characters in Skyrim looked like in the previous 2 versions. For now though, unless I get some technological epiphany, I’m stuck with a really expensive paperweight. I should have known better than to buy it, knowing I don’t have anyone to help me learn how to use it. Oh well, you live and learn. I guess my daughter will be taking it to college.

It just is. Back in 2011, november 11th I think; it took me about 30-45 minutes of playing the game for the first time before I had a realization. I was walking up the mountainside, on the road from Riverwood to Bleak Falls Barrow, and I just had a moment where I thought, felt; that this was the best game I had ever played. I’m more convinced than ever that I’ll never get to experience that level of enthusiasm again.

You're climbing a mountain and, as if scripted, "aurora" hits you with its chorals right at the peak, you are compelled to stop and watch the scenery, the sky is filled with auroras, you look down and witness the vastness of the land that awaits to be discovered, moved by the view and music you almost shed a tear, once the music fades you continue your journey, that moment of serenity forever in your memory. That is skyrim at its absolute best, and few games can compete with that.

Nah there is plenty of games that offer more freedom. Try Minecraft for example
Don't get me wrong, I love Skyrim, but I think its greatest strengths are the game map, music, visuals and background lore (to some extent). There is cohesion in the artstyle and the overall design and presentation of the game. The story has some of the best quests I have played (Forsworn Conspiracy, A Night to Remember for example), but unfortunately, even more of them are boring fetch quests, so it's quite unequal.
Guild quests are more boring than in Oblivion. Daedra quests are better integrated to the world, though. Thieves Guild is probably the only good faction storyline. Main quest has amazing moments, but it is short and the downs are quite boring.

Skyrim has a special place in my heart from my childhood but it is barely an entry level rpg that only got a lot of people started on the road of open world rpg games.
Once you play nearly any other rpg and realise how much sway and control you have over the story and your character in those games Skyrim starts to fall off.
Even oblivion and morrowind had reasons to replay as a different character or role because there was a class system.
Skyrim doesn't take the roleplayung part of itself seriously so what you are left with is uninspired quests and flat combat.

Morrowind will still always be my favorite in the series just because it does not care if you make the most OP character in history, but Skyrim still holds a place in my heart, and it was nice to see Dwemer Ruins and Neloth return to the franchise. And I love how all the cities in Skyrim are less urban than Oblivions and Morrowinds, which I think actually enhances the fact that this is a very sparsely populated land.

The music is incredible, but more importantly no game is even remotely close to all the places to see, people to meet, stuff to level up, endless missions that varies from saving oprhans, slaying dragons, crafting potions, become a vampire, fight a civil war, use a bow, an axe, a spear, big sword, small sword, become a mage, shout in the language of dragons, persuade people, craft stuff, enchant stuff, sneak attack, brawl your way through, the list just goes on and the choise is yours. Great games are transportive. The frame of television or monitor disappears. The room you’re in doesn’t exist anymore. When we’re invested we become the Bat, scream down a Los Santos highway, or get engrossed in hunting Jazbay grapes.
When we return to the real world, the game experience has worked into our psyches. We see a building and expect an R1 to appear where we might grapnel boost. We resist the urge to carjack a Mustang at a stoplight. And we pick wild flowers when walking the dog just to hear that satisfying “snip!”
We also ask our wife, “Need something?” When she gives us a task we say, “I am sworn to carry your burdens.”

Bro some guy recently uploaded a 20 hrs retrospective of skyrim hahhaah, that bit about getting to the inn from blizzard and hearing Jeremy Soule and feel physical relief is very on point, I've felt it, I'm very sad that I will never experience Skyrim for the first time again November-December 2011 was a magical time, earlier that year i graduated from university, got a job and couldn't wait to come home to play skyrim till 2 am what a time it was

It will be interesting to see how my enjoyment and style differs from the crappy gamer of 13 years ago. Needless to say that this time....I'm doing all i can. Skyrim is the only game which I want to enter the world myself, wield a war axe in my hand and a fire spell on the other. While I explore and wander the gorgeous world and feel the aliveness of the landscape, with a voice that could tremble the bones of anyone in my path. And just glaze at the beautiful night sky while sitting at the throat of the world with an old and ancient dragon beside me. This game holds a magic in its entirety, the world, the music, the quests, the characters. Words don’t carry enough value to explain Skyrim. I don’t care whether anyone else share the same view as me. But regardless for me personally, every game that I’ve ever played just seems meaningless in front of Skyrim

Skyrim is definitely my favorite game but I don't think it's inherently the best open world game. If you are sticking in the same realm of things I would say Fallout 2 or Morrowind takes that cake. I've personally played Morrowind a good bit and I love the diversity of everything and how much it goes into the roleplaying aspect of things. Not only that but the world, albeit being not quite as big as skyrims, never feels all that empty except in the places where it's really needing to feel as such like in the ashlands where it's literally volcanic waste, and even then there is still stuff scattered about. The limitations of the engine do shine a bit more on the game. I find the dialogue more entertaining to sit through since it's reading, more information can be relayed that way too. Overall the systems are deeper and have more synergy than skyrims and works better with the world crafted around it. Morrowind is feels unique in the best of ways compared to skyrim which is very fun to play but the gameplay loop isn't deep enough to warrant actually thinking about it unlike morrowind. Everything was downgraded or simplified over time which isn't inherently bad either. A shallow game can be just as fun and it most certainly is. In the end it's still shallow though. I love skyrim with all my heart, but it's not the best.
