What You Need to Know About the Wolf Man (Before the Universal Remake!)

- My family started Universal Studios, and I make videos about their work and legacy. The Wolf Man is a little later than most of the videos I make on my channel - I usually stick to the Laemmle years at Universal - but I've gotten so many requests for this video that I felt it was finally time we tackled this monster. Especially since Universal announced a remake in the works - likely starring Ryan Gosling! There's no doubt the Wolf Man is one of the classic Universal monsters, so this is definitely my domain.
The Wolf Man is a 1941 horror film starring Lon Chaney, Jr., Claude Rains, Evelyn Ankers, and Bela Lugosi. It's one of the world's most famous werewolf movies, and though writer Curt Siodmak made most of it up by combining bits of werewolf myth, lore, and superstition, he ended up inventing much of what we believe about werewolves today!
Let me know what you think about the Wolf Man and the remake, and let me know what other werewolf movies I should be watching!

It's been almost two months since we last saw you, Antonia -- where are you?
Please let us know that you're all right!
One movie prop that I've always wanted is Talbot's cane from this movie. Unfortunately I think that it is already in a private collection.
I would recommend Hammer's 'Curse of the Werewolf' (1961) starring Oliver Reed, it's a great movie, with a completely different werewolf design.
Also, you must see The Howling
How bout "Wolf" with Jack Nicholson, it was decent.
Someone else just recommend it to me! I haven't seen it yet!
@@AntoniaCarlotta hey I can see Peter Deluise playing the Wolfman
@@AntoniaCarlotta what did you think of the 2010 remake of wolfman?
This isn’t talked about enough, but I think one of the things that makes The Wolf Man great is the relationship between Lawrence Talbot and John Talbot. Lawrence keeps trying to make John Talbot believe that he’s a werewolf, but his rational mind won’t accept it. By the time he does discover the truth, it’s too late. The irony is very poetic. Personally, I didn’t think the 2010 remake was that bad. Yes, there was too much CGI, but the movie had a very haunting atmosphere. I’m just afraid they’re going to set many of these remakes in the contemporary world. One of the reasons why I love the Universal monster films is because of their period settings, and if those were to be removed, a lot of the charm and intrigue would be lost.
I read that at one point, there were no plans to show Larry Talbot as the Wolf Man so audiences might always wonder if it was all in his mind. I see why they changed that, but it would have been cool to see that alternate cut made as well.
Chaney Jr. was so good in this movie. I’ve only seen him in this and Spider Baby, but he was just excellent. Spider Baby itself was just a WEIRD movie, but you could really feel for Chaney’s character.
It would be cool though for the re-remake if they go with the original concept for the Wolfman and make it phycological in that he only thinks he’s turning into a wolf wherein reality he’s just really doing those horrific things.
Call me old fashioned but I think The Werewolf of London is, hands down, the best werewolf movie.
"Company of Wolves" 1980's is a Cult MasterWork of a film. You will love it..a Red Riding Hood tale but very mature and scary set in Victorian Era
A werewolf movie with an interesting twist: THE WOLF OF SNOW HOLLOW. It was Robert Forster's final film. He actually died before it was completed. And no mention of THE MONSTER SQUAD? Uncle Rico (Jon Gries) portrays the Wolf Man (with nards). :)
I personally loved The Wolfman, I think Chaney was the best human version of a werewolf that I've seen. There has been much more authentic wolflike make ups, but even in the Abbot & Costello movie he played Larry Talbot as such a tortured soul, that I still don't think anyone else has matched, for me at least. Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman was more a Wolfman sequel than a Frankenstein one & his part in both the House movies was the major player with Dracula & The Monster more in the background. In the Abbot & Costello one Lugosi got to do so much more with the role than Carradine was given & really threw himself into it too

Totally agree - it's the emotion of Chaney's and Rains's performances that sell the movie. I've known more than one person suffering from MDD or BPD that strongly identify with Chaney's Talbot.
Dog Soldiers (2002) is an interesting werewolf film.
I haven't heard of it! I like that you said "interesting." Makes me think it might be different...
Yes! Dog Soldiers is a great one.
Lon Chaney Jr was The Best playing as 1940 Universal Wolfman Great Horror Movie Classic
What makes Chaney's Wolfman so compelling is the angst. He didn't ask for this curse and goes on quest after quest trying to remove the curse.
Yes, and he's the monster that ever got cured.
Great video! I loooooove The Wolf Man! He is my favorite Universal Monster. But I’m a huge fan of werewolves. Some movies you might want to check out - Wolfcop, Wolf, Late Phases and I highly suggest Ginger Snaps! It’s pretty legit!
Wolfmans makeup, I thought was great!
I always love Jack Pierce's work. Excited to make a video about him!
Do you like an american werewolf in london?
Love your content....Just finished Phantom....Wow...Truth is ....Do they....Are they?....Artistically creative enough today?....Hate to go there....However....Finding movie from the 20’s 30’s And 40’s my favorite....Can you talk about Film Noir....Fashions of the older movies....Especially the 40’s....And What’s your favorite movie....You are very articulate and informative....Valerie Craft Kitover
The Wolfman also has incredible music and the sets were great plus you left out the gypsy woman who was amazing. I did not like 2010 Wolfman so i dont know about another new movie.
One of my favorite movies the Wolfman Chaney he was the best for it and he was not a monster,, he was a Wolf
There again are critics who did not understand this film. I love this film so much. I love all the monsters. You can feel anyway you want too.Lon Chaney is incredible as the wolfman.
Not scary at all? I think the Wolf Man should have bitten the critics. Siodmak took the werewolf legend away from France (loup-garou) and made it Eastern European--if we can believe the gypsies in the film.
Werewolves not swearwolves…..
I wonder if THE WEREWOLF OF LONDON would have done better at the box office had Karloff played Glendon - and perhaps Bela as Yogami. As for THE WOLF MAN, I enjoy it, but it has to hold the record for the most inconsistencies - especially given its 70-minute length. This is most notable in Larry Talbot's first transformation, where he begins his man-into-lycanthrope change in his undershirt, but when next seen prowling on the moors he's gotten "dressed for the night." Thanks Antonia. As a lifelong Monsterkid, I really enjoy your videos! Keep 'em coming!
Been a fan of ALL Universal monster films ESPECIALLY when the Wolf Man is in them. My fav guilty pleasure is Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man. Though maybe not the best actor ever Chaney was perfect for the part.
I've wondered if they ever used a double for Chaney in the long shots. Seems plausible, as Chaney's time was valuable now, and could be better spent. On a long shot they could trot a stuntman around in abbreviated wolfman make up. My 2 cents.
I would recommend "Undying Monster" by 20th Century Fox. There is even a poetic ditty rip off in this film of "Even a man who is pure at heart..."
And "Moon of the Wolf",is a kinda remake of the "Undying Monster ".
I love this Wolfman movie I know it's shot by shot it's one of the best things that Lon Chaney Jr ever did I love the Gypsy in it Claude Rains and the movie score, I would put this movie on at night to help with a little something spooky to go sleep to, what a classic BOO!☠
I don't think I saw anyone recommend Wolfen yet. I think wolfen was superior to The Howling. they are both 1981ish movies
The Howling is another angle on things.
My favorite monster is Dracula
Try Curse of the Werewolf with Oliver Reed.
hello there! i don't know if you remember me , but you visited my class almost 3 years ago ! i was in 4th grade :)
I think it's a beautifully photographed film, and I think Chaney's personality was a good match for the character. Here's an observation, and a question. Antonia. When you see the wolfman in a long shot, is it always Chaney? A double would seem to make more economic sense, ( an abbreviated make up for a distance shot, etc..) but what do I know.. Good one!
Thanks for sharing Antonia Jack pierce did the wolfman makeup awesome such awesome makeup the original wolfman is a classic the 2010 remake I did like it as a werewolf movie but I didn't like how they change the storyline in the 2010 remake they changed the whole story lon Chaney jr is the only wolfman I did hear their doing another remake of the wolfman hope it's great Ryan gossling hope he is a good wolfman great video👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks, Cade! I looove Jack Pierce's work. I'm going to make sure he's one of the next videos I make. I'm trying to stay optimistic for the Wolf Man remake!
Oh your very welcome Antonia me to Jack pierces work was great definitely good makeup work cool cant wait to see the next video then sounds good yes hope the wolfman remake is good and not terrible hope so anyways
I heard back in 2017, that Universal wanted Ryan Gosling for The Dark Universe.
I recommend Dog Soldiers (2002) by Neil Marshall (writer/director of The Descent) and (of course) The Howling (1981) by Joe Dante. My favorite werewolf movie of all time is Teen Wolf (1985) with Michael J. Fox!!!
Watch "Dog Soldiers". Awesome werewolf movie! Its a British film that came out sometime around 2002.
I had not heard anything about another remake of the tale of Lawrence Talbot.
Not sure how I feel about this... I'd rather see a remake of Werewolf of London
As I said in the video, I'm trying to stay cautiously optimistic. I'm sure I'll have many emotions as more information comes out!
First of all, The Wolf Man. He’s a really good Universal Classic Monster! Second, you should really watch the Harry Potter Films! There’s a Werewolf in there, and his Name is Professor Remus Lupin. Judging by the Books, he’s a great guy! But, I haven’t seen the Films yet. I’m still reading the Books.
are you kidding I love The Wolfman My Favorite Monster
I first watched "The Wolf Man" as a kid. I won't submit how long ago that was. The werewolf frightened me, but the end of "The Wolf Man" had me in tears. I've always wanted that werewolf toy ("Woof Woof") that Eddie had on "The Munsters." There was a little-known werewolf movie simply entitled, "The Werewolf." I believe it's from 1957. The werewolf in that particular film was the result of a mad scientist's experiment on some unfortunate guy. Thanks a million, Antonia Carlotta!
The Wolfman is my favorite Universal Monster! Besides Curt Siodmak saying “he is the Wolfman”, the film is filled with references of his life as a German Jewish asylum seeker. The star in the palms of future werewolf victims refers to how Jews were marked with stars as they were sent to concentration camps. Hitler often used wolves as his animal symbol. So Curt is warning America at the time that, “Yes, there is a wolf to beware of!” The Hollywood premiere was 12/9/1941, just 2 days after the attack on Pearl Harbor! So there is a lot in Wolfman that reflects the time period. However, I think Antonia your dislike is due to it being a film produced by the loan company that took over the studio that Carl and Carl Jr couldn’t pay back. The pain and loss to your family I think is why you also are not a fan of this movie, and I totally get that!
The Wolf Man is my favorite Universal monster movie.
Seeing the failures of recent Universal remakes sequels or whatever I doubt this be worth seeing. Special effects gore and CGI will reign.
Something i think is interesting is in 2010 remake they actually put in the scene with the bear. Basically what happens (for those who dont know) the people of the village go to the Romani camp assuming there dancing bear is the one doing the killing, this is where Larry gets bitten saving a young woman from the werewolf. And my recommendation is Curse of the Werewolf (1961) from Hammer Horror. It takes place in 18th century Spain, and uses an old folklore about werewolves in it - that being that a child born on Christmas becomes a werewolf
Antonia...what did you think of the first season of Penny Dreadful?
Do you consider the invisible man a Universal Monster?
I do! In my next video, I'll be ranking the Universal Monsters, and the Invisible Man is included on that list! Do you?
@@AntoniaCarlotta you are the best. I look forward to all of your videos. So much knowledge and history. The Universal Monsters are my youth.
Bad Moon is fun! Love your videos!
MGM did a werewolf movie a year later even with a lame poem movie was called The Undying Monster it can be seen on youtube
The WolfCop movies are hilariously awful 😂
Antonia Have you seen the werewolf movie called Monster Dog with Alice Cooper?
5:38 man those where fucked up times for filming.
Wer 2013 is a great Wolfman film
Great video, very interesting and informative
Thanks! This was such a fun one to write.
It's a bit of a time commitment, but the 1960's gothic TV serial Dark Shadows did a really good werewolf story in 1969. It's widely believed by fans to be either the best or second-best storyline of the series.
Yes,but the storyline had no closure.
Another excellent video Antonia!
Thank you, James!
Awesome video!!!!
Thank you!!
@@AntoniaCarlotta You're welcome
The movie was good but I never thought much of the Wolfmans makeup design. It reminded me a lot of the Cowardly Lion from "Wizard of Oz" so it always kind of looked silly to me even though everything else in the film worked.
I never thought of the Cowardly Lion before, but now that you said it, I kind of see it...
