  • Dual Band High Gain Flower Pot Antenna. Experimental DBHGFP Antenna, A challenge laid down by M7MNP, thanks Mav.. Anyway the credit here must go to VK2ZOI, the real genius behind the antenna.
    I have followed the nicely laid out instruction on his website and made the antenna for you to enjoy.

    The build took me around 4 hours so what you see here is a 30min follow me video. I do hope you enjoy it and subscribe for more..

    Thanks Mike! I love these Flower Pot antennas. I´ve one (ordinary type) in mobile use on my car top. There are two tube rails on both sides and I´ve fixed there a small wooden "adapter" with a hole for the antenna: easy to install and remove. The antenna itself is made of 16mm pvc-tube and only the coil section is wrapped on a tiny 25mm pvc-tube; slim size in mobile use - hi! I´ve used an alu-tube (not alu- or silver foil) for the 70cm purpose: easy to tune to optimum SWR and does not effect on 2 m. Looking forward to receiving your new videos. 73 de Kari OH2BCY!

    Hi Mike! Thank you for showing us how to do it. After looking at building one myself before you made the video, I finally gave it a go. The finished antenna gave me an SWR of 1.22 to 1.34 on the VHF band and 1.11 to 1.30 on the UHF band. That is, just taking the measurements given by VK2ZOI on his website. As of this writing I have yet to put it up on the roof, as my ladder is borrowed by a neighbor and hasn't returned it yet. But, things look promising and is thinking of replacing my (another) homebrewed QWGP that I currently use. Thank you and 73.

      @@mike-M0MSN hi it's me again. I've managed to put the antenna up on the roof and got myself much clearer RX and TX reports from my mates. However, the SWR for the VHF band increased slightly from the 1.22 to 1.34 range up to the 1.40 to 1.50 range. It's still ok I know, but could be better I think by tuning it to the correct frequency.
      The frequency sweep from my NanoVNA (drive.google.com/file/d/1Ja1hQTo-gMMrcrob9xyZAPGN78xsujy6/view?usp=sharing) indicates that the resonant frequency is somewhere around 139.2MHz. To tune it to the 144MHz-146MHz range I need to shorten the antenna a bit. Question is where? Do I cut at the top portion of the antenna or at the bottom (in which case I have to redo the entire antenna)?

    Hmmmmm. Interesting aerial if I were interested in 2mtr and 70cms. I would have to do it in black, disguise the foil and wrap it in plastic ivy. But then the wind I get here would just snap the plastic! Multiplying it up for a lower band would make it a bit large though and would definitely snap or just fold over. Time to put in yet another permissions form for aerial(s). Annoyingly I did have permission before I moved in but didn't get the letter, now both persons have left and the computer says NO!!!
    Nice one Mike, quite a tidy aerial, though looking at the bit of paper you had looked a bit confusing, but when you were half way through I had caught up with what you were building. Excellent.

      @@mike-M0MSN Yeah, I can just hear the missis if I put something up inside. A false downpipe for a gutter perhaps? A DX Commander right up the gable end, but there is a drive there and no chance of getting radials in for a ground plane! In fact the whole of this garden is slabbed for easy maintenance. That reminds me, another permissions form to be done this week. They have to give in before I will, I hope. "Can I put up huge aerials on your land please :-))" I can guess the answer, but no harm in pushing it.

    Hi Mike - Many thanks for the video - I intend to try to make one of these myself in the next few weeks.
    A question if you have a moment. The details state that the pipe would be 25mm, but the pipe available here in the UK is 21.5mm.
    Would I need to adjust the length or number of turns of the phasing coil on this thinner pipe? I think the bottom coil forming the choke shouldn't be too critical (as I understand, I should use the length of the coax stated as the main guide).
    I was thinking of putting foil around the coax rather than the pole, and hide it away inside - Do you think that's a silly idea or might work? Thank you G7PAC

    • @mike-M0MSN
      @mike-M0MSN  3 месяца назад +1

      Yes, the phasing coil is a quarter wave length (If I remember) so just work out that length and do a dry run to find out where you need to drill.... good luck

    Have been re enjoying these antenna builds. Have a question about coax selection, would there be a difference in performance if using mini 8 vs rg58 mil spec vs aircell 5 etc. ( in the gainmaster rebuilding mentioned using better quality coax but could not find comments on performance improvements)

    • @mike-M0MSN
      @mike-M0MSN  3 года назад

      There is no real advantage in using better quality coax for the antenna itself, other than perhaps power handling and longevity, but it is a must for the feeder. :)

    Hi Mike. Thanks for making the video of the build. I'm in need of a VHF/UHF antenna, so after watching, wouldn't mind having a go at building myself one of these for regular use at home.
    The question I have for you sir is; after having built two flowerpot antennas, the regular dual band one and this experimental high gain one, what would be your verdict and thoughts about the two antennas? - We saw at the end of the build of the regular one that it performed well. At the end of this build, we saw you checking the SWR, but not trying it out for performance! - Did it turn out to be a good antenna? Was it's performance better than that of the regular one? Was the extra effort involved in building the worth the extra effort over the regular one?
    Regards David M0XQZ.

    • @mike-M0MSN

    how critical are those measurements,.. I've just built one from tubing from B&Q (says 21.5mm diam). For the top coax coil you say 70cm, but the diagram on vk2zoi says 670mm. I ended up with 8 windings for the top coax coil, instead of 7,... does it matter that much?. Also, how critical is positioning of the foil sleeve, does it HAVE to cover the whole circumference of the tube ?,... tnx G4FBC

    • @mike-M0MSN
      @mike-M0MSN  3 года назад

      Hi Ron, If you are using a smaller dia pipe than the coil will need to be longer i.e the one turn you have, the foil will need to cover the pipe fully, be give it a go, building it is half the fun.
