This won't be the last time you cry either. This show will have you all over the place. You'll cheer, cry, be angry, disappointed, root for the enemy. This show doesn't skimp on anything. Genocide, depression, grief, personal growth and strength, family dynamics of all kinds, nepotism, dictatorship, war and what it does to families, triumphs of all degrees. I've never watched a show as well written as this one. Every episode(even the Great Divide), has a purpose, is essential to the story, and the more you watch the more you'll see they all tie into each other.

Watching this show at 32 is so much more emotional. These children have to contend with loss, grief, and war all while clinging on to hope, being brave, and trying to carve out a better future. At 13, I mostly just thought, "This is so cool! I want to be a waterbender!"
(It's still so cool and I still want to be a waterbender.)

Fun fact about Avatar Kyoshi: she is the oldest ever Avatar living up to 230 years of age. Humans do live longer in ATLA universe, but as revealed in her novel she has mastered some technics to extend her life, and died only when she decided to "let go" of the material world. She is also extremely tall, its assumed that her height was almost 7 feet in her prime.

Agni (अग्निः) is the word for Fire in Sanskrit, which is a distant cousin to the Latin term Ignis. They both have common Proto-Indo-European roots.
Kai (会) is the word for meeting or gathering in Japanese, which these days is used in the sense of business meetings.
However, the show is using this word in the sense of a duel,, which may be a nod to the Tenkaichi Budokai, the name of a martial arts tournament in the popular manga/anime series Dragon Ball. (Tenkaichi means "The First Under Heaven", another way to say "The Greatest". Budo means Martial Arts.)

We got some good episodes back to back here. Only four episodes in and we've had Aang facing the reality of what it means to be the last airbender, Zuko's situation is more complicated and we get some fun worldbuilding with the Kyoshi Warriors.
I think part of the reason this show is so beloved is that this aired on Nickelodeon in the mid 2000s and it still managed to tell a compelling, often quite mature story despite sharing a network with Spongebob. We've got an episode showing off tons of corpses in a brutal last stand with Gyatso and a really feminist episode with Sokka. And yet when the Netflix version came around a lot of these edges felt sanded off; Sokka isn't sexist at all in the live action version....because I guess they thought that was "problematic" rather than an intentional character flaw they could explore. Not to rag on the Netflix series that much though, I'd rather focus on how well this story is being told even this early on. It only gets better from here!

I want to apologise for any spelling mistakes, hopefully you can understand what I was trying to say in my comment, I am visually impaired and have to use speech to text which isn't always accurate with certain words and especially peoples names, sometimes I do go in and try and edit with the spellings of names I know, but it's really tricky to find where different words are because the phone is too small and there isn't a way to change it, so I just do my best and have put these little disclaimers at the beginning of my comments now for some because it's really difficult for me to type things out sometimes rather than spending hours on it I'd rather just explain, unfortunately RUclips isn't super accessible with font sizes so I do my best and hopefully you can still understand the meaning of my comment, I apologise for any missed words or wrong spellings or things like that in my comment, but hopefully it's not too confusing to read.
I love how in tune you are with a lot of stuff already just by analysing different things and being more aware of different dynamics, it's clear that you know that there's more going on with Zo then we see on the surface, you may not know exactly what happened yet, but I love that you're able to pick up on it being family trauma and other things like his honour etc, there are Cecil nods to show you that Zo isn't necessarily a bad person and that just like other people in the show he's been kind of whopped by war and above everything else just wants his father's love and his praise he thinks that by capturing the avatar he will restore that honour he lost and that his father will finally love him and be proud of him like he is of Zo sister, often gets compared to his sister throughout his entire life which is something you'll see throughout the show and once you finally get introduced to her you see how different she is, she is definitely a lot like the fire Lord where is a lot more like his mother or his uncle always trying to prove himself or better himself but at the same time he's restricted by wanting that praise and love from his father which can lead him to making some bad choices throughout the show, it's always better to be yourself and not care about what anyone else thinks, but just cause it's better to do that doesn't mean it's easier and in his case unfortunately for him, you can just see how desperate he is for his father's love that he's willing to put his crew in danger and himself in danger just a capture the avatar. This is all stuff that Iro says to Zo in the third episode right in front of our faces but a lot of people don't actually pick up on it, that Zucco is just doing what he's doing for the affection of his father and how he doodled a master and got his scar like they're planting all the seeds right in front of you but for people who aren't analysing it like you are they don't always pick up on those things and I really love how it comes full circle even within just the first season over the next couple of episodes you'll get so many more answers onto Yuko is the way he is and why he makes the choices he makes or act the way he does, and I just love how they handle him as well, there are so many characters that are done so well, even like Sooka an episode four, he's always been the man of the tribe because all the other men are off fighting the war, so he's become quite sexist because he's trying to be what he thinks a warrior should be and act tough but it's really cool to see Suki really put him in his place and really humble him and it starts his journey to becoming a true warrior and a much better person person, I also love how they always call out his sexism like they make it very clear that his way of thinking is wrong and constantly challenged his way of thinking to help him grow and become that better person he becomes by the end of the show, and I think the first real glimpse of it is when he meets the Koshi Warriors and his interactions with Suki. going from the man he thinks he needs to be and the warrior he thinks he needs to be to you know actually being this really goofy and sarcastic, yet really analytical and skilled warrior, obviously it's gonna take a long time to get there and there's still some of that sexism that you see throughout the show but I love how it's always challenged and I love his interaction with Suki the fourth episode and it really shows that he has a lot to learn. Also seeing girl Warriors is so cool because normally when you see women warriors on screen they usually are dressed like the men and you know not really in touch with their femininity, whereas in this they're wearing long dresses and they have fans and they're wearing real traditional clothing And it's just amazing to see I feel like it really breaks away from stereotypes which a lot of shows don't do today.

Hi, Ashley! No need to apologize, RUclips makes enough money to invest in more accessible technologies and I hope they do so. Having said that, I had no problem understanding and appreciate your comment.
I knew coming into this show I would enjoy it, but I have been blown away by the themes and storyline. The subtle storytelling with Sokka's sexism and Zuko's family trauma in a "children's" show is a welcome surprise. this episode singlehandedly make me dislike the live action when i saw it btw. everyone has their own opinions on it, of course, but i personally love so much how they handled this incredibly heavy topic of war and trauma here. they never show any gratuitous deaths or violence, the allusions to it are horrific enough. also, the fact that they keep the suspense of "well maybe they survived and just flew away", just to show you aangs utter devastation at the end is so genius. no, they didnt survive- thats the whole point. the air nomads were peaceful monks, not combatants, and they were ambushed by people who had technology that no one else had at the time (or still has). in the live action however, there is a whole gigantic "cool battle scene", where monks are being burned alive and fight back and stuff. i lost all respect for the live action there - literally showing that made the impact of aang discoving this so much lesser. because it very very much just felt like another "cool battle scene" in an action show. nothing like the quiet tragedy of aang sitting in front of his best friends' and mentors corpse, finally being overcome by such strong emotions that only the love of his new friends could calm him down. that was the whole point of this scene/this episode, and they just completely missed that, it boggled my mind when i saw it. and well, i never finished the live action.
sorry for the rant, this episode is just so good that it makes me kind of rage thinking about some netflix executives thinking "well, we could make it better by showing people burning alive!!" ARGHHH
