Part 1 of the "Normandy 1944" Series
Many are aware of the names Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword when discussing the D-Day landings. But did you know that there was a 6th beach that was in the original plans? In this episode, we're kicking off our trip to Normandy with a visit to the German defenses at this little known invasion beach of Operation Overlord. Much more to come!

A minute ago I meant to mention D day memorial at National Memorial Arboretum.
The museum is awesome best museum in Gettysburg
The round opening on top of the fallen concrete structure is quite possibly a German M-19 Maschinengranatwerfer, 50 mm automatic mortar.
I'll stop posting this after this time. I promise. 😈
Hello
Having just found your channell I'm diving in deep.
I have a topic suggestion for you.
I have given it to every WW11 History site I watch.
I've never gotten acknowledgement from them.
I believe this is the most important and overlooked detail about Operation Overlord.
It has been purposefully and literally, buried by the Americans.
Look up Maisy Battery! There are a couple short videos on RUclips.
American military intelligence ( oxymoron?) Missed this battery.
American Rangers were killed en masse, attacking a fake battery on Pointe du Hoc.
The Maisy Battery Guns located 2 miles inland were completely unknown.
They rained shells on Omaha beach for 3 days.
Very embarrassing to the Americans.
Please consider looking into this!
Thank you
What I like is your reverence for History, and respect of things that we have left by our predecessors.
Thanks for this history lesson! I'm almost 76, and I've never heard of Band Beach before! Good to know! I'm a huge fan of stories about D-Day. My dad, uncle and many cousins served in the Army, Navy and Marines during WWII and I grew up watching actual footage of the war with them, on shows like The World at War, etc. God bless all the men and women who have served our country.

I just got back from my first trip to Europe at age 70 and made a point of spending four (too short) days in Normandy. I had only heard about the 6th beach from another RUclipsr by the name of Mark Felton, a British historian. I only had time to spend in the American sector and could have even spent more there. I am now officially obsessed with D-Day and its aftermath. Not sure I will ever go back however
Mark Felton did a very good video on the 6th D-Day Beach as well.
Looking forward to this series.
Well done. I subscribed! Went to Normandy in September 2019. That was my life-long dream trip to see the D-Day landing sites, both beach, airborne, US, British and Canadian. I can honestly say I had a beach vacation but my beach was THE Beach. The one beach where you want to cry. Never forget!
Awesome! Thank you! I appreciate that. Normandy is quite the place, for sure.
Im 24 years old, and i’ve been entranced by war history knowledge since i was a kid. Ww2 has always been the most interesting for me. i had gotten to the point where i knew everything any mainstream documentary talked about and i was getting frustrated from the lack of new knowledge. This channel is a godsend for my mental exercise thank you!
Awesome! So glad to hear that. You'll probably enjoy these next few episodes. Feel free to share the channel out with a few others!
@@TheHistoryUnderground So something really quick, i would love a few pointers from you! Im trying to start a new channel for the curious minds, for anything from history to the sciences to the everyday fun facts to explore. I was wondering if you have any tips to succeed in this type of channel development, since is similar to yours ! You were actually one of the big inspirations behind it and i would love to hear what you would have to say about expanding and the lessons you’ve learned from youtube!
@@carminegalante4925 - Appreciate the kind words. I think that consistency is a big one. That, and just making the best RUclips video that you possibly can.
I have been to Normandy. There are no words to describe it really. When you stand on those beaches you can almost feel the history and the spirits around you. You cannot stand there and not be proud of our country and our service men and women. We walked through those bunkers and saw where our bombs hit the beach as the sea grass blows in the wind off the sea. Thank you for doing this series.
Yes another D-day video!! Man I need to get over there some day.
Circular tobruks are for machine guns, octagonal tobruks are for mortars. Fantastic to see you back in Normandy, JD. Really looking forward to this series of videos. Keep up the great content.
Thanks for your RUclips channel I sure learn a lot through your presentations I'm so interested in World War II I can never get enough of the history lessons and the lives of the people who fought in it our heroes
Thanks!
I'm 68 and never herard of Band Beach either. Learning something today.
Awesome!
As we enter a week where we remember those who served and those who paid the ultimate price, thanks for the initial video of another great series.
Thank you!
Your production , passion and respect for all that have served is totally amazing and respectfull, thank you from the UK 🇬🇧
Erik is one of my favourite people ever, he's so cool. Someday I hope I can go to the USA, meet him and go to his museum.
Never heard of this beach. But this complex makes sense. You have to defend l'embouchure de l'Orne. Thank you to show us this unknow places.
So happy you were able to travel there. Your kindred spirit is always a blessing to witness!🌷
Appreciate that!
Yes thank you I myself never heard of this beach great job
👍🏻
It blows me away when I watch your videos. The quality and variety is incredible!!! I love history, I wish I could travel like you are able to. Thank you for sharing your content, it's like being there. Take care and safe travels!
Appreciate that! Hope that people enjoy the series.
Well said! 👍
Never heard about this place! This promises alot for the next upcoming episodes! 👍
Thanks! Glad that I could share. Got some stuff coming up that I'm hoping people will find interesting.
Thanks for sharing. Great footage of the bunker complex.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
Can't tell you how much I LOVE what you're doing. Taken in its entirety, I've never quite see anything like this stuff.
Thanks! I really do appreciate that. Hopefully, it's serving to do some good in some way.
Exactly . This stuff has been my life.. I was born in the wrong time
JD, you are very good at what you do and I’m certain that the kids in your history class in Missouri are blessed to have a teacher like you. I wish I had history teachers like you when I went to HS. Thank you very much for what you are doing. Very interesting.
Amazing, I had no idea about it, thank you so much for illustrated me !
I really enjoy your work, sir.
I'll be in France on Saturday. Normandy 8 days after for Juno and Omaha. Your vids have helped me plan this trip. Thank you.
Awesome! Enjoy your trip!
Normandy is absolutely a dream trip of mine. Love seeing this coverage of a beach that I’d never heard referenced before! What an awesome trip
Got a lot more after this one. A lot 😁
WW2 has always been the most interesting war to me. Hitler was basically a real life super villain who tried to conquer the world and so much of how our world today operates has roots in what happened in that war and what happened just after it. Traveling to Germany and France to see with my own eyes things like the D Day beaches is on the top of my list of things to do before I die. I love every WW2 video you put out. I especially loved your series of videos about Easy Company. I was in high school when I first saw that series on the History Channel and I thought those guys were some of the coolest and bravest men to ever walk the planet. I seriously love your channel.
Something tells me you are Eric are going to be friends for life. Keep the awesome videos coming!
Ha! Thanks. And yes, Erik is a great guy. I've learned a lot in the time that I've had to hang around him.
Great start. As a retired airline pilot I love your reaction to getting upgraded to Biz class. It's an amazing thing huh! First time my daughter got that, First, she couldn't stop talking about it for weeks! Especially when it's a long flight and sleep is needed!
You ever think about doing a long form documentary on these topics sometime? I'd love this style for an hour or two on one subject. Really allow you to dig into the actual history of it a bit more.
$$$$$$$
Yes..yes...And also get rid of the getting on the airplane part.
@@FenderBender5150 that makes the vlog.. feels like you’re travelling with him in a way
@@FenderBender5150 The clue is there if you look hard enough.
@@FenderBender5150 - Airplanes on a series called "History Traveler" does seem a bit out of place :)
JD.. Every one of your video's get better then the one before it you are a lucky man. I still think you should put these videos on DVD...I am 67 years old I had an Uncle who was on the beach on D Day ( not sure which one ) but he took a round from a German machine gun . it broke his spine. From when I was born till he died he was in a wheel chair as a kid My dad always told me not to ask him what happened .( you know kids ) so it always made me nervous to talk to him.. They are all gone now but thank you for the memories ( not to sound like Bob Hope ) FRANK FROM MONTANA...
Great video as always. Thank you so much
My pleasure! Thanks.
That's so cool my friend. There is nothing better than military history but all history is awesome for everyone to learn.
thanks!
I think I'm in love " with all your videos" 🤗 . I appreciate all the history information you post. You make the most interesting videos on you tube. Thanks 👍🏆
🙏🏼
That plane trip was awesome looking my guy.
Great. Really looking forward to the Normandy series. Enjoy your stay there JD.
Thanks!
I have been where you are and it brings to life how much they went through to take them beaches Great video JD and Eric Thankyou for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching.
My uncle was involved in the D-Day landing on Omaha beach. My daughter and me are excited to see what you have in store JD.
Wow! Hope that you all enjoy it!
Digging going back to France!!! Excited for the future!!!
Can’t wait to show the content!
@@TheHistoryUnderground I'll be watching like always!!! Great job man!!
Wow read alot on wwII never heard of Band Beach, thanks for the lesson
👍🏻
Those bunkers looks amazing
What a great start to a fantastic adventure. Thank you so much for taking us along.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the history lesson once again. I never knew about Band Beach at Normandy.
Appreciate you watching!
Wow. That's how air travel should be. First time I've heard about the 6th Beach. Cool. Thanks.
That small concrete bunker, with the machine gun position, which was on his site in the ground, They called that a TOBRUK Bunker .. Always a plessure to see your movies.. !!! Thanks !
Thank you!
It's great to see you both take this trip, totally awesome!
👍🏻
My most favorite place on the planet. Can't wait to go back.
Was totally thrown off guard when you made a reference to such an obscure Kanye lyric from "Jesus Walks" I literally had to skip back to make sure that's what I heard lol! Great video as always sir! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Ha! I was wondering if anyone would pick up on that. Thanks!
Purchased two relics from Omaha. They arrived today! Tell Erik thanks and thank you for directing me to his auctions.
Awesome! I’ll be sure to pass that along.
Just found this channel, binge watching the play lists and loving it! Fantastic content❤
🇸🇪🇫🇮❤🇺🇸👋
This channel is giving me so much pleasure and information so I don´t know were to begin. Just fantastic!!!! I´m mostly speechless after an episode. There is always something new to learn! There ought to be an Oscar for best YT videos, this channel would be the one to get it.
Keep up the good work! Just amazing!!!!! Greetings from Sweden!!!
Ha! Thank you. I appreciate that. Feel free to share these out. Wouldn’t mind seeing a few more viewers from Sweden 😄

As usual, a great video. As much as I've read and watched about Normandy I'd never heard of Band Beach. Thanks for another informative video.
Thanks!
Liked this episode. Thanks for bringing sometimes forgotten history to life
Very cool that you are at the Normandy beaches. I can’t wait to watch the next video in this series.
Thanks!
I am so pumped for this series! This is gonna be so amazing! I had a lot of fun checking out Gettysburg this past weekend partially thanks to you, I appreciate the input you gave me on the side man!
Awesome! Thanks!
Oh LOVELY! Back in Normandy! CANNOT wait to see more! :D
😄
Ohhhh mannn, I am late to the party, as always.. but really psyched to see you back in Europe again. Can't wait to watch them all :) I hope you had a good trip and are safely back home.
👊🏻
I actually never heard of Band Beach...thank you for this. You can really visualize the events through your narration and filming. I'm jealous of the places you've visited.
Glad you enjoyed it!
So awesome to see you and Eric traveling together to these places, the added knowledge of him- along with you JD is absolutely awesome. You two together make an awesome team. I'm looking forward to this series- being an Army vet (OEF/OIF era), and having been stationed there- I would love to see you two go into Germany and check out some of those places- especially Darmstadt just south of Frankfurt. Old SS Panzer unit barracks still exist there- for now, but Germany is slowly erasing that history.
Thanks! Definitely want to do a big series in Germany at some point.
Very interesting. I've never seen Band Beach identified on a map in any book I've ever read about the D-Day invasion. It sounds like you have a great series of videos planned around your trip. Looking forward to seeing them.
Looking forward to sharing a bunch of these places and stories!
I've been saving this all day, get in bois we're going to Normandy!
Ha! Thanks!
You need your own tv series!
🤜🏻🤛🏻
Probably too ugly for tv, but thanks!
The only other person I have heard cover this is Mark Felton on RUclips. Congrats on another excellent video
Appreciate that! Hope that you continue to enjoy the series.
Nice way to travel. U deserve it man. Love the content. Graffiti is sad to be put on those bunkers though😪😪😪😪
Such is much of the youth today
@@baronedipiemonte3990 yes so sad
I’ve looked forward to watching this video all day! Never heard of Band Beach! Great video!

Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching.
So cool you are at Normandy! I visited a lot of battlefields (including Ghettysburg and Antietam), but Normandy is still on my bucket list. Luckily i can join you.
Enjoyed it. Thanks for doing these series, I'm learning alot from them.
Every Sunday will now be planned around the new episodes! We are going to Normandy in October 2022! This will give us so many ideas of things to see and do.
👍🏻
Love how you dive Into our Collective History... as a Baby Boomer I appreciate and honor your achievements!!🎩🇺🇸🎩

Business class in a triple 7 across the pond, NICE!!! Good start.
Ha! Yes, it was. Doubt that I'll ever get to do that again.
So jealous! Someday we will get over there. Great video and looking forward to the series!!
Knew Band was there but, haven't been able to locate much on it either. Not for the first time, I wished a presenter could travel backin time, to where he was reporting on. First time seenin Band, so thanks m8. Keep up the good work.
👍🏻
Great video and very informative...hope you can make the Maisy Battery while you are there.
Thanks! I had plans of visiting Maisy but unfortunately, couldn’t get things lined up with the owners. They live in Britain and we just couldn’t get our schedules aligned.
@@TheHistoryUnderground We went 2 years ago and it was uncrowded and very cool...I'm sure you'll be back.
Firstly i love your videos! They are so informative and sometimes i do wish they were longer. Secondly is there any chance you would go to any camp sites? Pow etc.
Thanks! I'm not aware of the sites of any POW camps. May need to look into that.
@@TheHistoryUnderground
There’s Berga, the Allied POW/death camp where we lost so many Americans. The Germans made them mine there and, of course, starved them.
Really enjoyed it amazing video thank you JD and this series is going to be absolutely amazing i’ve been looking forward to this can’t wait for the next video JD
🙏🏼
Some time ago you mentioned maybe trying to arrange a trip to Normandy for your subscribers next spring. Is that still a possibility? Love the content you produce!
Yes, definitely. Just trying to get a time nailed down. Hope to have an announcement sooner rather than later.
I've been to the the Normandy beaches, cemeteries and battle sites many times. It amazes me that the naval guns and bombers didn't obliterate these bunkers before the landing. Many are still standing today - all are damaged of course, but still defensible.
At least you had nice weather for that bunker. It was raining on me when I went. The hotel I was in was right behind you at the beach intersect between band and sword.
Nice! We had our fair share of bad weather to contend with as well.
@@TheHistoryUnderground well of course you did. Wish I'd have known at the time since I was a short ferry ride away then
I paid a few bucks and some miles to go first class back from Paris to Chicago and I am happy I did . Great way to go. Had two windows on a 787 plus all the amenities shown here.
I also have never heard of Band beach. I can see with all the fortifications why it was bypassed. Better to flank them and make them irrelevant. Very good information, as with all your videos. Looking forward to more Normandy content.
Thanks! I think that it would've been a difficult one to assault.
Awesome JD!! Vids epic as usual. My gosh, imagine being in your history class! Id stay up all night just to not miss one second of what's next in it! ❤💪🙏💯
I think you should take a drone on this type of trips. It would make discovering bunkers a piece of cake.
I'm planning to visit Normandy hopefully in next few years. Love your videos keep up the great work 👍 👏
Hi great video my grandad always said there was 6 beaches in Normandy invasion. I got into an argument well heated discussion at senior school with my history teacher. I only mentioned it to my grandad as passing he went up to the school and had a long chat with the history teacher ( man to man) the teacher was very grateful for the info. But like the teacher said no one mentioned it after the war or at his universities he studied at. The bunkers had been a threat as they would have targeted shipping and mainly sword beach the Royal Navy damaged four bunkers along the beach along Band landing beach. As so much damage had been done to them that Band landing zone had been cancelled and the troops sent to sword beach. The parachute regiment attacked the bunkers from inland. One thing my grandad told me was that some of the big guns on the French coast could hit England across the channel and could hit the port town of Dover. It would take 30 seconds to cross the channel. Spotters could see the flash of the guns from France and sound the alarm to the town. Great video keep up the good work 👍
I still think you need your own program exactly like you do your videos … just you and whom ever you interviewed. History channel lost its chance. Hey #TravelChannel, if you want a good program about history, here’s your guy!! 💞 Thanks for taking us along!! Excited for the new series 🥰
Band Beach. Never heard about that Sector, but Wikipedia knows it. Interesting!
👍🏻
Good start to the series.Band beach was discounted as a viable landing due to the area behind the beach being flooded.
Thanks! Glad that I could go by there and show a bit of what was there.
Well done my friend!
👊🏻
When I saw the trailer I wasn't sure if it was going to be new videos or re-edits, I'm so glad its new ones! Kudos on the business class travel, it really is the best way to fly! haha
Cant wait to see what you and Erik get upto!
Definitely all new stuff. Hope that you enjoy it!
You’re getting too good at this teaser thing… keep them coming, great job.
