- A few questioned our recent video using a heat gun to restore heavily-damaged, UV-bleached black plastics. We show in a single, uncut video how a heat gun is the best way to bring back faded black plastics, and we test 3 top name plastic restoration dressings.

I didn't know you bring back the blackness of the plastic using a heat gun. Thanks for the information!!!
Again, this is really only for the worst scenarios.
In my experience, the best restoring product for putting black down on porous plastic is Solution Finish. My favorite protectant is Aerospace 303. Use 303 before damage and you will most likely will never need a heat gun or a restoration product.
Proper maintenance and preventative care is a must!
I did what you said on my ski with the heat gun first, It worked, I loved the results. Thank you
Glad to hear it.
Thanks buddy i really enjoy it IM new to all this learning alot
Glad to help!
Great video Kevin. Very informative.
Going give XPS a try on my sled.
Thank you! Make sure to keep your plastics well maintained so they won't need extreme steps.

which protects the best in your opinion kevin the XPS or armorall? Also for the vinyl seats on the 2016 through 2020 yamaha GP1800's and VXRs which is the best protectant for the Vinyl to keep from cracking and best moisterizer.
Another great video Kevin 👍 I think your neighbours dog has Covid-19 he sounds Rough😷🤒 haha.
I hate chihuahuas more than any animal on this planet. - K
What product do you recommend to keep it from becoming sun bleached
Hey Kevin,
which protects the best in your opinion the XPS or armorall? Also for the vinyl seats on the 2016 through 2020 yamaha GP1800's and VXRs which is the best protectant for the Vinyl to keep from cracking and best moisterizer.
XPS is decent, but it's so light that it doesn't last long. Armor All is pretty greasy. There's a Meguiar's vinyl protectant made for boats that's really good.
Thanks....I am doing the hood on my 1996XP. Also, my Harbor Freight heat gun lasted about 6 hours before it burned itself out.
Harbor Freight tools are the embodiment of "you get what you pay for."
@@watercraftjournal It’s actually a brilliant business model. I love Harbor F. even if I have to keep buying the stuff over and over again. It’s always cheap on the day I want to save money, future be damned.
I know what to buy now. Thank you!
Hopefully, you don't let your plastics bleach as bad as Kevin's tailgate.
Love this video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’d be having a face to face confrontation with that neighbour about his yapping dog 🤬
LOL
Thanks for your awesome video. I’ve already put a coat of product on before seeing your video. Can I use a heat gun with the product already applied? Or should I use rubbing alcohol to remove it and then do the heat gun?
We never did it backwards, so it's hard to say.
Curious about the wattage of that heat gun

Great video Kevin.... Really like the versatility of your videos, helps us newbie ski owners. Question..... did you kick the neighbors dog a few times? Is that why he's barking profanity at you??? 🤣
No, it’s barking incessantly because it’s a chihuahua, and chihuahuas are the worst animals on the planet.
@@watercraftjournal totally agree with you. But i do have a serious question. Was watching a video of the Riva Racing rear exhaust, and was considering it for my 2017 GP1800. I know it helps relieve back pressure,, but does it help with performance of the ski? Help longevity of the engine? Or is it just a "sounds cool" thing. Question is....is it worth the investment?
OK first, NO IT DOESN'T. Whoever lied to you about "back pressure" is lying or wholly ignorant on how an internal combustion engine works. Heck, you just gave me the topic for next week's live session video! All it does is make noise. And it's an awful noise. It also kills the resale value of your ski. I personally HATE these through-hull exhaust kits. There's ZERO performance gain over a Free Flow Exhaust Kit. It's 55% less money, retains hull integrity and doesn't drone you deaf.
@@watercraftjournal i dont know much about engines, thats why i watch your videos and podcasts. But that video was directly from Riva Racing, so im just trying to get clarity on it...not trying to start a debate. I would like to see you post a video and explain that to us viewers. Thanks Kevin!
@@watercraftjournal also, i know its different than a Free Flow Exhaust, but does that mean the Free Flow has any benefit than the stock exhaust?? A little clarity on that too would be helpful.
Can I use XPS on a Yamaha?
Is it the same weight as what Yamaha recommends?
I sure wish there was a better product I use an open flame shrink wrap torch, so many stickers tho I wish there was a better product to avoid having to heat it. Zep's enhance all works well after heating it but just like all the other products it still has to be heated :(
I did a similar test on my sea doo jet ski's faded trim. I threw everything a had at it from black trim polish to tire foam. My conclusion was that nothing worked...until the next day. As a walked by the next day i noticed that almost all of them worked, it just took a long time to absorb into the trim. /shrug!
Or you could do this easy trick...
what bout oregon.... no sun.
bought a 21 fish pro... off shore scary. nothing bout cold winter ride. love channel !!!!
What about Oregon? We'll wait for Portland to stop burning first.
@@watercraftjournal yes . but ocean never been off shore
@@watercraftjournal my last was 118 deb. water air. very light running 93 o currently parked in garage. leaf blower to remove water.
amazing craft. lotta learning curve. up here Pac rare
Have you tried black wow ??
Never heard of them, but willing to put money down that it can't undo severe bleaching like a heat gun can.
Kevin Copperfield, must be a magic trick Kevin. Camera magic 🪄 🤪😂🤣😘

DON'T BELIEVE YOUR EYES!
Lol, some people you just can’t help my brother.
It's just that "some people" happen to work for BRP.
lol, it does work ….
i use olive oil on my 99 gsx ltd. lol. shit works.
LOL!
Super toxic to smell melting plastic
"Looks like I picked the wrong day to quit sniffing glue..."
Great review of the products..but that yapping rat needs to be delt with.
LOL you have no idea how badly I hate that dog.
