  • Earlier this year, on a specific day, I had the worst day. I think of that day often. Here is an original piano composition that tries to capture the mood of that day.

With regards to the composition, it's deliberately melancholy, in keeping with the premise of the song. I really like how the song starts, with the discordant sound of g played against Emaj/G# in the second bar (see 0:12). Playing g# here would have perhaps been more traditional, but I love a bit of discordance! That discordant sound comes back a few times, but it doesn't quite hit the same.
There are some elements of this song that were inspired by Chopin's Nocturne in C# minor (op 20). Firstly this includes the initial left hand pattern. Also, at 1:39 you may notice the left hand breaking its usual pattern and going on a little scenic excursion in D minor before then being follow by B major/minor at around 1:43. The excursion is not the same but was nevertheless inspired by Chopin's left hand excursion in the 16th bar of Op 20 in F# minor, ending up in D major one bar later (this is the same jump but in a different key). My least favourite part of the song is around 1:45 as the chord progression is a bit predictable and cheesy here, but I struggled to come up with a better resolution.
Please note I am not the world's greatest pianist and I find this song quite tricky to play. The left hand is quite busy and is covering quite big spans at times! For the most part, the right hand is quite easy. I found making the right hand any busier tends to make the song deviate from the melancholy theme I set myself.
This song was recorded on a Kawai K300-ATX2 silent piano (this means it can be played acoustically but also digitally). The audio you can hear is the acoustic sound captured using two Audio-Technica AT2020 microphones placed very close to the hammers and spaced relatively far apart. I didn't experiment with this too much. I've come to learn that recording the acoustic sound of a piano is a bit of an artform! If you have any tips to improve the audio, please reach out! To capture the audio I used a Heath & Allen Zed i10 mixer plugged into a laptop. I captured the piano's MIDI out (used for the visualisations) using a Roland UM-1EX MIDI interface plugged into the same laptop. I recorded the whole session with Reaper.
I applied some visualisations using a custom script I wrote to show you what notes I am playing. That script is actually way more complicated than it needs to be and does some fluid dynamic simulations for added fun. If you look closely you can see some flame-like things coming out of the notes being pressed. I have too much time on my hands it seems!
Hope you enjoyed watching this video and if you liked it, please like and subscribe (it really helps)!
