    Akane's time changes is what drives this song, for me. The times changes direct the music.
    With no vocals you can clearly hear, not only how busy Kanami is, but how soft yet intricate she plays and never overpowers Saiki while adding fullness.
    The more you listen to any Band-Maid song, the greater they become. I'm just now q, after four years getting to sit down and listen to them with good earbuds and my GOD! what a difference. It's a complete new band for me now.

    • @Chan_Fry
      @Chan_Fry  5 месяцев назад +2

      "what a difference!" -- Indeed, some of these songs are "okay" for me until I put them on better headphones/speakers. :-) For songs that heavily feature MISA, I use Bluetooth earbuds which have a bass-specific setting and it feels like that setting was designed with MISA in mind -- it's PERFECT. :-)
      "The more you listen... the greater they become." -- YES! Only a couple of other bands have ever had that effect on me, and none to this degree. Every time I listen to a Band-Maid song, not only am I reminded of why I liked it in the first place, but I'm startled to notice something new, or reminded of something I forgot, or hear it in a different mood and every time it's perfect.

      I think it’s that quality, where the songs are so densely packed that you pick up on something new each time, that gives truth to the meme that your favorite is the last one you listened to.

    I have the instrumental version of Unseen World that the Maids released with an official score book, so I did create a playlist from that, with Yolo and From Now On. I named it B-M Unheard World 😅. It’s amazing how much is happening underneath the vocals in most of the music that they’ve written. Thanks for your work on these videos, l really enjoy them.

    • @Chan_Fry
      @Chan_Fry  5 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks for watching. Yes, the "how much is happening underneath the vocals" is absolutely right! :-) Just randomly choosing songs from my pre-Band-Maid days, I found that almost ALL of them do as little as possible behind the vocals, but Band-Maid chose the opposite path: compose the song so that it's not obvious where the vocals should come in. :-)

    The start of the Band-Maid tradition of having the "B" sides of singles be just as good or better than the "A" side which is very very good too. Yolo was based on a song Kanami wrote before Band-Maid which she rearranged for the band.

    • @Chan_Fry
      @Chan_Fry  5 месяцев назад

      Someone else mentioned that Kanami wrote this earlier... Very fascinating! And I agree -- they didn't choose throwaway songs as their B-sides. :-)

  • @tinyhato

    Thanks for taking the time to do these. First off: I'm jealous! I couldn't get my kids to sit and listen to a Band-Maid song for anything haha. What a smart kid, he had some good comments.
    Fun fact: this is a song from Kanami's singer-songwriter days that she worked into Band-Maid style. So by that measure it's possibly the "oldest" song in Band-Maid's catalogue.
    And about Saiki, I had the same experience when it comes to appreciating her as you did. Obviously I always liked her, but listening to covers and to a lot of other female JRock singers over the years has made me appreicate her more. I also think she's been improving a lot as a singer since Covid times. You could hear her getting better with literally every Online Okyuji they did back then, and they were only a few months apart. I don't know what she was doing then but it's paid off.
    I think one thing that leads to her sometimes being overlooked her is that she's not showy, particularly in studio tracks. This is one thing that I like about her singing style, but I do wish she'd let loose every now and again. I don't think a lot of people want "diva" style in Band-Maid but I do wonder what "Hate?", for example, would sound like if there was more anger in her voice.
    When I was reading literally everything I could find about Band-Maid back in 2020 I remember an interview where I believe the translation said she sings "flat" (not flat notes obviously) on purpose. I assumed she meant evenly and without embellishments. I think throwing in a moment or two here and there could be a cool addition to the Band-Maid style and they wouldn't have to change their sound to do it.
    I'm in complete agreement with you about the song not being top 10 or whatever, but I have to say I *loved* the timing when you said "this could be any band" before arguably their weirdest second verse to this day. What are Misa and Kanami even doing in that part? You gotta love Band-Maid: there's a surprise in every box.
    Finally, regarding instrumentals: the Unseen World album has an instrumental version and it is crazy.
    Looking forward to the next one! Have a great day.

      Thank you so much again. I passed your comments along to my son. I can't *always* get him to sit through a Band-Maid song, but he (and my daughter) were right there with me when I first discovered this amazing band -- so they each have their favorites (my daughter's faves are "Manners" and "Domination (live)" -- though she recently came across "Moratorium" by accident and got pretty excited about it).
      "other female Jrock singers" -- I hope I don't ruffle feathers, but I *really* don't like the sound of so many of their voices -- probably because I was socialized with American-sounding rock voices when I was younger. Saiki -- and a couple of others -- have a different quality that is truly a pleasure to hear. :-)
      "remember an interview" -- that's interesting! I think she has attempted to embellish a bit more since then, though I haven't deep-dived into any new songs yet.
      "loved the timing" -- LOL, that was my favorite part of this video, upon re-watching. :-) I just HAD to say something and of course Band-Maid didn't let it stand and immediately corrected me. (I'm always happy to be corrected by Band-Maid.)

    Saiki's voice is irreplaceable. However, when you see her performance in person, you can't take your eyes off her. Before seeing them live, I thought I would mostly focus on KANAMI, MISA, and AKANE because I had been mesmerized by their playing. However, once the show started, I was captivated by her. It's not just because of her beauty (though she certainly is beautiful), but also because of her charisma and captivating presence. I hope you get to experience it; it's life-changing.

    "If I heard this at a music festival without the vocals, you'd think this was any band."
    Instantly humbled, lol. I'm definitely too much of a fan to give an objective perspective here, but Misa is an irreplaceable bassist for several reasons; even if you found someone that could swap between pick/slap as seamlessly as her and could do long slides as clean as her, the odds that they also happen to play a 5-string are pretty low. Akane is less impossible to replace (as evidenced by being the only member to ever BE replaced for a show), but you definitely need someone special. I'm not a drum expert but two qualities I've seen attributed to her drumming is that she chooses relatively complex patterns and she hits the kit hard. For me there's almost an emotion to her drumming that I don't hear from other drummers and while if they made several different studio version of their songs with different drummers I'm not confident I could consistently detect which was her playing, I think I could eventually train myself to do so. I will say, whenever their cover of Honey comes up on my play list, it always strikes me as uncanny, for whatever that's worth.

    • @Chan_Fry
      @Chan_Fry  5 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the comment. Yes, MISA definitely corrected me quickly on that one. :-) I agree with you about Akane -- that she intentionally chooses complex patterns -- you can't just take any studio drummer and replace her at a moment's notice; even accomplished drummers, I think, would need TIME in order to internalize all the intentional changes to the drumming.
      (I know I'm not enough of a musician to be able to tell if one of the members was replaced on a studio track, but I like to think I'd notice if one of them was replaced in a live performance.) :-)

    When I listen to other bands. I do find that the drums can overpower a song. But I never feel that with Band Maid. Each song may have a moment for everybody to shine but never over power. MISA and Kanami can have their solo moments but it is rare to hear Akane have a solo spot. But without her we wouldn't have the glue that keeps the song not only sticking together but it's never tacky or over done. Saiki I think is so much better in the more modern songs as a singer and performer. However listening to how good they were and yet still mange to push the boundaries is part of the joy and fun. Nice comments about the MV again that often pass me by until I re watch them.

    YOLO kind of goes from regret to looking forward(the change with the colors). Lyrics end with "it starts from now".
    The back trio always bring the fire 🤟 their instrumentals are highly underrated
    Agree that the vocalist makes a HUGE difference for me. Miku has grown enough as a guitarist that she could probably now play that 2nd Kanami guitar line if it didn't interfere with what she has to sing. Akane was still probably getting used to using her double bass pedals(she wasn't proficient on the early on she said).
    YOLO was their first official released instrumental. 2nd one was Onset(on a limited printed bonus for people who bought Glory and Bubble together)

    I saw in another video from a chronist of music and bands and that was dedicated to the first years of Band Maid, apparently Miku write the song after a devastating earthquake in Kumamoto the city where she birth, and the song try to be positive message to the survivors of that tragedy, so the set of the video is a simile of the destruction that the event leave.

    • @Chan_Fry
      @Chan_Fry  5 месяцев назад

      I hadn't heard the Kumamoto connection before; that's interesting. The timing, at least, would be appropriate... The earthquake(s) was in April 2016, just as the band would have been finishing Brand New Maid, and the YOLO single came out in November 2016. And that certainly explains the set design. Thanks!
