  • The diner started as a horse-drawn wagon in Providence, Rhode Island in 1872. Soon, an industry of "lunch car" manufacturers sprang up in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Worcester Lunch Car Company produced 651 diner cars from 1907 to 1957 - less than 100 are still in operation today.
