This episode I show you how to build a simple farmhouse out of xps foam for your tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer, of Frostgrave. In this episode I complete the structure in a few hours of build time. Next episode will be paint and embellishments.

Tip for painting cardboard: seal it with cheap hairspray first. This adds a sealant layer that prevents warping enough to handle paint or the mod podge layer. We used to use hairspray in my art classes instead of the spray sealants for inbetween layers and the finished products! It also works well as a spray glue that can hold chalk pastel dust for some cool effects. I always have a large, cheap, strong hairspray in my art supplies.

I find that if you peel of the paper of non-easy peel foam core it's rips/divots create AMAZING stucco texture.
I am new to modeling and still trying to find my way through with different tutorials. I am so glad to find your collection of videos explaining your methods using foam verses using real wood. It is so much more forgiving and not having to deal with fumes from wood stains. I especially liked your approach using the pen method in creating the wood grain verses the wire brush. I'm looking forward to starting my next project using your techniques. Thanks again for sharing and looking forward to seeing more of your videos.

I just used this tutorial to build a quick hut for my LL game. Thank you so much for sharing your videos. I went for a less clean more ramshackle build, but your framework was perfect. Obviously I'm not as quick or smooth as you are, but I feel accomplished regardless. Thank you again.

I really appreciate your creativity encouragement! People need that. Create! Historical modeling is GREAT, but it's more important to just do. As you said, "It's FANTASY." I will model historically when I diorama my tank models in the ETO, not when I create my D&D terrain!

Just build on of these while following your video. I used cardboard for the structure and styrofoam for the "wood". Mine has a thatched roof made of an old teddy-fur-jacket. Thanks for this amazing and simple build!

Today I received my Proxxon Thermocut after seeing you use it in your videos and getting beautiful results. I look forward to assembling it and using it later today. This will definitely speed up the cutting process! The reason why Legos or building blocks are fun is because you can just grab from the pile an assemble right away, but when you build models and terrain from scratch and cannot create or cut your blocks efficiently then it quickly becomes a both messy and way too time-consuming endeavour. This will be much more fun now! Thanks, Black Magic Crafts. I still have to go through many of your videos, but every one is a motivation!

That looks really good. Wouldn't be too difficult to use this technique as just the roof for a more boxy building (with vertical walls, I mean) either. Just... add more walls! And add wood planks at the the borders, and where it looks cool. Nice.

Its interesting that you mentioned the architectural style because I was thinking that it looked a little bit like a Scandinavian-style Longhouse; considering they're described as looking a lot like a boat turned upside down, the roof does sort of have that aesthetic to it. In any case, it looks really cool and in the end that's what really matters.
P.S.
I'm guessing, based on some of the up close photos, that you applied heat in some way to get the shingles to curl like that and the door to look that distressed. Whatever you used though, it did a nice job of weathering.
Yup, heat....but I'll explain more in detail later as it could easily ruin a project if not done right.

The structure you made here is called a Gruben Haus or grub house. The reason for this is that 3 feet or so of the building was in the ground. By the way I don’t think these were used as a house. The archaeological evidence suggests that these buildings were used as work shops & not a home. Wish I could post some pics of the one I made....oh well... Anyway, keep up the good work you have some fantastic ideas!
My Ukrainian family built and lived in houses just like this when they immigrated to Canada in the late 1800’s. There are still historical villages that have real life examples of these homes on display. They were certainly used as homes as well.

Black Magic Craft I was trying now to use some metal foil and magnets to make some optional parts snap together... and then just having fun and taking ideas off your wonderful channel.
If you have a small, trash brush, you can do a better "stucco" type look such as you used sand for, it can be done rather easily with a thick mix of plaster, sand, and pva until you get a thick paste. Then just dab it in place and you get a better texture.
Of course, you could also, simply, have put wood grain and gaps and just make the walls wooden with the heavier supports.
Yea, I often do stucco with joint compound and glue if I want a more subtle look.....and when I'm being lazy the whole house is planks, lol

Only one question: what kind of sand are you using when giving texture to the front and the back?
@Francesco Lamberti He says play sand, so just the cheap sand you can get for kids sandboxes from the store.If its got pebbles in, you can use a mesh sifter and just run it through and get rid of the big bits and use those for rubble later.

Quick question ... I despise hot glue for various reasons. What glue do you recommend using to glue Foam Core and XPS foam to themselves? XPS to XPS. Foam core to foam core?

3,4,5 triangles only works with 3 and 4 is on the short sides of a right triangle.. and 5 is on the longest side.
Your 4 is actually 3.9. I guess it is close enough.
I.e. 3^2 + (2.5)^2 = (3.9)^2
A way to make it work...
Have it be 4 from base to the peak and have it 6 wide... then the diagonal will be 5.

Thanks, I followed the measurements listed in the vid and my size was off a bit with my triangle being a smidge too long.
I use Vallejo Dark Earth, it's sandy paint, gray, it will work for stucco. One question, why do none of these building have chimneys ?
How would you go about making one with a grass roof or a covering for the planks? I'm running a campaign set in a set of kingdoms based on Viking Age Scandinavia. I am just starting crafting buildings and I want something historically authentic, is their something you would do to get a grass or earthy roof?

Heat gun and extreme caution. It goes from 0 to major damage in the blink of an eye....I didn't mean to whether the door THAT much.

It's funny that you mention a paper layer atop of the foam here. I recently began to pick up the craft myself and noticed that my 1/2 inch XPS foam also has this kind of layer that easily begins to peel as I start crafting. I tried gluing it back down (failed) and have watched many of your videos, but have never seen you talk about it (or perhaps I have missed the one that does as I'm sure it's a small blip you may mention). I'm not sure if you simply do not deal with this problem anymore because of the hot wire table sealing the plastic top layer or if it's just a thing in my local area, but I am unsure if I should remove it for better ease of cutting through the foam and detailing it.
TLDR; It's a bit of a hassle to work around while texturing, should I remove the paper/wax layer on the pink foam or try to keep it on?
I've mentioned it in video before, but insulation foam comes with a protective film on it in some regions. Not where I am, so I've never seen it and therefor never removed it in any videos. But if you have that plastic film on yours, the first thing you should do is peel it off.

Is there a reason you exclusively seem to use foam aside from that's how your shop has kind of evolved and/or it's just your preferred medium? I've thought of tryin to build a house with foam but I also have a surplus of popsicle sticks that I've played around with the idea of using for shingles, trim, etc. I was just curious.
Because I like it better and hate working with things like popsicle sticks. Absolutely despise it.

This build would work well as a modular roof as well....you just may want to think about the door. Might not make sense to have a door on your roof, but maybe if it's like a barn it would not seem weird.

I can't seem to get all the paper off of the foam core. Is this a problem or will the Mod Podge take care of the little bit of paper left on the foam? Thanks
You want to buy Redi brand foamcore from Dollar Tree. It's designed for the paper to come off easily. If you don't have access to that store you'll have to use other methods to get the paper off like water, alcohol, or steam. It's fine to leave the paper on if it's getting covered by something else, but if you want to texture the foamcore then obviously the paper needs to be gone.
Hi! I was wondering if you've ever made a video on that lady statue in the fountain? I'm assuming it's similar to when you transformed Maleficent into a statue but I've been looking through your videos and I can't seem to find it. ^^;
I did not. It's another disney princess. I hacked it up, made the fountain base out of foamcore, and painted the whole thing like stone.
would you consider building a mongolian styled hut? i want to build som huts to use with ogre-themed terrain for my aos gameboard, but i haven't found much in way of inspiration

Hey there. I'm a new member (Joao Canela) of TCG facebook page and already posted a photo of my attempt to make one.
I'm going to paint it, but before I would like to ask something.
I don't have mod podge. I can order online but will take many days do get here.
So, can I basecoat it with just black paint? Can I use black spray can to basecoat? The spray is water based and don't melt the foam core.
Or you think it's best to wait for the modpodge?
This comment is old, but modpodge is the best- in leu of that, you can use 50% white school glue, and 50% base paint color (usually white or black) never spray paint foam of any sort, it'll melt it. And, depending on where you're at, you should be able to get modpodge at walmart, paying attention to whether it's matte, gloss or that other one I never use lol.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I never see Jeremy's glue gun make those pesky thin strands of glue between what he's gluing and the gun's nozzle. Is it the glue quality or something else ?

O but you took you long enough I had to buy 250 buck in dwarven forge. But you buildings are still more detailed. You are true master of the miniature world.
you need to upgrade your glue gun, get one made for carpentry. I have an old one that heats up in seconds and the clue comes out like it is shooting out water! I think they're about $60-$80 new, not sure, the one I have I got from my Dad. We used it since I was a kid working for him doing cabinets and I kept thinking glue guns were broken but it turns out the one's we used were just expensive.
You don’t want a glue gun that hot for working with foam, they melt the foam. Coming out like water is not a good thing for this work. I’ve tried dozens of glue guns from cheap to expensive. This little guy is ideal for this type of work. Perfect temp for foam, can apply small precise amounts, has a metal tip for blending, and an on off switch.
i would like to request if you sometime could you make a flipped longboat style meadhall like the companions hall in skyrim, tried several ways and none worked

You know I can't cut a straight line to save my life. A ruler is law for me and even then it's hit and miss.
I really want to make this kind of stuff but a proxxon table is pretty expansive. does anyone know a way around it or how i can get a really cheap one?
Steal one? the price is the price, maybe you can find one used....but don't buy a cheap knock off, they are a waste of money and you are better of without one if that's all you are willing to spend.
