  • This was an amazing hike climbing nearly 1000' vertical feet in under a mile with stunning ocean views the whole way up. The trail twists and turns along the shear rock face of the mountain. Steep cliffs, narrow trails, iron rungs, and amazing views are par for the course on the Precipice trail.
    If you'd like to take another look at the time lapse from the summit it starts at 23:16.
    This was a great hike for all of us and an especially important hike for Old Man. He had hiked the trail once when he was younger and came back to conquer the trail as... well... and old man.
    As always, if you'd like to follow along on a map please head to www.fathergoat... to see the GPS tracks on a map or to download tracks to stick in Google Earth. Pulling the tracks up in Google Earth is really neat as you can see a 3d map of our route up the mountain.

      Sweet! Have a great time on the trail today Chris, it's a blast! (p.s. I hope you don't get caught in the rain we're having today. That'd certainly add a degree of difficulty to the trail :) )

    I hiked the Beehive last October and hope to do the Precipice this fall. I loved this, the conversation had me laughing and the video shows exactly what I’ll be up against when I’ll be on the Precipice, informative and fun!

      Thanks for the kind words, Lori! The Beehive trail is like a mini-Precipice - if you liked Beehive you'll LOVE the Precipice trail. Good luck and have fun!

    That's really cool. We went up in October and climbed that trail. I honestly didn't expect it to be that steep but once your up there a ways it's a lot easier to go up then climb back down. It was an exhilarating trail to say the least. If we ever do that again I'll have to get a camera like yours. Great video!

      Thanks a lot Ashley, I appreciate the kind words.
      The Precipice Trail is an essential Acadia trail. This was the first time I had the opportunity to hike it but I'll definitely be headed back this summer. I hiked the Beehive trail with my daughter last year and she absolutely loved it! I'll bring her out to the Precipice Trail this summer as it's longer and a bit more challenging.
      This hike was filmed on a GoPro Hero 3 Black. It's a great little camera despite not being very state of the art. You could probably pick one up fairly cheap on Craigslist or Uncle Henry's. Honestly, a new-ish cell phone will take some fairly amazing video on a bright sunny day. If you post the video of your hike be sure to swing by and share the link.
      Happy trails!

    Nice video. I’ve always wanted to hike Precipice & Beehive. The only thing stopping me is my CRIPPLING FEAR OF HEIGHTS. Thankfully other people do it and post on RUclips!

      Thanks for the kind words.
      I climbed the Beehive trail with my wife who has a terrible fear of heights. It was challenging for her to finish, and she might have closed her eyes while I guided her through a couple of parts, but she made it all the way up and was very happy once she had (happy that she did it or just happy that it was over, not sure ;) ).
      Thanks for checking us out!
      Happy Trails

    Great Video! Really showed true perspective - just getting into hiking and I love it but Im not sure on some of those sketchy super high narrow climbs with the fall right there at 7:00-9:00 mins was killer - I dont have a crazy fear of heights but watching that part brought my oh hell no out a bit plus the wind. Not sure if I could do that, give you all alot of credit. Thanks for posting

      My wife has a terrible fear of heights but was able to overcome and make it up the Beehive trail (think mini Precipice). Both are tons of fun and both are highly recommended if you find yourself in the area.
      Thanks for stopping by, happy trails!

      Glad you liked it! It can definitely be vertigo inducing in spots. I don't really have an issue with heights but the ledge around 15:40 did make the palms a bit sweaty.

    I want to do this in July of this year, 2017. Just how old was the old man you mentioned? I bet I'm older. I'm older than anyone......hahahaha

    • @FatherGoat
      @FatherGoat  7 лет назад

      "Old Man" in the video was 60 years old. I won't comment on his level of physical preparedness except to say that climbing mountains isn't a typical affair. He was celebrating hiking the trail at 16 and 60! If you can walk a few flights of stairs, climb a ladder, and touch your toes (not all at the same time, of course) then the only difference will be how many breaks you take on the way up. Best of luck!

      I just had my 70th birthday. I hike every weekend up mountains from 1,200 feet to 4000 footers. I just started winter hiking with crampons and find it fun but cumbersome with bringing so much stuff in the backpack. I'm getting ready for a 2 night backpacking trip up Mt. Washington, my 3rd time hiking up. I might take the train down....my knees will appreciate it. thanks for responding!!

    That's the steepest trail I've seen, bar none.

    Do you think Alex Honnold could hike this trail without the aid of any bars?

    woah dude.....hold that camera a bit slower....zooming back and forth messes up my gyroscope.......I'm getting a little dizzy but it's a great video that shows the trail well!

    • @FatherGoat
      @FatherGoat  7 лет назад

      ha ha, you are spot on with that comment. This was fairly early on in my trail recording and didn't realize just how much the camera whipped around when mounted to my head. I've been working at it and like to think things have smoothed out a bit in subsequent videos. "messes up my gyroscope"... great way to phrase it!

      We all have a learning curve with this new technology. I'm a real beginner myself. I'm still on "stand still" camera mode.

    How long did it take to finish the whole trail? Why does everyone have such a big backpack. I thought it is a day hike

    • @FatherGoat
      @FatherGoat  5 лет назад

      It took nearly 5 hours to complete the loop. It could have been done quicker but we took our time on the way up and spent quite a bit of time relaxing at the top - it is most certainly a day hike.
      As for our packs... you know what they way about a guy with a big backpack, right? (That he's carrying it because it's the best pack he owns for that particular hike.)
