The rest of the world uses the celsius scale. Zero celsius is 32 degrees fahrenheit. It was below freezing early that morning, so for the purposes of his VOA audience, it was "subzero." It took me a while, when visiting in Canada or England, to adjust to their "zero" and "single digit" temperatures, which were from 32 to 50 degrees fahrenheit.

Middleburg, VA? Well, maybe, but I'm not so sure. Both were from Texas (Bonnie actually came from a fairly affluent family. Clyde, not nearly so much) so Middleburg VA seems a long ways to venture from their patch to rob a bank.
Great glimpse into a fabulous village and event!
"Subzero temperatures"? It was in the mid-30s! In my 10 years in that town, it's NEVER been "subzero."
It is, however, a very nice place to live.
