- Inspired by the story of the Western front, spring 45, when Germany was at last stand. British sent their new Centurion tanks to the frontline, but they arrived too late and never got used, what is supposed to do - match and destroy Tigers tanks. So today, we jump into a what-if scenario, where these two go head to head, on a new map, to find out if Centurion could be a worthy nemesis and annihilate might Tiger tank. This is 25 vs 25, tanks vs tanks.
A group of Tigers manages to ambush Centurions, taking down several but soon the tides will turn, and the epic show will get started.

As soon as the battle started, radio traffic would have meant RAF Typhoons being dispatched, so even if the Tigers got the upper hand they would have been totally destroyed minutes later!
Statistically, CAS was very poor at actually destroying tanks in WW2. They had a low hit rate and an even lower chance to critically damage the vehicle. The majority of CAS' effect on tanks was the morale and psychological impact it had, while also preventing many units from moving during the day.
@@bluntcabbage6042 True, but an enemy that's reluctant to manoeuvre because they don't wish to attract CAS' attention is a much easier target.
@@AdamSmith-kq6ys It's different on a division level for maneuvering. It's not the same maneuvering as when a platoon of tanks zig zag or hop between groups of trees, it's moreso a long, exposed column of vehicles trundling down a road with little cover. For a unit as big as, in some cases, entire brigades, it's safer to remain dug in with anti-air defenses rather than tear up all of your fortifications and make yourself even more exposed by trying to relocate.
That and also the Tigers would have had a very difficult time beating the Centurion. The frontal armour was far too difficult for the Tiger to penetrate. Whereas the Centurion could easily knock out a Tiger from a further distance.

@@vizcapricilliatrisman1385 it's even more bizarre than that movie. The way this npc just "falls apart" is super creepy.
Very surprising outcome, crazy how well matched they are
Or how terribly coded it is as a simulation. The Centurion APDS round is nearly twice as fast as an 88mm round. Most of those hits to the Centurions looked frontal, based on the actual armour the front hull should always bounce an 88mm round and the turret would need the APCR round close range and a bit of favourable positioning.

@trueblueprussian 23 Yes they were. Tigers were very rarely seen on the battlefield due to low production numbers, and the Tiger's power was greatly exaggerated by German propaganda. Germany didn't have much fuel too
@trueblueprussian 23 does the tiger 2 a decent tank also is it true that the tank break down if its in the bumpy road?
Ive been fascinated on tanks recently so I'm doing research just for fun
1/3 rd would break down or get blown up by Thunderbolts or Typhoons. 2/3 rds would be low on gas then be attacked by Lightnings or Beaufighters. Dont think the Germans fielded that many all at once. Usually a mixed bag with Panthers , PZ 4s and Sturmgeshutz was but 25 fully op Tigers would have been a miracle.
It would be a miracle, as long as there are no allied fighter bombers.

Centurions are highly mobile tanks, that should move fast and outflank (only from one side) the slow, big and clumsy formation of Tiger I, de-tracking and hitting the sides and the back of Tigers-I . Also firing from a longer distance, thanks to better optics and more modern accurate cannon shooting APSF (as it happened in the battle of the "Valley of Tears", between Israel and Syria).
The first Centurions of the 1940s did not have "more precise guns and better optics"... The israeli Centurions were modified to update them to the historical period in which they were found

Why was the MK 1 chosen? Very very few were produced and they were actually replaced on the production line by the MK2's which had better armour. The video game shows nothing more than standing in a line and slogging it out with Brits in open fields and Germans behind bush/tree lines. What happened to tactics, manoeuvre, and battlefield co-ordination? Pretty poor really.

I'd have thought a straight slugging match with both sides just going toe to toe was an obvious win for the Pzkw VI. Thicker armour and a larger gun. Normally in battle the overall strategic position dictates one side needs to take the other's position. Even so, no sensible Centurion commander just sits there and tries to slug it out with a Tiger. He would use his superior mobility to outflank his enemy?

Not a bad idea
It would be all aircraft and Canadian and American Armor the British Armor were pretty much done in 1944 . Their Infantry were mediocre at best. Except for some Guard units like the Irish Guards and Lord Lovats Commandos Montgomery was playing a waiting game . Special mention must be given to the 6th Airborne Division for exceptional valor at Arnhem Bridge later on but the English stepped out of fighting till the end of the war. Political upheval in Parliment by socialists and horrendous losess of the 1st World War were still prevassive in Britian by 1944 . Even Churchill commented to his cronies that the United States would never get accountability of the Lend Lease program when it was almost assured that we would win the War with Germany. In effect saying they had been fighting since 1939 not the US.

Was this maybe based on Mark Felton's recent video? Saying the Centurion was designed as the Tiger's nemesis but sadly saw no action in WW2
If the centurion had an 84mm gun it could penetrate a tiger easier but if had 105mm it would just take one shell it instantly destroy the tiger
The only thing I will say is that those are not the Centurion Mk I with the 17-pdr like history says. That’s the Centurion Mk III with the 84mm 32-pdr, which was five years after the fact. Just saying this is not a fair fight. But then again, there hasn’t been fair fights since Napoleon.

I think 3 Centurion tanks will destroy 25 Tigers! Their 115 mm armour peircing rounds will go through them like a knife through butter!
Centurion only received 105mm guns in the late 1950s/early 1960s. The first couple of marks had the 76mm 17-pdr gun which was replaced by the 84mm 20-pdr gun from about 1948 on the mark III. Even so it's a bit of an uneven match with 1942 Tigers vs post-war Centurions, the Tigers only won because the Centurions used crap tactics instead of trying to exploit their advantages.

Except in real life it wouldn't do shit.
Syria bought Tigers after the war, used them in the Golan heights against I believe a mix of Centurion and other tanks. It did not go well for the Tigers in real life.
They didn't have Tigers, they had just some panzer IVs, Stugs and maybe some Jagdpanzer IV.

Ever heard of battle tactics? I don't know how many scenes had a tank haul up, right by a depression they could drop into for protection.
The centurion you show in the game is the mk.3, not the mk.1. the centurion mk.3 has a 82mm barrel and a stabilizer, apart from the fact that the turret is different.
Could not help noticing that the tanks that skulked in the treelines survived better than those that put themselves in an open field! Also mistake to bunch up. I think the Tigers positioned better.
I’d just call in a strike by some RAF rocket carrying typhoons
British would have destroyed tigers and then went for their tea, tigers would have struggled to see Centurion let alone hit it.
This was a AWESOME Battle. Its too Bad the Centurion's Lost. But Its alright. As The Centurion Tank was a More Simple an Easy an Reliable Design then the tiger tank. Also, If this was TRULY REAL, I seriously believe the Centurion's would've won. As the Centurion Tanks would have the Superior Artillery and Air support of The British and American Army's... As of course US and UK Air an Artillery support was devastating to the germans. And even if Some of the shots/attacks Missed, They were still deeply Unnerving to the germans. But yes. the Centurion is 1 Cool Tank. But I think I Like the Comet Tank jus a Bit more. Also, Getting tanks an Ammo and fuel for them to the front lines was REAL Hard for the germans at this point. With the Way our Air support/Close Air Support was Ripping up their Supply lines. But yep. AWESOME video.
British: YESS now we have strong tanks...let's hunt some Tigers
Hunting Result: 3 Tigers Survive....25 Cents out of actions😂
As Always....Epic Video👏👏👍👍
That engagement, in terms of money, probably cost the Germans far more than it cost the British.
Irl the Cents would have kicked the shit out of the Tigers from a LONG ways away with APDS, but it's Men of War and it's dumb with the ranges so it's all good.
At least the Centurion gave the Tiger I a run for it's money. By the way that was a 20pdr (83.8mm) gun
the one in the video might be the Centurion Mk2 as it was the variant that introduced the turret design that we know of.
In reality the Centurions would have easily destroyed the Tigers. The Centurion was just a superior tank in virtually every way. Not to mention that in the video they are Centurion Mk.IIIs which had an even more powerful 20 pounder gun. Which were far more effective than any German WWII AT gun. The Centurion Mk. III would have massacred the Tiger way before the Tiger would even see it.
The Tiger I would still be a match for the Centurion early variant. Anyway, the Centurion can be easly destroyed by the Tiger II and other german tank destroyers of the late 1944 and 1945. Plus, the 20 pounder isn't the best anti-tank gun. The german 128 mm anti tank gun was the best of the war.
@@jinglejangle3287 No it wouldn't really, the Tiger I would have struggled against the frontal armour of a Centurion whereas the Centurion would little trouble with the Tiger I. The Tiger I's frontal armour was notoriously vulnerable to the 17 pounder or 90mm gun on the Pershing, the 85mm gun on the T-34, heck even the 76mm on the Sherman and Hellcat could knock out a Tiger's frontal armour. The Centurion outclassed the Tiger in almost every way.
The Centurion could also knock out a Tiger II and German tank destroyers with relative ease even with a 20 pounder. if they were within 1000 yards (which was standard combat ranges back then)
The 128 mm may have been the best German gun on paper, but it saw limited action. The Soviet 100mm and 122mm guns were just as if not better than the 128mm.
@@Frserthegreenengine the 76 mm could not pen the Tiger, or maybe yes but almost at point black. The 85 mm of the t-34/85 can do it but at relatively close distance, when the 88 can kill it from afar.
The Centurion is superior to the Tiger I (not II), I'm not saying the opposite, but the Tiger I is perfectly able to destroy it if the centurion is 1 km or less away. The Early Centurion frontal armor is angled but it's even thinner than the Panther's one.
About german late war tank destroyers: a Jagdpanther, for example, has the latest version of the 88 mm AT gun, which is way better than the one on the Tiger I (it's the same gun of the tiger II). So it can kill a Centurion befere the British tank even see it.
About the 128 mm AT gun: it wasn't the best just on paper. Otto Carius (one of the many German tank aces) destroyed a Sherman (If I remember correctly) which was behind a house. The shell fucking penetrated the house and destroyed the Sherman.
The Russian 100mm and 122mm were also inferior to the latest 88mm, because it was a freaking speed shell
@@jinglejangle3287 Nope. The 76mm could knock out a Tiger from the front at 700m, the T-34-85 could also do the same at similar ranges. 500-1000m was considered standard tank engagements at the time.
As for the Centurion it certainly had more advantages than the Tiger did. As for being able to destroy a Centurion perfectly. No. Side armour yes it would but frontal? No. The Tiger I's 88 couldn't even penetrate the frontal armour of an M4 Sherman if the Sherman was angled at 30 degrees, although it could just hit the sides and that would do it. Head on it had no difficulty against the Sherman obviously.
And the Centurion was not inferior to the Tiger II, early ones maybe, but certainly not the later ones. But even the early ones could still knock out a Tiger II from the sides easily at long distances. The Tiger II World certainly be inferoior to Centurions armed with the Royal Ordinance 105mm L7 gun, it is considered of the best tank guns in history and certainly far superior to any WWII German tank gun. It was so good that even the Americans used it on their early Abrham tanks.
Also we really should not believe everything that a commander like Otto Carius says word for word, German tank commanders are known to exaggerate things or claim to achieve things without verification. They are the subject of Nazi Propaganda who like to exaggerate their claims, actions and kills further. So unless I am given evidence that this happened I do not believe for a second that he destroyed a Sherman behind a house with a Jadgtiger. If I am given evidence then I'll change my mind.
@@Frserthegreenengine about the 76 mm gun, yes I was wrong it was able to penetrate a Tiger I frontally but only if it used "special" shells, like the High-Velocity Armour-Piercing M93, which were present in very small numbers. Anyway, tank engagement on the western or Italy front were indeed on about 500/1000 meters, but on the eastern front tank engagements from 1500/2000 meters or more were not rare.
About the Centurion, a Tiger I could penetrate it frontally if close enough (obviously the Centurion can pen the Tiger from a greater distance). I consider this fact astonishing, in fact the Centurion was a brand new tank while the production of the Tiger I ceased in 1944. For the Tiger II, obviously it had no problem against the early version of the Centurion (which was the one supposed to fight in ww2) but it's a bit unfair comparing the Tiger II against cold war era Centurions with brand new guns, don't you think?
About Otto Carius, you can find everything you want about him in the book "Tigers in the mud". It's his diary from the war, which also has official documents at the end of the book. His experience is realistic, he fought from the start of operation Barbarossa as a loader in the pz. 38/t then as a commander in the Tiger I and finally, after a period in hospital being wounded while in recon out of the tank, he served as commander of a Jagdtiger, impenetrable from the front. He destroyed 150 tanks and maybe (not verified) a plane. He was a good soldier, he loved his country but he was not a nazi. After the war he worked as pharmacist.

They'd said centurion is the best tank. Is that true?
Good, BUT HOLY FUCK IRL THIS IS EZ CENTURION WIN. The tigers seem to be immune from the sabot that has over twice as much penetration than the thickest part of armour on the tiger. Also, theoretically the tiger couldn’t penetrate the centurion anywhere unless they where using APCR, which of course is a sub-calibre round so it would struggle with the heavy sloping of the centurions armour. Also, according to my sources at least, the centurions mantlet is 152mm thick.
Pretty sure the centurions had a stabiliser so they could shoot on the move but like that would make any difference tho
It does have a stabilizer but they were advised not to shoot while moving it was not perfect stabilizer like modern tanks have is more closely related to the jumbos gyroscopic stabilizer made as a Fail-Safe if they needed to fire on the move
If only the British and French had Centurion tanks in 1940.
