- Many people take the application of stains for granted. They just slap it on, wipe it off, and are satisfied with the look. But there is more!!
If you follow the directions, and perform the proper steps from sanding, surface preparation, product application, to finish, you will find that the results are far better than what you have achieved previously. And the information has always been there, RIGHT ON THE LABEL!
In this video I used Dark Walnut stain from Varathane, along with a pre-conditioner, and finally a gloss lacquer spray finish from Deft. I was able to get all of these products at my local Home Depot.

Oh i thought the walnut piece in the beginning was a finished example of the pine with finish. Got me good lol
Was not intended.
In my Renovation of my upstairs, I needed to stain 200 feet of pine baseboard along with several pieces of casing. To match the existing trim I had to use Zar wood stain. My first test blotched. Using Minwax wood conditioner required it to be stained before it was completely dry. Long story short, I found a awesome product called Charles Neil Blotch Control. It’s alkyd based and doesn’t have a time limit for applying stain. Worth checking.
I'll check it out. I have heard good things about alkyds
Thank you this was helpful as I am going to be doing the same process with all my interior doors. Unfinished pine and will use the dark walnut stain. Good video!
Thanks!!
Would it make the wood darker, perhaps more even, to use two coats of stain? Or will the wood only absorb the single coat? Thanks.
I've had good results with a second coat. It has to be within 2 hours or after 24 hours. Leaving it on longer before wiping also also can provide for a deeper color.
Right because it doesn't look very consistent
Thanks for that.
Nice tutorial but unfortunately the finished result doesn't have the signature look appearance of walnut!!
Nor the price!
To be fair to you, I wasn't aware that there is "Walnut" and Curly Walnut" I've only recognised Curly. Now I see the difference I see I have a walnut TV cabinet as well as a Curly Walnut clock!! So, my apologies. You did a great job.
Looking good Scott!
Thanks 👍
Beautiful
Thanks!
@@DadItYourselfDIY going to use the same method on my replacement columns on my front porch
@thehound1359 Very nice!
Looks great!
I'm happy with the results.
Hey question, would this work on the -fake- wood from IKEA or does it have to be real wood? I got two shelves that are reddish looking , and wanted them to look walnut color instead.
I'm not sure. Probably not. Stain soaks into the pores of the wood. If there is nothing to absorb or it's MDf, then it will just look mottled or sit on the surface.
@@DadItYourselfDIY hmm good point , I wonder if paint would be better then.
There are some very interesting paint techniques to get the wood grain look, or you could wrap it in contact paper: homedepot.sjv.io/zaZYBx or wood veneer: homedepot.sjv.io/P0J7kM
Very nice but not close to looking like walnut its pine no sham
Got me.. but for the money..
Can you do it on reverse
Make Walnut look like Pine?
How much surface is covered by a liter of stain?
Depends on how dark you want it, and tge type of wood. But it goes a long way.
@@DadItYourselfDIY thanks a lot!
What about the burnt splotchiness? It's obviously not walnut.
Obviously it isn't, and was never passed off as such.
I'm not a pro but I do know pine limitations and basic cherry, walnut, golden oak look. This clearly isn't walnut. Just a dark brown stain
@RokkuAni Yup. Not perfect, but when spending money on Walnut is unnecessary.
You called the video "turning pine into walnut". Hence the comments you are getting, since it doesn't resemble walnut. There are ways to get it closer than this, but they require different products and techniques than these.
Very helpful, thank you!!
(Just ignore the negative naysayers! 🙄😋)
And there are alot!
@@DadItYourselfDIY unfortunately!
But getting more positive!
Not sure why everyone says this looks terrible. This is the closest I’ve seen someone take pine and make it look walnutish.
I do think it has to do with the quality of lumber as well, buying wood without knots is key, but your process was really good as well.
The prep and the use of the wood conditioner are what makes the difference. Using a clear pine is also key.
Brown craft paper? Like a paper bag?
Yes!
That looks terrible...! Looks like there are burnt parts to it!
It's hard to show on camera. The final product was nearly flawless.
You can't seriously think this looks good or even close to walnut
Never said it was.. 🤣
This looks like a cheap piece of pine with stain on it. Stained pine always looks cheap. Your click bait title is dishonest.
Thanks for your feedback and watching my video.
That wood is not from HOME DEPOT..it's too STRAIGHT...lol...sorry
Haha.. I buy the radiata select pine for this exact reason. The other stuff is too warped, full of knots, and the time spent milling it is not worth the price difference!
Looked terrible.
Thanks. I appreciate the feedback.
But... Home depot kickbacks
@BGraves Well, no one wants to pay Walnut prices for some of my projects. And yes, if people click my links I received a commission, this is clearly stated in the video description.
