This was a time when people actually help each other and didn’t talk about each other, they showed love and understanding and helped each other, not today’s world, if you have anyone that actually cares about you, it is a gift from heaven.
I was born and raised in Clay County KY. My Dad and his family was from Floyd County. My Dad worked in the coal mines his whole life . My Mamaw's house was at Drift in Floyd County and back in the 90s we raised a big garden with her. One day after working hard picking green beans my Mother, my niece and me decided to take a break and travel to Butcher Holler in Johnson County to see Loretta's homeplace. Herman Webb saw us as we were driving past his store and he followed us up to the homeplace. He was very handsome and so polite and so gracious. Herman took us inside the little house and we had such a wonderful visit with him. When it was time to go we all went outside to get in our car and I'll be darned if we didn't have a flat tire. Herman changed that flat tire for us that day. I will never forget Herman Webb and his kindness. I know that Herman, Loretta,Clara,Ted and the rest of the family who have passed are in heaven and I bet they are all singing together once again.
I never got the chance to meet him but I met his daughter. Me and Clyde ran into her a few hours after we left and she talked to us nearly 2 hours. such a sweet woman.

I'm from Harlan County myself, this episode brings back so many memories of home. Hits me right in the heart. You can take the hill folk out of the hills, but you can't take the hills out of the heart.
Like so many other families that were living this very same lifestyle in Kentucky and West Virginia the mountains and the people are special. They lived a hard life but they were good people who helped one another and shared what they had with each other. This is humble beginnings that you will never forget. Not everyone got to become famous but the ones who did were still humble in their entire lives because they never forgot where they came from. I’m from these humble people who still love their mountain life and are thankful to have been a part of it. This home was a reflection of many people who are fortunate enough to have lived in this type of beginnings. ❤❤❤

Amazing video, Rick! Thank you so much for sharing. My brother lives in Austin, KY and the next time I’m there, I definitely plan to visit Loretta’s family homestead in Van Lear.
Really interesting video...I enjoyed it immensely. I live in New Jersey and most likely will never make it down there, but your video made it feel like I was there! Thanks for posting it. R.I.P. Loretta ❤🙏

Well my mamaw Amy Hammonds Gallagher died at 92 years old in 1997 and she used to babysit Loretta when Loretta was a little baby for Ms Webb. mamaw lived in the holler near the Webb family and later they moved to Inez Kentucky and then they moved to West Virginia where Papaw continued in the coal mines... they had 15 children one of them my daddy, buddy Gallagher. It was either a coal mining moonshining or movin on Down the Line ❤
ATTENTION: Those that are wondering why I didn't Record the whole tour... basically the Last time someone made a video there they tried to make the people of that area look dumb. But luckily for me I got to because they knew my attentions was the exact opposite. They asked me not to record everything because if people watched the whole tour they wouldn't be interested in visiting. They also didn't want me to have the camera in their face the whole time. But Since they allowed me to video I respected their request to not video everything and to keep them out of the video much as possible. if you want to see the whole tour well...we'll.... GO VISIT. I recommend it. So much better than my video and you get to actually talk yo Lorettas neace and nephew and ask them all kinds of questions.
Understand. I live in another southern state and some tried to make us look dumb with a lot of negativity. You guys handled it respectfully. My grandparents were dirt poor, too, but many people in the south were poor in the early 1900’s.
My grandmother went to a similar 1 room school house in a small community (called Cedar Hill) between Sonora TX and Junction TX. Back in the 1920’s And Lorettas niece, sounds just like Loretta Lynn talking. Almost to a T
Im glad she let you film, She was nice to let you film, Loretta Lynn was one of my favorite singers alongside with pasty cline. Again sorry for the misunderstanding.
I have answered this already multiple times.. but I understand if you haven't seen it. So basically she didn't want me to be in her face with the camera and neither did Lorettas nephew. I know I didn't explain that in the video like I should but I also didn't want to the video to have bunch of words explaining everything. But everything I done in the video is totally fine with them. I actually got to sit with her for 2 hours after the tour closed and talk to her. Lovely people.
@@rickykaren oh yea I didn't see that my bad, and that's very cool you not only got to visit there but also go to talk to them personally. Forgive me for what I said I had no idea was just going by what I saw in the video so I do apologize. I'll re edit my comment. Hope you have a happy Thanksgiving. And again I do apologize.
My grandad on my mom side Nimrod Workman and my aunt Phyllis played in the movie Coal Miners daughter. My granddad sung at funeral amazing Grace, and my aunt played Lorettas mom in the movie.
Love Loretta and the movie ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ and love this video but it’s a shame how dirty, dungy and unkept the house and store are! I was shocked! I wish there was some way the family/friends or community can raise the funds to make it look nice. I’d be willing to donate…xo
I visited that place years ago. I was appalled with the shape it was in. The store as the video calls it was the company store. There were a few old costumes there. Coal trucks still flying back and forth on the road. A shame she wouldn’t put money back in her area like Dolly Parton did. Look at the jobs that would have brought to the area. I met Herman years ago.
Adjusted for inflation, the $328 that was stolen from the store would be $9,145 in 2022 dollars. That had to hurt bad. I wonder if they had insurance for things like that back then? The article said they arrested 2 men. I hope they were able to recover all that money.
My grandfather (mom’s dad Nimrod Workman) played in Coal miners daughter. He sung Amazing Grace at funeral in the home. My aunt ( mom’s baby sis) Phyllis Workman Bowen’s played Loretta’s mom in the movie Coal miners daughter.
Lord , I reckon it was like 1985 or 1986 was last there a Webb told me all there was to know about Loretta and growing up there I live in Tucson Az now from Columbus Ohio but I am a Salyer and have 2nd and 3rd cousins in Salyersville Kentucky not to fur from you all My grandpa was Akle and my grandpa was Ethel Montgomery Im just an ole hillbilly myself
My grandfather was a coal miner in eastern KY lost a leg in the mine. Since he couldn’t work in the mines anymore he went west with a wife and 6 kids to CA. When she mentioned the last name of Blair my ears perked up I have numberious Blairs in my ancestry. Its sad that that dress is so dirty in the store. But it would probably fall apart if cleaned with its age.
This was a time when people actually help each other and didn’t talk about each other, they showed love and understanding and helped each other, not today’s world, if you have anyone that actually cares about you, it is a gift from heaven.

Loretta'a song "That's Where I Learned To Pray" talks about the school & the church house being the same building 🥰🥰
Thanks I liked your video and hope I get to visit someday
Thank you
My grandmother went to a similar 1 room school house in a small community (called Cedar Hill) between Sonora TX and Junction TX. Back in the 1920’s
And Lorettas niece, sounds just like Loretta Lynn talking.
@@rickykaren I honestly feel bad now😔 I wrongly accused you I'm so sorry.
Thanks guys. Interesting!
Great video! Thanks
I have the same kind of guitar that belonged to my grandfather. It's a Regal. Anyone know the date of that guitar? I'm thinking 50's??

Thanks you. I Still have a lot to learn on editing and getting good footage
@@rickykaren I loved the drone footage at the beginning and I thought you did very well with it! Hard work gets noticed, you’re doing awesome
We also have Ramey and Webb's
Who hoo! Whopty do! BFD!
loretta lynn is one of my uncles 1st cousin loreta mom and my uncles mom used to write back and forth back in the day
My grandfather was a coal miner in eastern KY lost a leg in the mine.
Love the video
THANK YOU
