- In this video, we will show how to install the OEM Genuine Toyota Towing Hitch in the 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 Toyota RAV4.
We have previously installed the aftermarket Curt Hitch ( • Toyota RAV4 (2019-2024... ) but decided to go for the OEM part instead.
The genuine Toyota hitch was specifically designed for the vehicle. It has 8 chassis attachment bolts as opposed to 4 with aftermarket hitches which divides the load on the vehicle frame more evenly.
The installation is bolt-on but you will need to remove the rear bumper and cut out a hole for the hitch in the bumper. All this will be shown in the video.

Toyota should throw this in pre-installed for how much they charge for the RAV4.

Agreed, especially on the Adventure which has the highest tow capacity: why use that as a selling point when there is no tow hitch?

Thank you for the video. Just to update everyone, you must remove the bumper, since you will be replacing the aluminum part of the bumper with the hitch. The hitch also replaces part of the vehicle tie down. Both the aluminum bumper and steel tie down can be recycled. I think it could be sold on e-bay. One important note is that the instruction manual is printed in a way that you must copy the page before cutting out the template. It took me a while to figure it out. The only other thing that was a bit difficult was trimming the section where the two-piece bumper comes together. It's important to do a good job so the trim piece fits nicely. I used a pair of scissors for cutting remote control car bodies. It's also easier to cut the bumper with sheet metal snips and drill holes in the corners where you plan to start cutting. Good luck! Mine turned out great. Saved me 450.00 at the dealership.

This was a huge help, thank you! Watching this ahead of time proved to myself that I could do it. The lowest quote I got for labor was $900, so this saved me a ton of money! I did accidently cut too high on the bumper, but oh well. A tip for anyone reading this: my jigsaw worked perfectly for cutting the hole...just needed someone else to hold the bumper in place.
Besides removing the tail lights this is the best step by step video for 2019-2021 rav4 oem tow hitch self install on RUclips. Especially when you buy it and you only get page 8 out of 18 from the Toyota instructions ha. This video helped me finish it.
Thank you for this excellent video! It enabled us to have the confidence to install the OEM hitch on Saturday! Which we did! One thing for DIY to consider 1) make sure the bumper cover at the end is over the hitch receiver chain loops - we found that being underneath the vehicle and pulling it over the trailer receiver/hitch allowed to apply proper force to guided bumper cover in proper location. One thing to note, the wiring harness bracket prohibits bumper cover to rest in proper location - so can see bump out. 2) make sure that you add flexible trim cover starting at bottom bumper so seam is not visible. 3) cutting out hole in bumper cover seems to be after thought vs sane manufacturing design decision. Toyota needs to make number interface easier for hitch install. This install I did was for Rav4 Prime
Thank you for the video. Installed my hitch yesterday afternoon with much more confidence. For anyone attempting this install, note that the template provided for the cutout has two issues. One, you have to photo copy one side to be able to attach it together for the full pattern, and two, the measurements in the directions show 15mm on top and 98mm on each side which was wrong. Its 98mm to the center line, not the edges, and I have no idea where they got 15mm on top from. Line the bottom edge up and all works out. If you are not installing the wiring harness plug on the side, you can cut a simple rectangle like shown in this video. I marked the right side of the template, then flipped it over and marked the left side so it was symmetrical. To cut it out I used an oscillating tool, then a pair of bull nose cutters to nip away the seam on the inside so the edging would fit.
When removing the bumper cover from, I used a trim removal tool to open up the channel so the tabs pulled out much easier but I did manage to break one of the green clips when removing the cover. I was able to use a small screw and a washer to repair it though as I was not able to find a replacement for it.
I wish I would have seen this comment before installing mine. So annoying that the template shows a spot to line up with the bottom of the bumper, but at the same time says the template should be 15mm from the molded edge in the bumper. The picture of the cutout in the instructions shows the cutout pretty high, like 15mm from the molded edge, so that's what I went with. I thought maybe the TRD bumper was slightly different and that's where my issue was, but now I have like 1.5" of cutout above the hitch 😑
I like how careful you are not scratching things up.
Don't buy the Curt hitch unless you want to drag the bottom of it every time you go through a dip. The extra clearance the higher mounted receivers give is critical.
I installed a Curt hitch on our 2024 about a month ago, and have driven the car 3,000 miles already, with about 1/3 of that with a bike rack hanging off the back. Haven't dragged or scraped on anything.
I was wondering if I needed to buy a special saw for the bumper cutout and there you are with wirecutters doing a great job!
Really appreciate this video. I don’t think I will go the OEM hitch due to the complexities of installation, this video helped make my mind. If I had the adventure model I think I would, but with a standard hybrid model I can’t tow 4000 lbs anyways (1750) and will go for the slightly lower eco hitch.
thanks for the video, made my install a breeze.. I left mud guards attached to rear bumper, and removed it as a whole unit, there was no need to remove the taillights.
Is removing the bumper really necessary, the plastic bumper looks like it’s easy to pry away enough to install the sides n hitch.
Do you think the hitch can be installed pre assembled leaving the fasteners loose and tightened after final installation?

you remove the factory aluminum bumper on the inside, this replaces it, this part is heavy duty and a perfect fit, no issues.
@@CarlosRamirez-tc5dc You'll waste more time, possibly damage the bumper by pulling on it too hard, and will have a really difficult time getting the aluminum bumper off. Just remove it

This hitch should of been a factory installed option along w/ tow prep package. Installed a curt hitch & it bottoms out due to being too low.

Excellent video! The only remaining problem is getting some of the bolts connecting the side arms to the rail and I have a torque wrench adapter being delivered to me. Otherwise, everything went smoothly. I even got the hole in the bumper cut out perfectly! Thank you!!!
What tool you used to make the cut?
I used a Dremel with a cutting wheel. Measure carefully with the template, recheck and cut. Slowly.
Thank you. I was looking at a Curt hitch and they have it installed below the number. Too low. I like how the Oem is higher even though you have to cut the bumper. No bottoming out 🤞

that template was a bit confusing and annoying my instruction were printed two sided so they end up on the same piece of paper, i figured it out and made it work but pretty dumb it was printed that way

Amazon now longer carries the OEM hitch. Where's another place in stock that charges reasonable shipping? Also for the wiring harness? If I'm going to install this I might as well install the harness while it's all apart. Then it's good for brake and signal lights too to add to any hitch or even a bike rack, which is my application.

Having the rear bumper off can partially simplify the installation of the wiring. But you will still need to remove trim panels inside the RAV4. Be sure to check what size the nuts and bolts are before you begin install. Went into thinking I had everything but the bolts were 19 mm as opposed to the 17 mm they claim to be in the package.

About to embark on installing the OEM hitch on my 2021RAV4 Prime; great video. A couple questions: 1) do you have to really need to unplug battery terminals in engine or in the luggage compartment? 2) During the video as you pulling off the bumper, you talked about a green pin...what is that and do I need to be extra careful with it?
Curious if anyone else feels like cutting the bumper shroud affects its structural integrity which causes vibration or wind noise at higher speeds. I just had the dealer install the hitch on my 2020 TRD and now I have vibration and wind noise. I think they may have done something wrong.
this is really a concern for cutting such a large opening on the bumper...did you fix the noise?
@@benjiang6493 I have not. It is not bad when my bike rack is installed for some reason. It does make a bit of noise at higher speeds when the rack is not on.

They need to give a trim piece to go around to cover the cut
Also does the hands-free lift gate still work because that’s the issue I’m having if I want to install one
They do supply the edge protector with the hitch. We have not installed it yet.
As for hands-free lift gate, I don't think it will work with the hitch. Here is the description from the sellers website:
It is engineered to help accommodate your RAV4 maximum tow rating. Optimised placement provides precise drop/rise to maintain vehicle departure angle. Designed, engineered and built to meet Toyota’s exacting quality standards. Tow Hitch Receiver is not available with Height Adjustable, Foot Activated Power Liftgate option for the Limited models (4450, 4452, 4454).

Mine came with a pretty nice looking clamp trim piece to go around the cut edge

Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately you won't be able to remove the bumper beam (the metal piece inside the bumper) without removing the rear bumper. The hitch assembly goes in its place.

I disappointed Toyota didn't prewired RAV4 like they did for Highlander. It would be very useful to rent a small trailer from HomeDepot from time to time.

Does the bottom of the bumper valance bow down a bit because of the harness light connector bar? Looks like that piece pushes out the bumper slightly.
Did you initially use an exacto knife to start the bumper cuts? This is the part I'm most nervous about. I know I'm gonna make it look ugly. Also concerned about breaking the moulding clips.
Also, is there a good liner/edging to place around the bumper cut portion to make it look smoother?
Yes, we used the exacto knife. You can also use the hole saw. It may be easier this way.

Just installed my hitch. Thanks for this upload. For the wiring harness, if I have the Hybrid is it easier to install since the battery is located in the rear of the vehicle?
You'r welcome. Yes, for hybrid it would be totally different way to install wiring set.

@@DavidsOutdoors replying to old I know. Just installed mine today on a hybrid. It was with out the wiring kit since I'm not towing just using for a bike rack. It took my lazy ass 3 hours total. Being a hybrid it made it harder to install. The reason being facing the rear of the vehicle and looking at your right and side. The battery protrusion on that side (since hybrid standardish battery is in rear) makes it a pita to tighten that side down.
I'm going to be taking on this project soon. Did you find a sharp knife worked okay for cutting the bumper? I'm wondering if I should get a Dremel tool.
The knife works but you need to be very careful. There is a chance of cutting yourself. The Dremel should work as well.

Может подскажите, какого класса этот фаркоп? на сайтах вроде как указанно класс 2, но в этих же источниках указанно что у класса 2, терминал 1-1/4 дюйма а у этого он 2 дюйма что подразумевает что это третий класс.

Спасибо за комментарий. Оригинальный фаркоп звявлен как Класс 2, Tongue weight- до 150 lbs. , грузоподъёмность- до 3500 lbs.Грузоподъёмность также зависит от модели: Adventure /Trail- 3500 lbs. , остальные модели- 1500 lbs.

Вроде разобрался. Скорее что именно из за того что оригинальный фаркоп имеет 8 болтов и уши крепления из двух частей, он и квалифицирован как класс2, те которые не просто с двумя ушами, всеми фирмами заявлены как класс3.
Мне как раз класс 3 нужен чтоб перевозить мотоцикл на motorcycle carrier black widow.
Good video. I just had the OEM hitch and harness installed a few weeks ago by the dealer. Now I hear a clunking noise coming from the rear right side of the vehicle whenever I drive through rough roads or bumps. Have you had the same issue? Does anyone on this forum have the same issue?
Looks like the dealership could have done a better job on this one. When it is done the right way there are no noises. I would take the car back for them to fix it.
The receiver that came in the hitch box is confusing ? what side does the two inch ball go on ? You never showed that. Thank you
You are right, we did not show that.Towing hook should be installed inside square receiver. Ball position (high or low) depends on load application.

What can you do about the kick plate?
Did this install on my 2020 RAV4 Hybrid. Instructions are flawed. You don’t need to remove anything from the rear seat on. In terms of installing the wiring harness
We installed the wiring harness in the non-hybrid RAV4 which has the 12v battery under the hood. In this case you need to run the wire from the battery all the way back. In your case, the hybrid RAV4 has the 12v battery in the back. This simplifies the process. Instructions that we used are the official Toyota instructions for their techs.

In this case it was cut out using the sharp knife. You can also make a pilot hole and then use the hole saw set. This way of doing it is easier and less risky.
Is this a Trail version with 8.6" height? We bought a 2021 RAV4 Trail model and debating which hitch to get. Looks like the OEM model has it sitting higher than an aftermarket. We plan to tow a small camping trailer. Looks like the height from ground to inside top of the hitch is about 15.75 inches?
Hi Aruna, yes OEM hitch has highest ground clearance compare to all aftermarket brands, but for installation you have to remove rear bumper. Curt hitch is easy to install but has clearance about 2 inches lower. ruclips.net/video/Whx6ZDAy41A/видео.html
Is anyone else getting a ton of noise from the hatch area after installing the OEM hitch? It sounds like my bumper is making a rubbing/squeaking noise anytime I hit a bump or drive on rough roads. Not really sure how I could have installed it incorrectly though.

I ordered this today, and I was wondering if it's possible to install this without taking off the rear bumper? Can you just cut a hole on the bumper while it's on? All the holes where the tow hitch bolts onto the frame are accessible without removing the bumper, right? And the tow hitch isn't one piece. That's why you don't need to drop the exhaust a little to get the anchors in.

Is it possible just to remove the bumper cover? (black plastic cover)
Not sure if they can be separated without removing the whole thing first. Toyota suggests to do the bumper removal the way it was shown in the video.

It gets discarded. Hitch goes in its place.

Hi, our vehicle does not have the kick sensor. So it was not an issue. Toyota says that the kick sensor won't function properly after the hitch installation. On the other hand I believe some RAV4 owners managed to successfully install the hitch with the kick sensor still being operational.

If you need to install just the hitch itself, there is no need to buy the trailer wire harness.

Is it me or does the OEM hitch seem like way more work than the aftermarket ones? The aftermarket ones don't require having to take apart bumper, lights, etc.
