While the flax is growing and the steel is cooking, I might as well go out and find some old ruins that we haven't had time to explore. And this ruin is cram packed with locusts! SQUIRREL!

I don't know about the locusts, but you can actually burn npcs by attacking them with torches! It's not really effective, but kinda amusing to see a drifter alight in flames for five seconds after punching it with a torch like seven times.
Oh and no, you can't tame locusts as the hunter class. You can build the spear if you turned off class exclusive crafting, but the spear still requires you to be a clock maker to tame locusts.

Yeah, I've heard that! I thought I managed to tame a locust in my last VS playthrough... Maybe it was an update!

some of the better ruins.. just have spawners you can not see.. so the will endlessly drop mobs in. i think it was added log ago so all the fancy resources you find are not FREE for the taking.. you have to work for it.

One of the things I like about Vintage Story is there is no experience bar. No need to go and find the mobs unless you want their resources. No need to create mob farms. Multiplayer players don't need to argue about who stays home growing food or building things while someone else goes out getting the majority of the experience from killing mobs. Running from the mobs is just as acceptable as trying to fight them. No loss of experience from dying. Why would you LOSE experience from dying?! Don't you GAIN experience from dying? "Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

lol! Well, basically when you die, you're dead! Only in these virtual worlds are we granted the chance to be reborn countless times! Alas, the loss of experience is the least of my concerns. But what do you think about experience. Do you think that should be an added feature? Because I think there is some sort of mod for that!

@@Rakoona I've often thought good preparation before doing anything else creates a foundation upon which to build your dreams. True in life as it is in (survival) games. I prefer a skill mod over an experience mod. I think it rewards you for what you do as you do it. Just like in life, you do things every day and, hopefully, learn something new every day. When you die in the video game, I can understand losing experience as a penalty, but there has to be something else. I think people should lose points of health that they need to build back up to full health. It's a setback some might ignore, but often to their own peril. Just like when you get injured badly, you have to go into therapy and work towards full health, or you suffer consequences for going back to work or "getting back in the game" too early. I like how the natural healing in the game is relatively slow, but it still has the "game mechanic" of being able to heal yourself with poultices and bandages if you're in a tight spot where natural healing would be detrimental to getting back to safety. Dying in the game should be a "check yourself" moment. Where the player should stop and reevaluate what they're doing and how they're doing it. Having less and less health each time they die would force them to leave dangerous areas until they've recovered enough health to return. I don't think having a stamina meter would be very fun in a game like VS. Maybe as a mod, but not in vanilla. Since having to remember that your character needs to stop and rest or sleep wouldn't work well considering how fast the game speed is normally. Having to continually exit a cave system to stop and rest would deter anyone from exploring them beyond a cursory investigation. They would just pro-pick where ores should be and dig holes straight down to the ores. Sure, finding ruins in the caves would be nice, but having a time limit in caves or having to sleep in the caves while the horror mobs accumulated around you would be detrimental and possibly outweigh the benefits of exploring--especially for single players. I like the need to eat factor instead of a stamina meter. It requires the players to bring along food and curtails continual endeavors like cave exploration or mining to some degree, as they have to eventually exit the underground to get food.
