I remember playing House of the Dead 1 at the arcade with my dad and we spent like almost an hour just completing the whole thing, actually had a bit of a crowd of people watching and its a great memory I have of hanging out with him :)

The bosses really make this series, and I'd argue that even some of the worst manage to be somewhat memorable.

I do at least like that The Lovers is a reference to The Hermit, being a sorta remake of it. There's a lot of that going around the later games, with Judgement being a mix of Chariot and Hanged Man and Emperess being a mix of Strength and Emperor, for example. I think that's quite fun at least.
That said, High Preistess was SUCH a disappointment for me. Unlike Temperence which felt awesome as an "unkillable" boss, this one felt more like "we have a cool way to kill her, lets shove it in!" And then they ran out of time to finish the fight and make it, ya know, GOOD. A giant slime-squid-kraken should have been much cooler and with more varied attacks, but yeah...all she does is slowly move towards you. She sufferers from the same weakness that all of Overkill's bosses had, that being them only having one or two attacks. And considering how AWESOME SD's Chariot was...yeah, this felt bad.
If this was my list, however, Emperess would be number 1, purely for how cheap and impossible the head hitbox can be sometimes when she's attacking from outside the train. Bitch ate SO many lives that felt really cheap.
Also oof...my favorite boss is number 3...sadness. I personally love sun's design. Sure, his fight is absolute cancer and physically painful, but the design is SO cool to me.
Also, also, my headcanon is that The Emperor is basically one single giant cell, and can replicate its biomass sludge into other forms, hence how it can take on the shape of other bosses. It also MIGHT be a prototype of the Wheel of Fate, since they do look sorta similar. I do feel that the designers were going for "Eldritch Humanoid Horror" for the final bosses of the first 3 games, and while they hit the nail perfectly with Magician, yeah, I do agree that Emperor and Wheel's physical forms do look a bit like goofy early 3D models you might see on animation test footage. If Emperor had looked more...biological and squishy...and Wheel had looked more obviously mechanical, and neither looked like untextured Blender models, I would take em more seriously. I'm glad that with The World and Moon, they stopped trying to make The Magician again, and just made giant monsters.

I would argue for most bosses, the experiences are entirely different when you play the games on actual arcade boxes with lightshooters vs playing it emulated/crosshair. The crosshair play just TRIVIALIZES most of the older games' boss fights, namely 1, 2 and 3.
The Hermit imo is most egregious example, being relatively hard to target on actual light shooters and a literal joke on emulated play, just place the crosshair in the middle lol. Many like the Chariot and on a worse degree, The Fool suffer this issue as well.
Wheel of Fate though... I agree that that dude was a coin eater, and design-wise, the High Priestess was very disappointing for me.

  • @reploiddasher2000
    @reploiddasher2000 Год назад +6

Bro, i was narrowing the top spot down to ”The Fool”, which i would perfectly understand. And then i see my TOP PICK ”The Wheel of Fate” (with ”The Magician” as a very close second). Its not often i yell out NO!!! when watching a video, but you managed to do it. To me he’s been my personal Impossible Boss from childhood, so finally finishing him years later was quite a victory. I get your point by the difficulty regarding the Arcade Coin system. But as ive sadly never had the privilage to experience a game from the series in an Arcade, my experience is more of a Life Drainer with barely enough to counter an attack. Which i really like as i tend to only lose plenty of lives against ”The Fool” and ”The Wheel of Fate”. It makes him truly seem like a force to be reckoned with, aswell as having a simple yet cool and intimidating design, the awesome music adding to its intensity and having one of the coolest looking locations of any game as his arena. Might have alot to do with nostalgia but i cant get enough of loving ”The Wheel of Fate” in so many ways. Was a neat watch and id like to make it clear that i respect your opinions, heck i even welcome it as the series could use more differing opinions ^-^

While it's cool there are some 'upgrades' on some bosses like Hermit -> Lovers, but I hope they'll keep some slots of tarot for more various other boss type for each new Tarot name. No more reusing of past boss shape for other tarot. Let the upgrade be something like what happened to Chariot and Hangedman on Scarlet Dawn. Too late though, it's only Devil left.
For me Emperor is something like typical slime on RPG ish game thus make he can replicate the shape of other bosses, it's a cool idea but they just can't execute it well with their tech at the time. He looked stiff af instead of slime-ish. Gotta to give credit for the main idea though, hopefully the remake can execute Emperor's boss fight main idea better.

Alright, as someone who has some fondness of the game, I'm gonna give you the rundown, my thoughts on this. I'm even going to remember to count *down* and not up. SO!
{10} Yeah, I can see why this is a placeholder. The Tower isn't special, but also not bad.
{9} The Lovers fall under 'Interesting, but not interested' for me, so I can see this being here.
{8} Now, for the Priestess, I actually have something to say: She's an octopus. I'm not entirely sure how that was missed, when you DO guess that her cries are whale-like, but she's an octopus, and they don't move very fast on land. That's why this fight is the way that it is. Wait, is Temperance a she? Never heard that one before. I figured it was more a giant toadman.
{7} Chariot is much better in Scarlet Dawn, yeah. Them re-using a couple older bosses and making them better was a good decision on the part of the developers.
{6} Empress' design and weapon are not bad for me, and I think some of the fights in HOTD 4 were suppose to be somewhat mirroring the ones from the second game on purpose, like Goldman took a bicycle pump to the previous ones and...okay, Star isn't special. He's just a floating man with energy balls ripping off Dante's look.
{5} Hierophant completely belongs on this list. No arguments.
    {4} It's a spider. It shoots webs, so it's a spider. Hermit isn't a very GOOD spider, but it's a spider.
{3} I figured Sun would be here. Bit of a nothing boss. However, there might be others I think deserve to be here more than previous entries...
{2} Saw this one coming a mile away. The Emperor's such a derp, thanks to HOTD 2's 'acting'. And yeah, its powers are irritating to deal with. I'm completely with you here.
{1} I can see your reasoning here. That said...
Star belongs on this list for being a lame floaty-man with knives who rips off Dante from Devil May Cry in atttire, and both Justice and Temperance are only saved by their design because they have no character but Rawr.

While I actually enjoy the utter disorientating chaos of the Wheel of Fortune fight (and epic boss theme), you're completely right about it being a coin eater -- I can't even remember how many coins I used to defeat him in the arcade but I'm guessing he alone made me at least £5-10 poorer.

I agree with almost the entire video, but Wheel of Fate doesn't deserve to be the top 1, only for one reason, the atmosphere of the fight, is absolutely epic, with a musical theme that feels like a real final boss, a design that looks like The Emperor but well done and an incredible scenario to accompany the battle, in addition to being a coin slot has my doubts, the game was ported to many consoles since at that time arcades were already dying, So maybe they took that into account for the gameplay.

I saw a pattern in the last 3 entries and that’s bullet sponge bosses. Yeah I can see why they’re at the very top (or bottom, depending on perspective) of the list. Wheel of fate might be too long, but Emperor is the worst boss for me. I don’t like his initial attack patterns as the window to stop his attacks is fairly small if you’re not accurate enough and his 2nd phase reuses all bosses but Magician in a game that reused its bosses WAY too much. That means in a way (even if it’s a brief appearance attack) you have to fight the first 3 bosses, like 3 times in the game.

  • @atmastand3485
    @atmastand3485 10 месяцев назад +2

Not to be nitpicky or rude, but I'm going to be honest and vehemently disagree with your Number 1 pick. There's only really one phase that is unbalanced and that's the WoF Flying across the screen and striking the the player (Attack 1 or 2 I believe). The rest can be easily handled, and done in a single life. I've done this fight with a regular Xbox controller and that was probably the most difficult way I've cleared this fight. Now, with a light, with good calibration, and you're decimating the Wheel of Fate.
Personally, I'd have put a boss like Meat Katie, or The Fool as Number 1. Meat Katie... exists. She's not all that interesting and kinda lackluster. Like come on, you could have fought a twisted amalgamation of animal parts and mutants called "The Appetizer" or something like that in her place. And the Fool... That's a quarter eater if I've seen one. That boss is truly unbalanced, especially with that final attack. No matter the system or controller style, I've always lost alot of lives to that one boss.
As an aside, I'd just like to say that playing HoTD 3 on an original Xbox disc on the 360 leads to some really "Interesting" framerate changes that will be an absolute bane.

It's the easiest boss in entire franchise.
He just stands there and if you have some experience you beat him easily.
Yea i like his design and maybe they wanted him to not to be that strong for being the first boss. But i think they could've made him little harder. And he would've been an amazing boss. But still i like him.

I agree with for most of the boss fights and I wanna give my opinion as well on them
Since I've only played 1 through 3 I'll talk about the bosses of those.
From the time I've played hotd 1 Hermit is the boss that takes most of my life points.
I don't really hate Hierophant in hotd 2 but I dislike the boss only for the fact as someone who plays boss mode frequently when I used to play he was a pain to fight, for context the fastest time I got on Hierophant more specifically Hierophant (B) was about 25 seconds. The strategy I used to get this time is when he sends the fish to attack you immediately shoot his weak point as fast as you can, not only that but you also have to make sure he never leaps during his final phase; so with all this in mind if you mess up any of these you end up with a huge time loss.
Now on to hotd 3 Sun is kinda annoying to fight the last phase since you have little time to shoot the heads. The wheel of fate is also terrible to fight and sometimes I end up losing a credit to. He's not to hard to learn his movements and strategize how to attack him but it's still a tedious fight. I remember the first time fighting him when I was younger I got surprised and upset that his health regenerated which was pretty funny looking back at it but yeah he's not to great to fight.
So yeah there's all my ramblings and idk if anyone would read through this but it's cool that you did.

23:00 HOTD 3’s reloading takes longer on the Wii and the empty PS3 reload…but the arcade and partial reload on the PS3 are way quicker. This makes him easier to deal with (not a lot easier, he’s still got quite the health bar). This is also how I was able to get higher scores and a time attack WR on PS3 much easier. This is also why I don’t like the Wii version of 3.

I hate Hierophant but for a different reason. The Dreamcast light gun is very inaccurate and bad so when he does his attack where he jumps up, it's impossible to shoot at the edges of the screen reliably. And so he gets a cheap shot almost every single time

It rewards skill and knowledge they all do I guess but I watched an in detail explanation of another shooter dark escape and that game is completely unfair and impossible at times. This game will eat coins but these other ones I wouldn’t even bother with because I know I’m not winning in a couple tries. Other examples that terminator one the aliens one etc.
